5 comments about Birnbaum's Disneyland (Birnbaum Travel Guides).
- If you've never been to Disneyland, this book is definitely
on the "must buy" list.
HOWEVER, because this book is the "official" blessed guide to
Disneyland, it tends to be uncritical, and doesn't
contain nearly as many useful insider tips as Selinger's
"Unofficial Guide to Disneyland." For a well-rounded
view, get both.
- Disneyland is such a large place that i'd get lost without this book. It tells you everything from tips, to prices. This is surely like the Bible for the year 2000 in disneyland
- The tips in this book saved me over $200 on a Disneyland package by calling the hotel and NOT using a travel agent. This is a great well organized planner.
- The tips in the book were helpful, but I did expect more coupons. There were only 4 coupons, and I didn't need any of them. Would appreciate coupons from food places and a discount on daily entrance or 3-day entrance.
- I've been buying Birnbaum's Official Guide to Disneyland since 1995. Every year it gets better and better, and I look forward to a new yearly copy. We go to Disneyland 3-4 times a year so I'm pretty familiar with what attractions to avoid at what times, or where to escape the rain, and when NOT to do your shopping. Every year they make some changes and give you some new tips, or add new attractions or restaruants. Even if it is "official" it's a great guide book and worth reading. There aren't too many bad things to say about Disneyland, so there isn't really a point to buying an "unofficial" guide. I've never been disappointed with any of Birnbaum's Official Guides to Disneyland. They are extremely helpful in planning your day or week at Disneyland

- I thought this book is great for a prospective traveller to San Diego. It has beautiful pictures, great details on area attractions, and suggestions on where to stay in San Diego! It's a must read for those who are planning a first time trip to San Diego!
- ACCESS guides are excellent for the traveller who wants to know exactly what they are getting into. The guide practically walks you down the street and lets you look into each store, restaurant, lodging, or sight. The guide is color-coded to identify restaurants, shops, hotels, sights. Additionally, probably as space fillers, there are numerous tidbits or facts or famous authors' bests of the city. Probably a weakness of ACCESS is its maps. An excellent starting point for researching your next vacation.
- While Access guides are usually wonderful sources of information for travelers, I was sorely disappointed with this guide when I bought it (and with myself) because I hadn't noted that it hadn't been updated since 1996. 1996! So much of the information in the book is out of date! Not only must you ignore all restaurant information, even museums have moved locations in the intervening six years. Richard Saul Wurman, please update Access San Diego or stop printing it!

1 comments about Translating LA: A Tour of the Rainbow City.
- Let's face it, Los Angeles gets more negative press than any other city in America. Much of this is because it's such an easy target-from police brutality, to earthquakes, to disgustingly ostentatious wealth, to smog, to gang violence, to sprawl, to racial tension, to the film industry-so much of how outsiders define LA is easy to use as fodder for contempt. And when you have a city that covers over 1,000 square miles and includes about 85 incorporated cities, one is left with a megalopolis that's hard to get one's mind around, much less defend.
That said, Boston-raised writer and translator Theroux does his best to find the good in LA. After ten years living in the Middle East, he moved to Long Beach in 1985 and set himself up as a translator. In twelve breezy chapters that mix the history of LA's different areas with his own excursions and recent history, Theroux makes the case for LA as a multicultural melting pot that remains as the overwhelming symbol for the American good life in the Third World. It's far from a comprehensive history or in-depth analysis (Mike Davis' City of Quartz will serve one better), but it does do a nice job of taking the reader through some of the neighborhoods with the aim of trying to explain how they are different and why. There are no big lessons to be learned, but Theroux's crisp prose and storytelling are a treat, and his open-minded approach to the city make for a nice change.

2 comments about The Thomas Guide 2001 Los Angeles and Orange County : Street Guide and Directory (Bk&Cd Rom ed).
- The Thomas Guide is the definitive map for anyone who needs to find addresses quickly and easily in the Los Angeles area. It lists every street imaginible, even tiny ones like the one near where I live that doesn't even have a street sign, yet Thomas Guide knows its name.
Streets are indexed by street name, making them easy to find in the grid-like maps on each page. There is even a handy zip code listing. Great for sales people and the like who need to find their way through unfamiliar territory quickly and easily. I'd be lost without my Thomas Guide.
- It is true that the Thomas Guide is the most conclusive map book around! I recently purchased the 2001 LA/Orange Thomas Guide, as well as many others, at the Thomas Brothers store in San Francisco on Jackson and Columbus. They had every Thomas Guide known to man, and wall maps to accompany them!
