1. This book is basically a bunch of pictures of LA's official historic landmarks. At the intro to each neighborhood, there is a brief write-up (1/2-3/4 page) on ALL off the landmarks in that area. A sentence or two on a FEW of the sites just doesn't cut it. To top it off, the print/paper quality is not very good. I'm sorry to say, it's simply disappointing.



2. Given to me as a gift when I first joined the L.A. Conservancy in 2002, "Landmark L.A." has proven to be a great resource for discovering and appreciating the architectural icons that make Los Angeles unique. With more and more properties being designated every year, I am hopeful an updated edition will be published soon.

1. I grew up in Chicago but haven't been back for 20 years. So, when I was assigned to Chicago to open a new business, I bought a few guides, this was one of them. While not intended to be an absolutely complete guidebook (ala the Fodors gold series) it does a good job of listing the top restaurants (by cuisine), top hotels (by price) top entertainment spots (by type) and top 25 sights to see. I especially liked the brevity of this feature because it helped me focus on the most important museums , entertainment and other features of the city. Every listing has a location, nearest mass transit stop, and map coordinates that match the city map that is included with the package. If you're looking for a simple but very useful guide, this is the one.

1. Good update to a "must have" map for travel in the Los Angeles and Ventura Counties of California. The guide also includes points of interest and essential facilities (Post offices, Governmental Centers, Hospitals, etc.) in an indexed listing and on the map pages.
