- I really enjoyed this book. His pictures look like the structures are actually situated just as shown. In the back of the book, he shows what the structures looked like prior to editing, and discusses his techniques. Very interesting!

- This map has pocketable size going for it, but that's about it.
There are 2 sides to it: One has the greater LA area, but isn't really detailed enough to be useful for navigating anywhere other than city to city (only major highways are marked). The other side has a detail of downtown - but who roams around downtown LA?
I think the "Popout" one is better, and equally pocketable.

1 comments about Greenopia: The Urban Dweller's Guide to Green Living Los Angeles (Greenopia series).
- I have been wishing for a book like this to come along. It is extremely helpful in allowing me to live the way I want to live (ethically and organic) without having to call each business and ask. They have a handy rating system, too, that tells you just how "organic" each business is. That way you can decide if you want just 50% organic or 100%. I've already used it twice and found a great restaurant near my house.

- First of all - for this price - you cannot go wrong. It is a big beautiful hard covered book. Anyone would like it as a gift.
I, myself, was given this book as a gift and am simply amazed by the work. Haas' photographs are sometimes sad, sometimes funny and always intelligent and interesting. He captures trees all over the city in color and in black and white - trees that seem miraculous given the fact that the city is so unwelcoming. As you look at a picture of a fiery red tree exploding from the sidewalk in front of a convenience store, with cars speeding by graffiti competing for attention, you cannot help but be startled and overwhelmed. We keep the book in our living room and everyone who looks at it adores it. The essays are really really good also, and it is nice to have intelligent commentary about the art. But the pictures speak eloquently for themselves.

4 comments about Hollywood Views of the Past and Present.
- I love this book. It is the most comprehensive
collection I have seen of vintage Hollywood photographs juxtaposed against their present-day counterparts. There is another inferior book out there called "Hollywood Then & Now," which is not nearly as good. Some of the shots were out of focus, the historical anecdotes were incorrect and there was no attention paid to shooting the new shots from the same vantage points. In this work, the photographer obviously took great pains to capture the current vistas from precisely the same vantage point as their vintage partners. The captions weave a colorful tapestry of the city's history while the photos provide all the visual splendor that comes with the famed Hollywood cityscape. This book also features a Forward by Johnny Grant the Mayor of Hollywood, who has included this work in a time capsule to be opened in 37 years, on the 150th birthday of Hollywood. This is a must have!
- Another piece of drivel from the crayons of George Ross Jezek. Don't let the lovely cover fool you, the interior contains nothing of value. Jezek's photos are incredibly poor and badly shot. Of course there's also the unappetizing prerequisite of factual errors which are far too common throughout Jezek's work. I'm surprised this stinkster even remembered to remove the cap when taking the pictures. This book was made for gullible tourists. If Amazon would allow to me to leave "0" stars for this book, it would still deserve a negative. If you're in the market for a suburb book on Hollywood, I suggest go out and buy Rosemary Lord's book. Jezek's book doesn't even have a discount, he's a greedy fella he is.
- THIS BOOK IS THE ONLY BOOK(HOLLYWOOD NOW & THEN)
THAT TELLS THE TRUE STORY OF HOLLYWOOD IN PHOTOGRAPHS, WITH MR. JOHNNY GRANT WRITING THE INTRO YOU CAN'T LOSE IT IS JUST A WONDERFUL BOOK!
- I was raised in Hollywood in the 1950s. I was given Rosemary Lords book and found it to be inaccurate and poorly photographed.
I then found this book and I was thrilled. This book contains superb photographs, great nostalgia, and certainly captures the feeling of Old Hollywood as I remember it. I liked the writing style of the author and also think it's up-beat as opposed to lamenting in tone. The look and graphics in the book are also well designed.

3 comments about Los Angeles: Deluxe.
- Weighing in at nine pounds and a huge lap full at 18" X 15" X 2" LOS ANGELES, the book, is as spectacular and huge as the city it emulates! This is a splendid spectrum of photographic views of all that is Los Angeles.
Diane Keaton provides the spunky introduction to this lavish volume and few could have better summarized what makes Los Angeles unique. What then follows are Tim Street-Porter's photographic explorations of the idiosyncratic homes that span the gamut of style and period, the boulevards with the trademark palm trees, the landscapes that touch this city at the mountains, the desert, and the ocean perimeters, and the architectural wonders that continue to sprout and blossom here. Space is generously given to Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall, to the Mineo Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, to the early Hollywood art deco theaters, and to the various neighborhoods that make Los Angeles a city of cultural miscegenation.
As is standard for Rizzoli Books the paper and color reproductions are of the highest quality. There are many fold out pages which, in a book this size, result in panoramas beneath the sun and the stars that spread for sixty inches! There are no holds barred at making this hefty tome a true homage to the City of the Angels and will surely build the city's reputation as a place of beauty wherever it is sold. A high end but gorgeous gift! Grady Harp, October 05
- I can't tell you how much I love Los Angeles and yet I live in Australia, so I obviously bought this up as soon as I saw it released. It is like one gigantic souvenier for me to look back at each time I get 'home sick'. The book is absolutely beautiful and the work involved in it is spectacular. The buildings and streets seem to come alive in here and it's a book for anyone who loves LA or wants to see it but hasn't been yet, or for someone into beautiful buildings etc. It's a costly purchase, but something you'll have for a lifetime. I really highly recommend this book as a luxury treat for yourself or someone you love.
- This books takes what many feel is an ugly, spawling city and shows it the way I have always seen it. Gorgous, bright, colorful and diverse. A hot bed of new and unusal design. This is a new city in regards to the East, but it has a very rich Architectual history. It is a city alive and thriving.
I do wish more attention had been payed to the eastside and more of south central or south L.A. as it is now called. Then again who could have lifted such a heavy book had Tim Street-Porter done that.

5 comments about L.A. First Class.
- First there was the Thomas Guide, then the book on shortcuts and now finally LOS ANGELES FIRST CLASS. I have been working in the entertainment indusrty for ten years and this is the answers to hundreds of questions that I needed to answer and FAST. From jets to pets, every chapter of this book is filled with useful information and the companies included are people who are going to get things right the first time. My only fear is that my boss gets her hands on it, it's user-friendly layout makes it too easy.
- Although I can only afford to use this resource occasionally,
I have many friends who are already turning to this conscise, well written reference book on a frequent basis. Bravo Ms. Elias!
- This book is a fabulous, time-saving resource for all Angelinos. Worth the read for usefulness and great entertainment! Highly recommend.
- I've worked as a personal assistant for over 15 years and this book contains exactly the information that has taken me 15 years to compile AND MORE! Anyone who works for people who expect the best should buy this book and impress their boss by having all the best resources! This will save any assistant years of research and the added benefit of the peace of mind in knowing that everyone listed in this book are competent of delivering on their promise.
- This is a wonderful compilation of shops and services that celebrities have patronized. Ms. Elias has done a wonderful job putting together her career experience with Hollywood stars by divulging their little secrets on where they shop for toys, where they dine, where and who does their hair and other goods and services that they take advantage of.
You'd be surprised at some of the places they go. You may just run into these stars buying Barbies or getting a bikini wax next to you. Can you imagine a hairstylist using the same pair of scissors that were used on Bette Midler to cut your own hair? Or Bette Midler's mermaid tail brushing up against your dinner jacket at the dry cleaners? Even if you don't use the book for needed services, it's a fun peek into the lives of your favorite celebrities. Buy this book!

4 comments about Favorite Dog Hikes in And Around Las Vegas (Favorite Dog Hikes).
- It has a bunch of new trails we never knew about. There are photos of every hike, excellent directions and maps. The photos were the selling point. They give a good idea of what to expect. We took our dogs out to Goodsprings and they just had the best time. It was a beautiful hike. There wasn't a soul out there. No leashes, either. We all had so much fun.
- An easy read, with the best coverage of dog friendly trails and parks around Las Vegas, loaded with basic hiking information for dogs and humans that's good anywhere. The sections on, on leash, and off leash local parks are a nice bonus.
- This is filled with great information for anyone (dog owner or not) I especially like the climate/temperature information, as Las Vegas weather extremes can be hard on dogs. Excellent descriptions of all areas. Interestingly written and accurate.
This is the best dog hike book available!
- Benti and Lawlor's Favorite Dog Hikes: Las Vegas is a great book for people looking for an active way to spend time with their dog outdoors. There are many maps and great directions for getting to the different areas and two great maps of off-leash dog parks in the area. Several photographs help tell you more about the hikes the authors talk about.
