  1. I've been to Las Vegas many times for business and pleasure. I did not find this book very helpful. While the concept for a 1 to 777 ranking of restaurant values is a good idea, this book has no information about the restaurants or their food. With ranking by price in various categories, you could use it as a cross-reference to the Unofficial Guide or Frommers. But who has the time? Just use one of those 2 books first -- both are good. This book would be useful to a Las Vegas resident, but is of limited value for a visitor. Prices have really gone up this year, so the information is out-of-date by as much as 50 percent.

  2. I found this book helpful in finding bargains thruoghout the Las Vegas area.Though there were a few entries that were no longer in business or discontinued, for the most part it was very helpful.

  3. The book is excellant. I never knew there were so many places to eat cheap in Las Vegas. It's is really hard to believe. We are taking this book with us and plan on using many of the reccomendations in the book.

  4. With all of the changes that happen Las Vegas EVERY DAY I found that this book was of little help. Several of the places that were listed did not even exsit anymore, and most of the others had changed their specials. If you decide to get this book I recomend doing your own "back-up" homework and call the places to check and see if the specials are still in effect.

  5. I will be heading to Las Vegas in a few weeks and found this book very helpful, not only for the great restaurant's but their locations as well. This book will enable myself and my family to enjoy our vacation, and find some wonderful places to dine at reasonable prices as well.

  1. If you buy one book about the colorful history and architecture of the Golden Age of Las Vegas to the present, THIS IS IT!!! This wonderful book is expertly researched with many many old drawings, postcards, photos, and more!

  2. I've read other Alan Hess books- Googie come to mind. I really enjoyed Hess's style for this book. Alan Hess writes an occasional column for the San Jose Mercury News concerning architecture. He did not leave me disappointed with this book. It was evident that Alan Hess enjoyed this place as much as I did on my last visit to Sin City!

This book came out in 1993. If you're looking for information on the newer hotels that have sprung up, the ones that came and left during then and now, you won't find it here. You will find details about the ones that were imploded during the 90's, which was a nice resource for those of us that were curious about the Sands, Dunes, Hacienda and the Aladdin. It's also an indication of just how much the strip has evolved from the timeline of the publishing of this book and what is the strip looks today, year 2001. An excellent study of the architecture changes of Vegas and its reflections on the rest of the U.S.

  1. Contained everything I needed to know for a one-week jaunt in Sin City. Where to stay, where to eat, where to gamble and what shows to see. Lonely Planet never disappoints!

  2. i'm so sorry, but all the lonely planet books are the best,
i bought many of them, and my last was this from las vegas,
as usual, it was easy, cool and update.

  1. I thought I knew Vegas until I started thumbing through this book. It has all a beginner needs and if you are a vetran like me you will love this book. The gambling chapter is excellent. I made a lot more out of my trip with this well written book. I highly recommend it.

  2. I purchased this book to help me plan out my upcoming trip to Las Vegas. I have only been there once and it was about 10 years ago. It is obvious that a lot of research went into this book and I was extremely pleased at the way it is written (think cliff notes, not novel). At the beginning it gives short itineraries for various Vegas target groups (ie, beginners, families, high rollers). It rates nearly all the hotels/casinos, numerous restaurants, and many of the shows. As well as providing pricing information for all the aforementioned activites. The book offers great gambling advice for the novice including rules and tips on such games as craps, blackjack, roulette, slots, and even sports wagering. It covers the strip, downtown, and other attractions in the area such as the Hoover Dam. The book really offers a comprehensive review of everything Las Vegas. It also includes great tips and strategies for saving and winning money. I strongly encourage would-be travelers to pick up this easy to follow guide before touching down in sin city. Fodor's beat the house odds with this gem.

  3. The best guide ever. It covers everything you want to know about Vegas: the casinos, restaurants, hotels, shows, shopping, clubs, even helpful links to websites and pull out map and much, much more! It also briefly describes the side trips from Las Vegas such a Hoover Dam, Lake Mead or even the Grand Canyon. And oh, if you are new to gambling gives you some lessons, tricks and tips for enjoying the casinos.

  1. I love, love, love this book! It is easy to read and all the hikes I've done (with my two dogs in tow) have been great. I would recommend this book to anyone (even if you don't hike with dogs). It is so hard to find a quality hiking book for this area. This is the BEST!

  2. Thanks to "Best hikes with dogs Las Vegas and Beyond," I am much more adventurous and take my dog to new trails often. Directions to trails and details of terrain have helped me choose which hikes are best suited for my dog and I. The book takes "guessing" out of the equation. A must have for anyone hiking with or without a dog.

  3. Chewbacca (25 lb pup) and I really enjoyed using the book on the trails! It was nice to know what hiking-obstacles we could expect. The first-aid section for dogs was really great too. If you've got a dog you blaze the trail with... then check this guide out.

  4. This book is great, it's so hard to find out about trails in the Las Vegas area (outside of the heavily populated areas). As a bonus, the authors are local and lead hikes every now and then around the valley. The web-site address for the guided hikes is printed in the back of the book.

  5. Good selection of places in and near Las Vegas to go hiking with your dog and rates them for how difficult they are (great for me since I'm a fairly new hiker). Also has sections on what to include in the first aid kit for your dog and hiking tips (preparing for your hike, etc.), and tons of maps. It divides the hikes into different areas around Las Vegas and within each area goes into detail about each hike. I definitely recommend this book!

  1. This book provides instructions for many hikes around Las Vegas not described in other guides. I have hiked many of these trails and always find the guide's desciptions inadequate. In fact, while hiking Bridge Mountain, following the Guide's instructions lead my experienced partner and I into a very dangerous situation. I still use the guide, but know that I will have to use my trail finding experience to augment the book's trail descriptions.

  2. I tried to use this book. However, the route descriptions are poor, and the author seems to have trouble telling north from south. There are too many errors to be typos. The area has some great hiking, and the book points out some good ideas, but be sure to take your topo map and compass! I thought about selling the book on half.com, but I would feel too guilty selling it to someone with less outdoor experience than I have.

  3. Being a local of Las Vegas I have been to Red Rock Canyon several times. There are limited hiking trails. The author covers the trails, but does much more. There are many scrambles to peaks that without this book would be virtually impossible to get to. Unfortunately, the rangers at Red Rock want to ban this book. I guess they would rather be gambling than doing their jobs. Many rangers don't even know where named peaks are in Red Rock. My advice is to buy this book or visit the author's Web site (same name as the book) and forget stopping at the visitor's center for information.

  4. I have hiked a lot in the Vegas area, and the first thing I noticed is that this book is not for first-timers! It is more useful for locating general spots to hike. It is very tough to follow the text and tiny B&W pictures to stay precisely on the trails. See if your library has a copy, or buy one used. It is worth a look and can be helpful.

  5. This is the best -most detailed book about hiking around Las Vegas-both in Red Rock and the Mt Charleston area.
He also has a great website- hikinglasvegas.com
He really knows his stuff and has detailed descriptions as well as photos. If you're just starting or serious about hiking this has everything you need!

  1. If you want the skinny on Las Vegas this is a great book to read. With a city as spectacular as "Sin City," you want an authoritative book that spells it all out. This book does just that. Definitely worth reading before you go to the glamor capital of the world.

Frank Scoblete: author of Golden Touch Dice Control Revolution! and Golden Touch Blackjack Revolution!

  2. Great source of information for my Vegas trip. I love all of the unofficial Guides. Great for finding in city discounts and information.

  3. I really like these "Unofficial" guides. Las Vegas changes so much that you almost have to buy a book yearly but I waited for 4 years to buy this one and it's just right! I can't tell you how accurate the information is until I take my trip but it sure has helped in the planning stages.

  4. My wife and I spent a week in Las Vegas recently. We've been going there every few years. The information and maps provided come in very handy. The hotel reviews are on the button. We stayed at the New York New York, and the review was about right. Last year, we stayed at the Monte Carlo, and again, the review was on the button. We had some excellent steaks at Mon Ami Gabi, not far from our hotel. If you plan on staying in Las Vegas for longer than a week, you will want this book.

  5. We have used the other "Unofficial" Guide books and this one had good info that we used while in Vegas. Excellent reviews for shows and food. We were not disappointed. Would like to see Timeshare Accomodations included in the lodging. Our timeshare experience was excellent. A great option instead of the standard hotel. Another excellent "Unofficial" guide.
