1. This is a wonderfully written account of Bror Blixen's experiences as big-game hunter and safari leader in East Africa during the 1920s and '30s. Blixen was a larger-than-life settler and safari leader who many believe was Ernest Hemingway's model for the masculine heroes in his books. In letters to friends, Blixen gives us his perceptions of the breathtaking beauty of Africa at that time, and a glimpse into that world before overhunting and progress changed forever the fate of the wild animals.

1. The coverage of Tanzania in this book is quite sparse. I did not find it to be useful at all, and a great disappointment. I then went out and bought Lonely Planet's book on Tanzania, and was very pleased with the depth of information it offered, including such things as maps of towns with locations of ATM's, hotels, etc and color photographs. This is a much more useful book if you are going to Tanzania.



2. Whatever you do- DONT buy this worthless book. Unless you just want to stay in 5 star lodges and do and see NOTHING ELSE. I had the Lonely Planet Kenya that I dragged with me backpacking in Kenya- It was wonderful. The East Africa Lonely Planet is great too. Save your money!



3. Three-fourths of this book is dedicated to Kenya. The addition of Tanzania was clearly an afterthought. The descriptions of lodgings are rather generic and there are only a few hotels, attractions, or restaurants listed. On Zanzibar, we did better with a 20 page pamphlet of ads than with this book. Don't waste your money on this book if you're headed to Tanzania or Zanzibar.

1. A gripping page turner, this is the fascinating story of a more than average life led in Ireland and Africa, in a world that no longer exists in the middle of the 20th century. Told through the eyes of the writer, this is all the more powerful because the story in it is true. Beginning with childhood living in the house of the lord of the manor in Ireland, the story shows how a life of supposed priviledge is not always an easy one. As we follow our heroine to Africa, we see how her love affair with the continent begins. A life less ordinary indeed, this gives a fascinating insight into the real world of white Africans, the complexities of living in countries full of turmoil.
   
   Apart from anything else the book is well written and interesting, not a usual autobiography, more like travel writing, an insight into a continent and culture.
