  1. When I read about this book and the author, I thought I would be reading another book telling about Sicily. Instead, I find that the author discusses the Mafia. He says nothing about the history of Sicily, places in Sicily or anything of interest. The entire book is about the Mafia. One time I thought he was going to talk about Sicilian customs and the people only to have him discuss the Mafia. Worst of all, the discussion had nothing to do with the custom he had started off with. He has nothing good to say about any of the towns and cities and, most of all, absolutely nothing good say about Sicily. I have read other people's comments on other books of his and I can't understand why they enjoy him so much. Most of his other books appear to be about the same subject, including his fiction works. Perhaps the title of this book should have been "In the Mafia."

  2. I bought this book as a gift for an american friend whose relatives are from Alcamo,Sicily and I did not read it. But I trusted the author, since I read "Naples 44" that I SIMPLY LOVED.

2 comments about The Rough Guide to Tuscany & Umbria 5 (Rough Guide Travel Guides).
  1. I can safely say that this is one of the best guidebooks I have ever carried with me. It's complete, accurate and well-written. I was amazed by the amount of research that must have gone in to making this book: there is a lot of interesting history (including excellent boxes with 'small history' and interesting stuff on all the peculiarities of the towns you might pass by), a lot of information (maps, accomodation, general atmosphere) on even the smallest towns, great descriptions of regions and highlights. I was never disappointed with the recommended things, ranging from restaurants to sites and museums. There is not only info about art, but also about food, trendy cafe's, quiet and less touristy villages etc. It really seemed to me that the people who made this book, known the area very well and spend a lot of time making a perfect guidebook that suits everybody. It's also the most recently published guidebook on the region, which means even the prices are correct. Highly recommended!

  2. This book was our savior while in Tuscanny & Umbria! After an exhausting day of exploring we'd come back to our Tuscan farm house, take a hot bath, drink wine, play Scrabble & then look through this great book, deciding how we'd spend our next day. We would map out our day & plug the addresses of the places we wanted to visit into our GPS. The next morning we were out the door until dark! We had a blast "planning as we went" & using this book to do it. We spent 14 wonderful days in Italy, 7 of them in Tuscanny/Umbria. This book allowed us to make the most of every day!

1 comments about Gericault in Italy.
  1. A painter of outstanding originality who was considered one of the founders of the French Romantic School, Theodore Gericault left Paris in late 1816, at the age of twenty-five, and spent the next year in Italy, making an extraordinary series of works in a variety of media.

This beautiful book studies the work produced by Gericault during this year and assesses the importance of the trip for the rest of his career. The book discusses and reproduces almost every painting and drawing done by Gericault during this period: his copies after the antique and earlier masters; his works on themes of contemporary Italian genre (an interest that made him almost unique among French artists of the period); the works on mythological and erotic themes; and his paramount Italian project - the series of works on the annual race of riderless horses down the Roman Corso, which have been organized here for the first time to illustrate fully the project's gradual development from the depiction of a scene Gericault actually observed into a timeless if essentially classical image of heroic struggle. The book sheds light not only on a hitherto unexamined period of Gericault's life but also on the efforts of a key figure in a transitional period of French art to come to grips with the classical and neoclassical past while embracing the new century's passions for the exotic and the real.

    From Library Journal:

The 25-year-old French painter Theodore Gericault was already a gold medal winner at the 1812 Paris Salon and would soon acquire fame for his 1819 "Raft of the Medusa" when he traveled to Italy in 1816 to experience ancient and Renaissance art. The drawings and paintings from that year-long sojourn are significant because they represent a pivotal point in a major artist's tragically short lifehe died at age 32 of a tubercular spinal infection. This scholarly book analyzes individual examples of Gericault's developing Romantic style by examining thematic and technical influences from the classical and neoclassical past, his contemporary world, and sculpture as well as painting. Art historian Whitney began researching Gericault for a doctoral thesis at the Courtauld Institute. Since he focuses on just one year in Gericault's life, nonspecialists desiring a broader perspective should also have access to Lorenz Eitner's Gericault: His Life and Work (Orbis, 1983). Recommended for academic libraries.Anne Marie Lane, American Heritage Ctr., Laramie, Wy.

1 comments about Venice 360 (360 Degrees).
  1. After visiting Italy for the first time, and falling in love with Venice, I wanted to find a coffee table book that captured my memories of such a magical city. I looked at several books, but this is the only one that gave me pictures of the scenes I remember -- the secret alleyways of the city that lead to gorgeous pockets of beauty, like a hidden courtyard, or flowers spilling off a trellis, viewed from a bridge. Not too text-heavy, this is a must-own for any Venice-phile.

  1. Great photos and book design, laid out to give the important information without overload, easy enough to carry with you in the street. Good breakdown of the areas within the city and the major sights. Would be an excellent book to look at if you are thinking of going to Rome to get a feel for the city. The maps are very good, the walking itineraries are very good; shopping, eating and entertainment is reviewed at the back of each city section. Only weak point is that only 14 hotels are reviewed, but those 14 are enough of a variety to get you a nice place. Well worth buying if you are heading over there.

  2. This is the only guide you you need to Rome. It is complete, well organized, easy to use and unbiased. The guide contains enough information yet is still light enough to carry around.
