3 comments about Fodor's See It Rome, 1st Edition (Fodor's See It).
  1. I agree with the reviewer who said that this is great for pre-trip research. It has a lot of useful pics for those who are not familiar with Rome's street sights, buses, etc. It gives detailed info on what to expect, which makes it useful when you are planning your days in Rome. I brought it to Rome and reviewed it every night before planning the next day. On the streets I preferred a detailed map instead of a book.

  2. Between this book and Rick Steve's Rome I was able to find my way around Rome. I found this book to be easy to find items quickly. Whereas, Rick Steve's Rome was good for pre trip information, this book was usually a good on the spot book with good maps.

  3. The See It series is finally allowing Fodor's to compete with the Eyewitness Travel Guides from DK Publishing which are always full of photos plus 3-D maps and diagrams. It was extremely helpful during the online research and planning of an upcoming trip. Previously I would typically not buy a book from Fodor's since I prefer to both see and read about a destination that I would like to learn more about and plan to visit.

The Rome book is well done with lots of useful photos, clear descriptions, maps, ratings, and even walking tours. They have done an excellent job and I recommend it as an alternative to DK Eyewitness and to supplement the Rick Steves' advice focused book. I wish this book wasn't so bulky as the pages are thick and the book is taller than the average title. Overall a good choice for a travel book about Rome for the first or second time visitor.

  1. I am a big fan of Earl Steinbicker's books, and his Daytrips Italy book not only has information on how to do 40 daytrips within Italy (transportation, what to see when you get there, where to have lunch, even small city-center maps) but it includes walking itineraries for Rome itself. You could photocopy just the pages you want to take with you. Highly recommended for daytrip planning and executing.

  2. I've used the Daytrip book while living in Italy for a number of years and it was very easy to follow. The walking maps were really great. Everything is much closer than it looks on the map. I'd recommend them to anyone taking a trip to Europe. I have the one's from England and France also. All very good.

  1. Beautiful coffee table style book with great pictures and descriptions of small, intimate hotels throughout Provence. A great companion to the Relais & Chateau guide.

  1. This book is the next best thing to being there--beautiful writing about a beautiful place. Anyone who loves good food, good wine, and good writing will not be disappointed by Travelers' Tales Tuscany. It's a wonderful collection of experiences and insights into the region--and a lot cheaper than the plane ticket! If you can't go to Tuscany this summer, at least buy yourself this book.

  2. I'd pick a story each night relating to what I was doing during my stay in Tuscany and found it the perfect way to fall into a wishful sleep. I read about buying a villa, shopping in the open market, and walking from village to village. I've never used a travel book like this to compliment my trip but found it extremely enjoyable since I was staying at the same villa for a few weeks. If you are thinking about going to Tuscany, this story book can certainly help you get there. The stories are well written as well as being interesting and fun.

  3. Well, at least most of the book is boring. The idea is nice, but how much fun can you derive from reading about piazzas, pizzas, macaronis and great views. Pasta is to eat, wine to drink and people - to meet. Reading about them is so much less fun. So if you want to read about Tuscany before going there - take a travel guide or history book. This one - if you can't fall asleep.

3 comments about An Architect's Rome (Bulfinch Architecture/Travel Series).
  1. I visited Rome three years ago, and saw most of what McGuire describes and illustrates with excellent pen and ink sketches and water colors. If I had the book then, I could have saved time, seen more, and I think, appreciated what I did see and visit to a greater extent. I am an architect. Perhaps this is why I so enjoyed McGuire's book. Most people who visit Rome do so because of its remarkable architecture. This volume will enhance their visit.

  2. I am sorry to see that this book is no longer in print. Before a trip to Rome, I purchased 'An Architect's Rome' and read it from cover to cover. Reading 'An Architect's Rome' helped me plan my trip and as I read my enthusiasm for Rome increased. By the time I arrived in Rome I felt as if I knew the city and was returning to visit my favorite places. The author transfered his love for the city to me. On the author's recommendation I took the Ostia Antica day trip and thoroughly enjoyed the day. This is the best book on Rome that I have read.

  3. As an architect, I appreciate John McGuire's personal descriptions of my favorite places in Rome. The illustrations are some of the best I have ever seen. This past Christmas, I gave this book to several friends as a bon voyage gift. We spent the morning over coffee discussing how well Rome is described in this book. Anyone interested in Rome would enjoy reading this book.
