  1. A gripping page turner, this is the fascinating story of a more than average life led in Ireland and Africa, in a world that no longer exists in the middle of the 20th century. Told through the eyes of the writer, this is all the more powerful because the story in it is true. Beginning with childhood living in the house of the lord of the manor in Ireland, the story shows how a life of supposed priviledge is not always an easy one. As we follow our heroine to Africa, we see how her love affair with the continent begins. A life less ordinary indeed, this gives a fascinating insight into the real world of white Africans, the complexities of living in countries full of turmoil.

Apart from anything else the book is well written and interesting, not a usual autobiography, more like travel writing, an insight into a continent and culture.

  1. This guide to Edinburgh unfortunately lacks the quality we're used from Lonely Planet. I couldn't taste any commitment of the author to the subject, it almost looks like that the author wrote the guide during an afternoon visit. Surprisingly, many very interesting features of Edinburgh are not included, like the Botanical Gardens. Many other features are decribed too briefly. When looking for a guide of the town, step into a local bookstore en look for the locally issued handbook of Edinburgh, published bij Mercat Press. It's good souvenir too.

  2. Not only is this book witty, it covers all the city sights and is very useful. This book is written by a different author from the first edition and the change is phenomenal. This book is definitely recommended - the colourful festivals section is totally cool.

  3. This book provided a good introduction to the city of Edinburgh, though the part I used the most and found most helpful was the map section in the back. The maps are very detailed and were extrememly useful to me as I navigated the streets of the city.

  1. IRELAND: A REFERENCE GUIDE FROM THE RENAISSANCE TO THE PRESENT joins others in the 'European Nations' series to provide a historical survey of the political and social changes of a nation and its key players. Both high school and college-level audiences will appreciate the A-Z dictionary reference which details battles, politics, peoples and evens essential to understanding Irish history.

  1. I am not much for writing reviews, but this book deserves to have at least 1 review. I found this book to be of great value! This book is very weighty, with nice thick pages. The book even includes full page fold-outs of photos that could not be contained in a single page (Total of 4 pages for each pullout photo). This book hits the sights of London that do not get a mention in other books, while including the top sights. Each sight gets at least a paragraph worth of description. If you want a book that does the above, then pick this book up!

  2. This book is one of the best photographic books on London that I've seen! I'm an anglophile, and love London, so I collect books on England and Scotland. This book is a great value!
