5 comments about Kauai - Mile by Mile Guide: The Best of the Garden Isle.
  1. Kauai is a beautiful island and words alone aren't enough to convey this. As such, any book on Kauai needs great pictures to complete the message. Unfortunately, this book contains black and white, low-resolution pictures. In some cases, you can hardly make out the object of the picture.

The poor quality of the pictures earns it poor ratings. The words may be fine, but words alone aren't enough in a book about Kauai.

  2. I understand that it's difficult to top The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook, but this book reads like whole passages were lifted from that much better volume. What appears to be original reads like it was written by 15-year-olds, and is mostly just naive drivel. Don't waste your time or money.

  3. Hesitant to buy the book due to some reviews - we were pleased to find the guide is quite resourceful in visiting Kauai. The location coverage was very good and the planning chapters were quite helpful. The authors seem very sincere and clearly love the island. I'd recommend the book to others.

  4. I bought every book available to prepare for our 10 day trip to Kauai but this was one of the three I brought with me to the island itself. This mile by mile breakdown of the sights to be seen is an excellant resource and accompanied us everywhere we went. It is really more like a personal travel log written by the Derrick's for freinds and family then an offical travel guide and I found this very refreshing. The directions were supreb and very accurate and helped us find many out of the way places and reduced wasted time spent getting lost! It does have black and white pictures but who cares when you are here seeing the real McCoy? No travel guide is the be all of guides but with this one in our arsenal we were well prepared to have the best timepossible. Highly recommneded!!

  5. How can one turn beautiful, green, lush Kawai into boredom? Look at this book. The pictures are black and white, blurry, muddy (lack contrast), and appear to be dark grey holes in the page. Honestly I can't even start to read the text as the photo illustrations are so distracting.

  1. The Pacific Ocean is Earth's largest single feature and covers a third of the planet's surface. But photographer Peter Hendrie has found inspiration enough to add a whole new dimension to the beauty and power of its landscape and the richness of its cultures. It's a dimension that allows him to transform landscape and lifestyle from the merely pictorial to a vibrant experience of the Pacific legend. His pictures capture the piquancy of the moment the image was taken, prompting envy of the photographer's vision plus a valuable insight into how to read such evocative images. No other places on Earth possess the enduring magic of Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia, and Hendrie powerfully reinforces their merger of romance and reality.
    I rate Pacific Journeys - 5/5

But photographer Peter Hendrie has found inspiration enough to apply a whole new dimension to the beauty and power of its panorama and the richness of its cultures. It is a dimension that allows him to transform landscape and lifestyle from the purely pictorial to a vibrant experience of the Pacific legend. His images possess the piquancy of the very moments he captured them, prompting an envy of his vision and a thoroughly-satisfying lesson in how to read evocative images. Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia have no equals when it comes to enduring magic, and Hendrie brilliantly reinforces their unique merger of romance and reality.
