  1. This is a great book full of beautiful photos. Best of all it guides you to the really interesting places on all the different islands. There are maps, and directions, and under each site stories are told about the site's amazing past. There are interviews with the locals describing their spiritual beliefs regarding the site. You could enjoy this book just to read about Hawaiian history and all the fascinating things that have gone on in these spiritual places. I couldn't put it down.
The book also led me to some really nice places like a blue freshwater pool right by the ocean.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

  2. What I found particularly fascinating about this book was the way it linked specific places throughout the islands, which can be seen today, with historical lore and people from Hawaii's past. I also enjoyed the way the book brought to life a lot of the mystical, spiritual, side of the Hawaiian geography and tradition. Long ago, when I first visited the beautifully desolate northwest coast of the big island of Hawaii, I had this strange sense that I was not alone. After reading this book, I realize that I, indeed, was not. The spirits of Kamehameha the great, and other warriors of Hawaii's past, live on here.

  1. Absolutely the best book about treating marine injuries with up to date and professional information. This should be a must for anyone spending much time in the water--professionally or recreationally.

  1. Hopefully this will come out in second edition. We need to read how these stories go on! Good anthropology!

  2. Reads like a novel, but is also scholarly. This is a really unique ethnography! My students have loved it. Highly recommended for scholars, textile people, and Indonesia enthusiasts. Great writing, ethnographic details, and up close descriptions of the lives of an amazing range of characters from a "traditional" eastern Indonesian culture in modern times. The chapter about the intersections of cultures in Bali is priceless and would make a good film. By the end of the book, I felt like I knew the main characters and wanted their stories to go on. Good anthropology!

  3. This is an amazing book. It is eloquently written, engaging and insightful...one of the best books out there on Indonesian textiles and their recent transformations. Collectors, scholars and students alike will find this book one of their favorites. I've assigned this book in classes and students love it--they tell me it is one they will keep on their shelves. I agree--it is a keeper!

  1. This book contains a lot of information about the island and its many beaches.

I bought this book from AAA before my first visit to Hawaii. What really surprised me about this book was how the first few chapters were about the Land, Flora&Fauna, History, Government & Economy, and People of the island. From these pages I learned more about the island and its people than your average Hawaiian sun-worshipping tourist.

The book also offers lots of ideas and information for Sports & Entertainment, Shopping, Food and Drinks. Each different area of the island is detailed with a map and minute details about the beaches.

The book lacks the colorful touristy postcard pictures but makes up for it through the sheer amount of information (and good organization) for everyone, be they young or old, jocks or bums, artists or history-buffs, food-connoisseurs or Hawaiian-drink enthusiasts.

Overall a great buy, and will use it on all future trips to O'ahu.

NOTE: This book covers O'ahu island exclusively (and not any of the other 6 Hawaiian islands). There is information on how to reach the other islands though, but nothing beyond that.

  2. This is a high quality guidebook from respected company Moon Handbooks. I love the smaller format, medium-small type, and thin pages, so when you tote this along, it is very lightweight. It's also very durable for a paperback--it's meant to be carried around in your backpack during your journeys.

This covers just the island of Oahu, which is home to Waikiki and Honolulu. It's broken up into chapters on the land, the ecology, the history, arts & music, sporting & recreation, and so on. All of this makes great plane ride reading. The bulk of the book is a geographically-divided tour around the island, listing beaches, attractions, accomodations, food & drink, etc. I used this to get around Waikiki and found all the info to be up to date and very useful.

  1. This may be an OK book in companion with another travel book - Maui Revealed - but not worth it alone. And if you are going to buy another travel book, then this one just isn't necessary. I read through the entire book and only found a few items worth noting. all of these items are found in other travel books. don't bother spending the money.
