  1. I was quite delighted with this book. The author, who was a 14 year old Japanese-American living on Maui when the attack occured, gives several different viewpoints of the attack and the days following. His characters are entertaining, and his use of "local" language is accurate. Definately recommended for anyone who wants a view of the Pearl Harbor attack from the local people's perspective.

  1. An encyclopedia, not a travel guide. I purchased this book, but had to purchase EYEWITNESS TRAVEL GUIDE instead. Very disappointing.

  2. I just returned from my first trip to Hawaii (business mostly, but vacation too) and this book was my constant companion. This is an incredibly useful book that described what to do, where to go and how to get around - this book is packed with detailed and useful information. All of the islands are described, and sample itineraries are provided for each of the islands. Like all the Frommer's travel books, this book will give you lots of ideas about what to see and where to eat and where to stay. There were some minor errors in the text (e.g. the bus passes are considerably more expensive than stated in the book), and I didn't always agree with their assessments of restaurants, but these are minor complaints. I wouldn't pay any attention to the negative reviews of this book, if you are a first timer to Hawaii, this book would be a great travelling companion.

  3. If you go anywhere, you'll have to get Frommer's books! They say all there is too say. Fantastic and a good vacation tool!

  4. Better than Hawaii for Dummies but not as well organized. It's already saved us $80 in helicopter tours from what the cruiseline was charging us. There are great gift tips, too.

  5. My husband and I honeymooned in Oahu. We took this and the Lonely Planet guide to Hawaii. Taking both gave each of us something to read on the plane. I'd take either or both again.

  1. I had to write an economics paper, and one particular chapter was very helpful for me. The chapters were all editorials on different aspects of the finances of living in Hawaii. They are very throughough and appear to be accurate. The dialog is easy to read, and there are amusing cartoons. It is a fun and easy book to explore if you want this sort of information. The topics are interesting, which I didn't think was possible since the overall subject is economics. Overall, interesting and informative.

  1. hi everyone, please buy, read and cherish this book! you would not believe how much work went into this - I know because I'm the author's daughter. BUY BUY BUY! :) thanks

  2. This is a remarkable look at the untamed American West of 1834-1837 through the eyes of a young naturalist. Despite its age, this account is quite readable. The smaller segments describing Townsend's visits to Hawaii, Tahiti and Chile are also enjoyable.

Since this is a diary, it does have some flat spots (not every day can be an adventure), but mostly Townsend fills his descriptions with details and color that bring his encounters alive. You can sense Townsend maturing as the journey goes on. One suggestion to the editors: If a new edition is produced, it would be nice to include a map of Townsend's travels, because in some places it's hard to tell where he is.

A tip to the reader: Skip the introduction, since it's mostly just a summary of what you'll be reading. It does, however, contain a description of what happened to Townsend after the book, so go back and read that once you finish.

1 comments about Paradise: Road to Hana, Maui.
  1. "Paradise: Road to Hana, Maui" is more than just a vacation guide, it is a crystal clear picture window into the exotic and beautiful destination that is Hana, Maui. This gentle travelogue reminds us all to slow down and take the time to appreciate the beauty and Aloha that surrounds us. Even if you have not been to Hawaii personally, this book captures the history, personality, and feelings of the islands which are obviously dear to the hearts of the authors. The clean design lends itself to relaxing enjoyment of the enchanting photographs and the meandering drive to Hana. Much more than just an ultimate destination or vacation spot, the inherent spirituality of Hana has been infused into the pages allowing the reader to enter and enjoy the experience from anywhere books can be read! Take this small book with you on your journey so you don't miss a single attraction, or better yet, keep it safely at home to share your wonderful vacation memories over and over again.

  1. If you've seen enough of the standard guides on Hawaii, try this one out as an alternative to the regularity of the norm. We discovered lots of amazing "locals only" secrets from this book. You will too if you are going to HI for outdoor activity.
