- The title of this book truly describes Hawaii's children. In no other place in the world will you find the mixtures of races as you do in Hawaii. This book, utilizing pictures of children, show the rest of the world the racial harmony does exist. The pictures of the "golden children", where east meets west, are beautiful and enchanting. Being a "local" made me homesick but also very proud of my heritage as one of these kids. Copies of this book should be placed in school and public libraries across the country as a testimonial that a multi-racial society can and does exist in beautiful Hawaii. Aloha and Mahalo to Mr Fassler who did a wonderful job.
- This is a great book that everyone of all ages should read! (No heavy duty reading, but great photos and descriptive text.) An article about racial issues in a parents' magazine prompted me to find this book, because it -is- possible for children of multi-racial backgrounds to grow up harmoniously together! I grew up in Hawaii with friends of all colors, lived on both coasts of the mainland (Continental U.S.), returned to Hawaii, and realized that while growing up, we rarely had to deal with serious racial issues. As Mr. Fassler and Mr. Frank DeLima so eloquently state in the text and foreword, as kids we acknowledged our differences, likenesses, and even poked fun at each other and ourselves (thanks to wonderful comedians like Mr. DeLima!). We were still able to live side-by-side with each other -- probably from an ingrained attitude that when one lives on an island, you have to get along to survive! There is hope! Aloha and Mahalo for a great book that aptly illustrates this!

- Being from Hawaii, I found this book to be very true and accurate. It helped me experience beaches I didn't even know about.
- I used this book when doing research for a web site during our one year stay on Maui. It's awesome! The in-depth info on every beach on the island is up-to-date and insightful, with tid-bits of info only locals know, including history, geography, what's offshore, and more!

- I'm a frequent visitor to Maui, and this book has helped me learn about the beaches not only of Maui, but of Moloka'i, Lana'i, and Kaho'olawe.
If you are looking for plenty of nice large color photos, this isn't the book. There are only two of them, on the front and back covers. But there are a reasonable number of good black-and-white shots. Plus, there are thirty useful maps.
What I like about this book is all the information about so many beaches I never would have known about. I've tried quite a few of them now.
There is more to Maui than just the beaches, but I think the beaches are the best part.
Oh yes, my favorite of the many beaches? Napili.

4 comments about My Time in Hawaii: A Polynesian Memoir.
- I was introduced to this book by a writer who had lived in Hawaii for most of the '70s, and she felt that it was one of the best personal memoirs of living in Hawaii that she had read. Nelson taught at the University of Hawaii in the '70s, and traveled throughout the islands. She captures the beauty, the sadness, the cultural tensions and improbable harmonies of a people and a setting that is so much more than a Waikiki Beach tourist-trap destination. Her description of the people of Moloka'i was one my motivations to find the true meaning of **Aloha** and visit what may be the friendliest place in Hawai'i. St. Martin's should at least bring it back in trade paperback - the travel sections of most bookstores are dying for a distinctly different look at one of the most fascinating and spiritual places in the world
- A great book that captures the feel of Hawaii. Victoria's Hawaii is gone but the 'feel' of the place is timeless. Her description of Hawaiian music, plate lunches and hundreds of other details of island life are right on target. If you've been captivated by the idea of island life...read this book. You'll be on the beach, breathing in plumerias as long as your eyes cross the words.
- I read this book for the first and second times last night.
It was my second time, because I had read the book when first published. But because I lived in Hawaii back then, perhaps I could not fully absorb the stunning setting and the author's many insights about island life. I lived in Hawaii for 25 years, and in my second reading Ms. Nelson captured and returned me to 1970s Hawaii. At the same time, I learned a great deal from her book that I did not discern during my time in Hawaii. The book is about much more than Hawaii. Anyone who has ever been young will identify with this memoir, and will come away richer for the author's uncanny powers of observation about universal themes.

2 comments about Mapeasy's Guidemap to Hawaii.
- I really liked this map for it's appeal to tourists. It shows a lot of tourist attractions and details that most other maps don't (even good locations for snorkeling). It could show more of the smaller "offroad" streets, but otherwise, I would recommend it. The best maps that I found, though, were in Hawaii (usually at the tourist destinations) ;). Have a great trip!
- I have a Boston map and loved the detail of each street and the retail and restaurant establishments. The map of Hawaii in particular Maui lacked any detail at all. Only main highways and streets were listed and without above mentioned detail. Very disappointing.
