  1. This is the Hawaii that you were dreaming of! Lush , tropical paradise without the competition of crowds at the beach! Let this author guide you to a private waterfall or atop a lava rock mountain to appreciate all the beauty hawaii has to offer. Great trail directions. Easy to follow with bits of history thrown in for entertainment. Offers trails for all ability levels, day or overnight hikes.

  2. As time is of the essence while travelling, I wanted to make the most of my time on the islands. This book allowed me to explore and choose a hike that was perfect for the length of my stay. I felt comfortable with the route laid out on paper. I was dissatisfied with THE BUS route and scheduling on Oahu as compared to the simple statement under how to get there. I had to explore a different route and connection but felt that THE BUS system was to blame. Otherwise, I felt that the book did sufficiently lead to the perfect hike for me at the time. The trail was beautiful and I look forward to using the book again down the road.

  3. We used this guide to choose and find trails to hike during a three week trip to Hawaii in 2002. We only went on 9 of the 44 hikes described, but this guide was nearly ideal for us with clear and easy-to-use descriptions and instructions.

  1. Spend an extra 5 bucks and get Maui Revealed or one of the thicker guides. This one is a lot of pictures, little real travel advice.

  1. I'm not usually a big fan of guide books. But this one helped immensely on my trip. It is so accurate in its advice that I often felt the strange feeling of walking in the footsteps of the author. For example, it describes a hidden path at a lookout point, and sure enough its there. Or when it says that a parking lot is going to be full at 8 am in the morning; it will be.

But the most valuable information to me was the "Highlights" page at the beginning of each section. Here the author tells you the "must see parts of the island." In my experience he is right every time. For example, I never would have thought to visit Limahuli Botanical Gardens. But it turned out to be one of the best parts of the trip.

I highly recommend this book if you are going to Kaua'i for even just a few days.

  1. A good read for the saltwater shore fisherman no matter where he fishes. However most of the material is specific for the Hawaiian Islands. A lot of detail in rigging for tackle busting fish. Covers tackle, technique, bait, chumming, and construction of homemade gear. A lot of fishing books include fishing from pier, boats etc. This is just from shore.

  2. In the book store, I chose between this and "Fishing Hawaii Style" by Jim Rizzuto, but I think I should have bought the latter.

Mr Sakamoto does give you a good introduction on how to bait/tie knots/treat tides. He talkes about how to whip from the shore and patterns to reel.

But there are a lot of times you stop asking yourself "how?".
Take Slide-Bait fishing. There are almost no illustrations showing how this is to be done, only described in text.

He tries not to trample on anyone's feet by not being to specific on where on the Hawaiian Islands things take place.

  3. This book is a very good book to have for any fisherman. Whether you're beginner or a seasoned fisherman you will enjoy this book. Full of useful information, tips & tricks, detailed illustrations and some good fishing stories. I've read it 4 times already! Thanks Mike Sakamoto!

  1. I just wish there could have been more beaches and detail. I found more places I wanted to swim just by looking at the big map I had along. Compared to all the other books for this island this one, for the money, is the thinnest with the least information.

Princeville didn't strike me as being very Hawaiian. It was a manicured housing development.

  2. Book arrived on time and in good condition. My trip is in August 08, so after the trip I will tell you how good it was if it helps me during the trip.

  1. The Pacific Ocean is Earth's largest single feature and covers a third of the planet's surface. But photographer Peter Hendrie has found inspiration enough to add a whole new dimension to the beauty and power of its landscape and the richness of its cultures. It's a dimension that allows him to transform landscape and lifestyle from the merely pictorial to a vibrant experience of the Pacific legend. His pictures capture the piquancy of the moment the image was taken, prompting envy of the photographer's vision plus a valuable insight into how to read such evocative images. No other places on Earth possess the enduring magic of Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia, and Hendrie powerfully reinforces their merger of romance and reality.
    I rate Pacific Journeys - 5/5

  1. This book is written by the guy who wrote the only serious Elvis biography while Elvis was alive, but this is not at all like that book. Instead, it's packed with great photos of Elvis in Hawaii, many from the local paper. There's also set lists from the benefit concerts he did -- written by hand by Elvis! Very fun!

  2. All Elvis fans will recognize this title as a line from the song Blue Hawaii sung by Elvis in the movie with the same title.
However it's not only that it's also what Jerry Hopkins new book is all about; Telling the story of Elvis, following his dreams and having fun in paradise surroundings. Elvis visited the Hawaiian Islands many times, sometimes for business when filming on location or for one of the six live performances on the islands but also for a (well-deserved) vacation.

Jerry takes the reader on a stroll through the 50's, 60's and 70's as we follow Elvis from his first visit to the Islands in 1957 till his last visit 20 years later. Besides the obvious close-up look at the 3 "Hawaiian movies" ( Blue Hawaii / Girls Girls Girls / Paradise Hawaiian Style) the reader also gets to "hear" such funny stories as how the first concert in Hawaii (1957) was finalized (Colonel Tom Parker is supposed to have made a deal with an Australian promoter by winning a "game of dice" !!) and the story about a hilarious concert promotion by an Elvis impersonator
(No, this time there was no involvement by The Colonel). Not only do we get to know more about Elvis' activities in Hawaii, we also get to learn a bit more about Hawaii' natives with an Elvis connection, such as Karate teacher Ed Parker and James Shigeta (co-star in Paradise Hawaiian Style).

However, to me the highlight of this book must be the sections where we get to hear the stories of people who where actually there at the time.
People like country comedian Minnie Pearl, Velma Fisher (passenger on the SS Matsonia that sailed Elvis to Hawaii on his first trip in 1957), Tom Moffatt (Hawaiian D.J.) and Marty Pasetta (producer of the Aloha from Hawaii special). All have an interesting story to tell about their time with Elvis.

To me this book is a welcome addition to Jerry' previous two Elvis-biographies (Elvis: A Biography & Elvis: The Final Years). The book also features about 100 photos of which some are rare or never seen before. Quality of the photos varies from fair to very clear but the majority of them are interesting to see.

This leaves us with one big question: "Why did Elvis love Hawaii so much ?" I think the answer to this question can be found all-over in this book but is best described by Tom Moffatt when he says: "In Hawaii he could relax and wander more freely ...... people here respect his privacy"
Guess that alone was enough for Elvis to make Hawaii his paradise...............

  3. Elvis had an affinity for Hawaii: he made three films there, did six concerts (including the historic 'Aloha' satallelite broadcast, and had many longtime friends. This loving assemblage of pictures and anecdotes, by one of Presley's first biographers, is full of the kind of critical judgment and eye for local detail that is often lost in fan-oriented books of this sort. There's pictures of him being casual with local people, accepting local awards, hanging out at the local radio station, and having a good time all around. Profusely illustrated with photos from private collections as well as official documents, this is a lovely keepsake.

  4. Elvis In Hawai'i is a unique look at the life of the legendary rock singer Elvis Presley, focusing especially on his love of the Hawai'ian islands and the people who lived there. Elvis' fondness of his favorite vacation spot is brought to life with over 100 black-and-white and color photographs, some never before published, and an upbeat yet adroitly narrated text by Jerry Hopkins. Elvis In Hawai'i is especially recommended reading for the legions of fans and admirers of "The King" of rock 'n roll.

  5. This book is a wonderful description of the times and events that Elvis spent on Hawaii. From making three movies "Blue Hawaii", "Girls, Girls,Girls" and "Paradise Hawaiian Style" to his "Aloha from Hawaii" concert. Even the explanation of his involvement of the construction of the U.S.S Arizona Memorial in 1961.
Had it not been for Elvis, there wouldn't be a Memorial for the U.S.S Arizona today. At the time Elvis received great praise and a plaque was placed at the memorial for his efforts. Yet today the plaque is gone, Elvis's contribution to the U.S.S Arizona nearly erased from memory.
The "Aloha from Hawaii" concert was a benefit for a cancer center. We need to remind people that Elvis was not just an entertainer, but he gave so much to needy causes.
The book is filled with pictures, memorabilia and a wealth of inside information on his life.
Elvis in Hawaii is a wonderful glimpse into the amazing time that Elvis spent in paradise.
