  1. Frommer (may he rest in peace) was the pioneer of budget travel books. He has now been overtaken by other writers for the impecunious and his epigones do not have his wit and originality - they write in humorlesss cliches. It's worth buying all the books you can because even budget travel to Europe is a major expense. I think he devotes to much space to restaurant reviews in places where there are rows of restaurants with their prices and menus on display. Hotel reviews are more useful. Budget travel books have to be bang up-to-date and this one has a 1998 publication date. A 2001 edition for the Islands is promised. No illustrations except maps.

  1. Initial impressions of the book are good. The author has even included ferry timetables. Closer reading however reveals that most of the book is a waste of paper. The ferry timetables are last years which have very little bearing on the current yar - why bother including them? Additionally the author does not appear to have visited some islands and others have had only flying visits so a lot information is incorrect or sketchy in detail. To cover this lack of research he seems to make up detail some of which is wrong or just irrelevant - e.g. he has a fascination with windmills. The worst aspect of the guide is the authors negative phrasing - he does not seems to rate any island, his attitude is that some are better than others but still not up to much! Would not bother with this book.

  2. My experience of this guide book is the exact opposite of the previous reviewer. I have travelled to more than 30 islands and found the guide to be accurate and extremely useful. If you know what kind of vacation you want (quiet beaches versus lots of nightlife, for example) the pages which rate the islands are worth the price of the book. The page which shows how the various ferry lines interconnect with one another is indispensable for planning an island hopping tour. And once you get to an island the description of the island is almost always accurate. However I have found that the names of hotels and restaurants sometimes change over the winter and the guide may not have have caught up with the change. Of course, ferry timetables do change but even a one year old timetable helps you to understand whether the ferry runs everyday, or perhaps only twice a week.
Finally, the brief guide to Athens and accompanying map, is also very helpful. I highly recommend the book.

  3. This book provides allot more detail than your average island guide book including town maps, ferry schedules and details about numerous tourist activities. I have seen no other books with town maps such as these. Of course this level of specific details will change frequently, so reconfirm the data you find here. For instance, a previous reviewer complained that ferry schedules were a year old. Of course that is to be expected; really you should not even trust schedules more than a week old!

If you are somewhat self-sufficient and able to confirm what may be out of date, this is a great guide book. If you are not, maybe you should consider a vacation in Orlando.

1 comments about Aegean Summer: A Family Odyssey.
  1. This book is a personal family history of a special vacation that changed one family's lives. In the 1960s, Mimi Summerskill was a divorced mother of five, who, in addition to bringing up her children alone, was also required to support her ex-husband, who was mentally ill and hospitalized. She was working long hours trying to get her travel business established, and shared her house with another single mom. Her eldest son was getting ready to start law school, and the remaining children were approaching university age, when out of the blue, Mimi received an inheritance of $30,000. She could have set the money aside for the children's education, but instead, Mimi decided they would have one last vacation together, as a family. She felt that over the years, her children had missed much of being a family, between her ex-husband's illness, and her struggle to keep food on the table, and she was determined to provide a family experience that would stay with them forever. On a whim, she took the inheritance money, traveled to Greece and rented a yacht with crew for 3 months. All five of her children joined her on the yacht, and together they explored the islands and their relationships as a family under the Greek sun. Over the course of the summer, Greece got under their skin, and they established a second home there together.

This is no ordinary travel book- -it's a very personal story about an extremely difficult time in a family's life. Each of the individuals was poised to move on; indeed, some had already taken steps away. This trip remade them and gave them a new center to start from. The writing is extremely smooth, effectively balancing descriptive details and diary events with introspective analysis. It's a great story of what a determined woman can accomplish with the help of her family.
