2 comments about Athens: Scenes from a Capital City.
- John Cleave understands Athens, and he knows how to present his enhanced photographs in a clear and artistic fashion. The work of Mr Cleave and Didier Millet Publishers in Singapore helps to produce a truly quality book which one will not only want to have on the coffee table, but to read, as well. Worth every penny, and especially when his royalties go to The American Farm School in Greece, an extremely worthy hundred year old institution.
- Athens:Scenes from a Capitol City is not only artistically composed but the contents are presented in a way that serve both tourist and scholar. Old hands in Greece will be delighted by the verbal and pictorial information, while travelers can rely on it for accurate backround.

1 comments about Knopf MapGuide: Bangkok (Knopf Mapguides).
- This is an amazing work of map publishing. The fold out format is absolutely perfect for accessing the map quickly during a day of tourism. The map divides Bangkok into six different neighborhoods and for each one provides a highly detailed map complete with street names and outlines of major buildings and landmarks. In addition, the mapguide includes many good descriptions of the cities sites, and includes some tips on restaurants and entertainment. Some of these listings were quite good and off the beaten path. I used another guidebook to help plan my trip, but during the day, this mapguide was my primary reference.
As with any travel guide, there are some errors with opening times, but I can't hold that against them. Overall, this new mapguide series is an exciting new development in travel publishing. Also, it should be mentioned that this was originally published in France by Gallimard Loisirs. If you know French, therefore, you can probably get this in its original language.

2 comments about Lonely Planet Mediterranean Europe on a Shoestring (Lonely Planet Mediterranean Europe).
- Lonely Planet has great books and this one certainly was. It's very thorough and tells alot about things that interest travellers. They are up to date and tell you the pros and cons of the different countries. I liked it alot and I know that other people will too.
- The Lonely Planet guides are excellent for any locale..but this edition (covering Italy, Spain, Greece, France, Portugal and even Morocco) is a must-read for the quintessential backpacker jumping on a plane for Europa. These guides excel at recommending lodging of many price ranges (from youth hostels to 5-star hotels) and meal choices of the same range (excellent recommendation for outdoor markets.."buy a loaf of bread, a block of cheese and a bottle of wine here"..which is a plus as many guides catering to this area focus on only older travels with large budgets..or persons seeking to spend only a dollar a day or some insanity..it's always good to have the most information possible..and it's included here. Entertainments ideas from free plaza and park visiting to museums, discotechqes, architecture, boat rides etc. etc. are included..good for young and old. It even lists culture-sensitve information such as appropriate dress for visiting churches and monasteries as well as travel-safe tips for women. Book your Eurorail pass and get going.

2 comments about Pausanias: Travel and Memory in Roman Greece.
- For those hoping to find a translation of Pausanias, this isn't it. It is a collection of essays about Pausanias.
I haven't read it yet, so my rating is based solely on my disappointment that it is not what I was expecting. I imagine I'll still enjoy the essays, but I was really hoping for the actual work itself.
- I gave this book 5 stars because the person who read it last gave it one - and they hadn't read it either but at least most of us would know that it was not the work of Pausanias himself because the author is not Pausanias himself but a woman and the title is clearly dealing with Pausanias .... so, stupid of Texas - why are you even bothering ????
it's got a lovely cover from what i can see and it sounds fascinating.. i may well buy it and i can wholeheartedly recommned it

2 comments about Blue Guide Athens and Environs.
- This book is so pertinent for those people who are going to Athens, the capital of Greece. It is much more comprehensive about the city than the Blue Guide to Greece, which is great if you plan to stay in the city for awhile. Its commentaries are easy to read and understand and give you a full view of what to expect. Get it if you can.
- I just returned from spending a week in Athens and used this guide the entire time. It is a fantastic personal guide for the whole city, taking you to all the ancient sites as well as the more different places. The book explains the history of the sites, and then tells you almost stone-for-stone what you are looking at for each site. There are wonderful parts of Athens I would have missed had I not had this book with me. It also goes through places outside Athens, such as the sites at Sounion and Eleusis.
If you're interested in ancient history (and especially archaeological sites), then you can't do better than to take this guide with you to Athens.
