1. This book has wonderful pictures, which is why I bought it. It doesn't have a lot of practical information about hotels and such, but it will give you ideas about what you'd enjoy seeing, then you can go to the Rough Guide or something for the nuts and bolts.

1. I don't own this edition but I have an ebook of the original that this is a facsimile of. Basically it's the geography of india compared to the descriptions of Arrian and Ptolemy and a Chinese explorer. That part is fantastic but the maps are absolutely incomprehensible. There are bold lines going every which way (possible routes of alexander?), barely legible names that may be towns, rivers, mountains, etc. The author tried to put too much information into each map. Perhaps if one could find a good atlas this book could be used in conjunction with it. However, I'm still looking for a good historical atlas of india in the classical era. If anyone knows of one, please let me know.

1. The late Miss Grace was the foremost authority on ancient wine jars, amphorae, and worked for many years at the Agora in Athens. This book is the result of years of experience and therefore gives the reader all the benefit of her wide knowledge. Nowhere else can one find such a succinct look at these very interesting jars. The pamphlet is particularly valuable for the non-expert who just wants to know which type of jar is which, how they were used and what they contained. Very well done!

1. I thought this book was useful but there was so much information to get through. When I travel, I normally don't read up on the local plant life or different species of insects in that area first. But there are lots of pictures and overall, it's a helpful guide.

2. I have just returned from Athens and was greeted by this beautiful just-released Knopf Guide.
   It was such a pleasure to revisit those sights I miss so badly - History, culture and the sights of Greece are presented in an easy-to-read, concise format, with superb graphic presentations. One almost feels like they are viewing the museums or ancient sites referred to within.
   This Guide is well-researched, fresh and definitely current !
