1. Those who are devoted to the life and works of Peter Levi will enjoy this book. It is primarily about his then newly-acquired step-family, his emotional life, and (very peripherally) about Greece. He has edited or written good reference works on Greece; this is not one of them. It is a source for his biographer.



2. "The Hills of Kronos: A vividly personal discovery of Greece" is the full title of this travelogue by Levi, an account of his time in Greece in the mid Sixties. I think it's a far more interesting read than Levi's "Light Garden of the Angel King" of his Afghan travels with Chatwin, mostly because he's far more excited by Greece. He meets and is befriended by Sefaris, discourses on Colonel Leake (no relation, sadly), and generally discovers Greece, modern demotic Greece (and a bit of the classical). The effect is something like Peter Mayle's books a decade later, but rather more engaging.



3. This is an engaging read that affords a picture a Greece from after the Second World War through the military dictatorship of the 1960's. Levi, who was a Jesuit priest, archeologist and poet, is an ideal commentator on Greece's sacred past and profane present of those years. This is a good companion to Durrell and Miller.
