- This memoir provides a unique cross section of life in Nazi Germany before the war. The author presents the stories of the things she saw and the people she met while staying in Germany in an engaging and unbiased manner. The stories are unusual in content, from the life in of forest tenders to an account of how the citizens of one city keep their town green by watering vine roots in their basements.
The author doesn't try to tell you how to think, she merely presents the evidence as she saw it. And that evidence is a valuable clue to understanding how the German people could support a regime that proved to be as violent and hateful as the Nazi government was. This is one of my favorite accounts of the time period, and is one of the most memorable books I've ever read.

2 comments about Germany by Bike: 20 Tours Geared for Discovery (By Bike).
- Definitely the best cycling guide book there is about Germany. I grew up in this country and thought I knew it well - yet Nadine Slavinski's book reveals a treasure of little known secrets. Her tours provide a brilliant mixture of Germany's best in terms of bicycle touring and you can tell that she has spent quite some time working and researching in the 'Old World'
- My wife and I lived in Germany for 2 1/2 years and used that time as an opportunity to get into bicycling. One of the first books we bought was "Germany by Bike"...a smart move on our part. Of the 20 tours listed in the book we took 3 of them and can say we were most pleased with those. The directions are simple and easy to follow and the trails are wonderful. If you're looking for a great guide to explore Germany by bike then look no further.

2 comments about Durer's Record of Journeys to Venice and the Low Countries.
- In these days of superstars you fight to read everything you can about the person of interest. In my opinion, Albrecht Durer WAS the quintessential superstar of Rennaisance Germany, and here are letters written in his own hand. Sometimes funny, but always interesting, you learn of the ways barter was used to pay off debts, how copies of his many fine works were spread throughout Germany and the accounting of each "stiver" spent of Willibald Pirckheimer's money (his benefactor). Even the fateful journey to Zeeland to see the corpse of a whale, which lead to his death, is chronicled here. When you think in terms of the current speed of information gathering--it's hard to believe we are talking about 1514 and not 1998.
- Albrecht Dürer was an incredible person and an amazing artist, and this book provides us with the chance to look into some of his thoughts. The first half of the book consists of Dürer's letters to Wilibald Pirkheimer, written while Dürer was in Venice (1506). These are fascinating, Dürer's description of the Venetians and of his artwork completed during his Venetian stay are especially of interest. The second half of this book is a record of Dürer's journey to the Netherlands (1520-1521). It is quite dull when he is merely recording how much money he has spent on what and where he has eaten. But he does describe things such as the great procession of Our Lady's Church in Antwerp, and he writes about his fears after Martin Luther is taken prisoner, which makes having to read the dull bits worth it.

- Fantastic travel book...led me to interesting sights I would not have found on my own or with other guide books. The restaurant recommendations were also very good. Convenient sized book, easy to carry. Really liked how the chapters were arranged by key sections of the city, made it easy to thoroughly explore Munich! Have used the AAA Spiral Guide for Berlin and just bought the guide for Amsterdam.

1 comments about Bavarian Creme: Memories From Munich Campus.
- Being at the University of Maryland's Munich Campus in the 60's was an exciting time in my life. Circe has captured so many wonderful stories of those who were fortunate enough to experience their freshman and/or sophomore years in college. I highly recommend Bavarian Creme to any of the thousands who attended.
