5 comments about Cheap Eats in Paris (Cheap Eats).
- We have been living in Paris for the last 4 months and have tried to use this book with varied success. We have found may of the entries outdated. In fact the first two restaurants we tried to find no longer exist. Many of the "Eats" are by no means cheap (Paris is expensive anyway). There are lots of cheaper ways to eat well in Paris. We have had about the same luck trying places that look interesting.
- I've taken this book with me on 2 trips to Paris, & enjoyed every recommendation that we followed from the book. (Actually had to buy the book twice since first copy was lost by a friend on their trip to Paris). It gives you a pretty good description of the environment/background of the restaurant, selects several good dishes worth trying, & lets you know if there's a prix fixe menu. It may be time for an update, but if you want to stay in a budget, you won't find a better guide for eating in Paris unless you have friends that live there.
- I didn't remember reading this book three years ago until my partner bought a copy. Naturally a restaurant book written several years ago will be somewhat out of date, but this one is laughably out of date. When I tried to find a restaurant in 2000, I was usually disappointed, because it wasn't there. Now even fewer can be found in Zagat's Survey. It was hard to locate them with the maps, because of numerous errors. Not only will you be horribly served by this book, you will waste a lot of time.
- Back in the late '90's & early 2000's this book was the best of its kind & rated 5 stars then. Our favorite restaurant of all time "A La Biche au Bois" & our 2nd favorite "Le Petit St. Benoit" were found here & both are still in business. But copyright 1998 (meaning the data was probably gathered in 1997) makes it oudated. What drives this home is that the menu prices are given in French francs.
Personal message to Sandra: We need you back in Paris updating your book!!!
- If you were to assume that this book would have some incorrect information since it was published this long ago you would still be disspointed. Not only are the prices still in francs but half of the resturants listed have moved, changed their prices drastically or simply no longer exist. This book might of been valuable when it was printed but no longer is. Don't waste your money.

- Take a look at the customer reviews for the hardback version before purchasing this book. I wish that I had. I was so disappointed by this book. The storyline is disjointed and the writing style (those long, rambling sentences) is downright annoying. I liked the photo on page 74 and not much else. I wanted to sell my copy of this book, but used paperback copies are going for 49 cents. I guess that tells you something.

3 comments about Touring In Wine Country: Loire (Touring in Wine Country).
- Hugh Johnson has a knack for giving very down to earth descriptions of the small villages, and the various chateaux to visit if you're into wine. He also lets you know the quaint places to stay in hidden away places, and where to stay away from so you can enjoy your experience in the wine country
- Hubrecht Duijker knows Loire Valley and its wines better than many of us who live in this beautiful region of France. His knowledge of local treasures goes from hidden villages such as Martigné-Briand to Gérard Depardieu's castle in Tigné or Louis Métaireau and his "vignerons d'art". He will tell you where, in Mouzillon, you can picnic on this splendid small gallo-roman bridge or advise you on "restaurant de la vallée" in Clisson, an impressive place where to enjoy Muscadet wine. The author was appointed "Officier de l'Ordre du Mérite Agricole" by the French Government. Just to tell how authorative this "wine lover's touring guide" can be. Whether you plan to visit our region by car, riding a bicycle or a horse, you will love this book... even if you do not like wine that much!
- I am using this book to plan an upcoming trip, so I haven't had a chance to check the book's recommendations, but I have been to this region before.
I have purchased 4 or 5 other books to research the Loire Valley and this is the most useful. It doesn't contain much information about the chateaux in the region (generally repeated in all the other books). What it does have is some really useful photographs that help to give a sense of what the different towns are like, detailed and nuanced recommendations of places to stay and places to eat, and a guide to a few hundred or so vineyards. I strongly recommend this book to anyone at all interested in wine, who also wants information about some of the towns and villages too small to end up in the regular tourist guides.

4 comments about In the South of France (Imago Mundi Book).
- What a remarkable and brilliant collection of photos are included in this beautiful new book! I don't usually go for the photo gift book, but this is like nothing I've ever seen. Each photo captures some wonderful moment of the French landscape, whether it be a natural or built one. I loved the way Krohn understands the color and shapes of any one of his photographs-they really become a bit like abstract paintings at times. The section of quotations by a variety of authors (from Robert Stevenson to MFK Fisher) placed at the start of the book is a wonderful treat. A perfect book for the holiday season.
- Photographer Don Krohn's rich palette and unique vision are highlights of this volume. From abstract landscapes to witty village scenes, he reveals an intimate knowledge of this legendary place. His preface demonstrates a sweeping knowledge of the history of Provence and also reveals something of how an artist approaches a new subject. His generous selection of quotes by various artists and authors adds to our appreciation of the many qualities of this beautiful spot. A great gift or mini-vacation for the coffee table.
- I received this elegant and enjoyable book as a gift and will surely buy it in the future to give to friends. The photographs offer glimpses of the deep beauty and daily life of the south of France, and the graceful text adds personal, historic and artistic background - a rare combination from one artist.
- In the South of France, by Don Krohn, is so much more than a book of beautiful photographs. I was drawn into the book by the luscious color plates, eager to see what this famous land - the south of France - looked like. Page after page, rolling sunlit landscapes and intimate private moments delighted my painter's eye and wanderlust! But upon entering into the narrative that accompanies the photographs, I became enthralled with a sense of the day-to-day life there as it was revealed in the pages, and I found many passages that went from poetic to descriptive to profound. I had a lot to ponder as I again meandered through the photographs, choosing a few favorites that still beckon me to the south of France. Mr. Krohn was able to bring the area to life for me both visually and intellectually, even though I have never been there!

1 comments about The Rough Guide to Languedoc & Roussillon 2 (Rough Guide Travel Guides).
- The mark of a good travel book is not just the durability of the cover, although that is important; it is also a function of the quality of the research.
This book has both. Not only is the cover tough yet remarkably pliable, but the contents are well written and well researched. While I was in Languedoc over Christmas, Catlos never left my side - my wife and I ate with him, drove with him. Heck, we even followed his advice on where to spend the night. In fact, we even started calling the book "the Catlos"! We felt that the book was a friend who was guiding us through this mysterious and deeply foreign landscape. My wife found his tips for female travellers to be especially helpful and considered. To be frank, not many guidebooks consistently point out where one might purchase certain feminine necessities. I highly recommend this book and suggest that anyone travelling to the region purchase a copy. It'll become like a good pal - albeit one with a flexible laminated cover.
