  1. Whether you've been to the Louvre and want to protect and enhance your memories or you just want to see the most beautiful works of art ever collected this is the perfect book! It gives you history, background info and of course amazing pictures! You're next purchase will be plane tickets to Paris!!

  2. A true masterpiece. A fresh look at one of the world's most extraordinary museums. I received this book as a gift, and I have truly enjoyed it.

  3. This is a great book. It covers all the art departments of the Louvre and does it in a very concise manner. But it has a peculiar presentation format - too many sidebars and info boxes etc mixed-up with the main text, small pics breaking-up the main text too often, and many times it is not easy to match the sidebar to the pic intuitively.

  4. I bought this book for my son before I visited the Louvre because he was majoring in art. A few years later, I went to Paris and visited the Louvre. It was great to look through the book after having been there! It's still his book, but it was so wonderful to have it around after experiencing the incredible galleries in person! If you're going to the Louvre, my suggestion would be to really go through this book FIRST... then go to the Louvre! There's so much there it's overwhelming. I wish I'd planned out my visit there after going through the book.

  1. Paris Jazz is a concise, well-written read for anyone who loves jazz and Paris. Of particular interest to me was the maps as well as addresses detailing where present day jazz venues may be found. I thought the vintage photos sprinkled throughout the book were a great accompaniment to the histories of storied jazz personalities and their haunts. Also loved the very cool cover design! Deborah Gerwig Powell

  2. I've never been to Paris but am a big jazz fan. Although I have only heard of some of the sites (like the Folies Bergere), I had a good time reading about the history of jazz in Paris and all the crazy anedcotes that Luke Miner includes in the book. If I ever make it to Paris I'll definitely take this along, but in the meantime it makes for a really entertaining read.

  3. Let me start by saying I really liked this book. The stories are great and I actually did use this to explore the old and new jazz sites when I was in Paris last week. The only reason I'm not giving it the final star is because I would have preferred a paperback version: it's easier to carry and I don't feel bad about marking the book up or folding down pages. Please print a cheaper paperback version!

  4. a wonderful little book, almost like a minature encyclopedia of information that is easily available, well presented and designed and I love it.

  5. I would think most jazz fans would have at least some idea of the significance of Paris in the history of jazz, if for no other reason than the number of albums that have been cut there or reference the city in the title. "Paris Jazz: A Guide" does a great job showing just how important Paris has truly been. Organized as a guide to the locations of current and former jazz *caves* in the City of Light, and related points of interest, "Paris Jazz" is also a quick and easily-accessible pocket history of the title subject, from the days of the earliest performances by American soldiers -- mainly African-Americans -- during and after the first world war, until today. A list of a couple dozen recommended recordings, relevant to the text, and a listing of contemporary (if less historic) jazz venues rounds out the slim but info-packed pages. I can definitely see this as a one of a handful of guidebooks worth taking with you to Paris, as well as a worthwhile reference to keep handy at home.

3 comments about The Guide to the Architecture of Paris.
  1. There are 58 walks here, richly researched and presented with White's wonderful opinions. There are plenty of drawbacks, however. 1. You must speak pretty fluent French to read this book. White drops untranslated phrases in relentlessly. Even plain old buildings have to be called "Bureaux", "Logements", "Immeuble": Was White's editor as pedantic as White seems? One wonders why "Ambassade des Emirats Arabes Unis" could not have been translated into "Embassy of the United Arab Emirates". Really. 2. The maps are terrible: black and white Michelin maps with 1, 2 or 3 walks shown in grey on 1 map. The map numbering and site numbering system is very difficult to follow. Some readers might like to backtrack from a location on a map to White's text but this is very difficult. 3. Architecture books without photographs are self defeating. The joy, or distaste, the author wishes to share is best illuminated with visual imagery. White is delightfully opinionated but his book is scantily illustrated.

  2. The only other review at the time of this posting is rather unfair, probably because the author misunderstood the purpose of the book. It is a guide for walking the streets of Paris to look at buildings. It is not a coffee-table book. Hence the relative paucity of illustrations. Hence the use of actual French names for buildings and places. (How else would you find them? The signs are not in English. And the reviewer obviously found translation no problem.) And the maps are certainly adequate for finding your way. They show excellent small-scale detail. Perhaps the only "fault" of the book is that it is so compendious and the information so complete that it takes some study to plan your day. But at 446 pgs, it still fits neatly in a handbag or camera pack. The index is very good, and there are 20 blank pages at the back for your personal notes.

  3. I can not believe this book is out of print. A few years ago I spent two weeks in Paris walking a large numbers of these tours. They are set to take the observer from one Metro stop to another through one or more neighborhoods. It is best for an architect or a serious traveller who enjoys looking at, and finding out information about, buildings. It is not a single source of information for the city or a general guidebook by any means. Another great pleasure while using this book is experiencing some of the lesser known areas of Paris that are off of the normal tourist routes. A great, great resource. Get a copy if you can find one.

  1. Looking through this book really made me feel as though I was touring the French countryside. Many of the homes are rural farmhouses or chateaus, and the pictures showcase the warmth and charm of that part of the world. Just beautiful.
