- This book is NOT a listing of restaurants... It's much better than that! It is a region-by-region guide to the gastronomic specialties of France. I particularly liked the format which provides a general overview for province or region, then proceeds to list specifics in a series of box-type menus, followed by personal anecdotes. The best seasons to buy, local market days, suggestions for ordering, pitfalls to avoid... they're all included here. A most entertaining and interesting sourcebook, it's well worth taking with you on a voyage to 'la belle France.'
- This book is informative in every sense of the way. Doing a project for French class first made me look to this book but, the author opens you up to a totally different world. If you are looking to go to France or even if you would like to enhance your knowlege of the country I greatly recomend it.

1 comments about The Companion Guide to Burgundy (Companion Guides).
- This book may have a lot of historical background on the Burgundy area, but it has not been updated in many years, and is layed out in a really dull way. Flipping through a travel book should make a person exicted to be going to this place. This book just made me want to read something else. The Signpost Guide to Burgundy is much more current, contains a lot of the same historical background on the region, and has a lot more pratical information.

2 comments about Touring In Wine Country: Burgundy (Touring in Wine Country).
- This book covers all areas of bungundy in ways it seems only an expect could do - and sometimes understand. All possible areas of interest, known and little known, are listed. The many area/city regional maps are very clean and helpful. The only thing to possibly change is the blow by blow listing of what highway to take where, when to turn right/left, etc. That tends to make the book drag. Overall, definitly worth purchasing if you want to get started in Burgundy or need a driving guide of who does what and where they do it. (If you do use this as a driving guide, don't bother getting a Michelin guide unless you are going outside the appelation.) Makes you want to drink a glass for every word printed.
- I am a professional in the field of wine and food consulting and a former staffer of Cuisine magazine, in New York. After reading through "Touring in Wine Country: Burgundy" by Hubrecht Duijker et al, I feel the book provides a broad understanding of Burgundy wines, but is lacking in several specific areas. For example, in its restaurant and winery suggestions it does not include the address, hours, or credit cards taken. Only the telephone numbers are listed. This would require that you carry around a European cell phone to call ahead to get directions and information, or that you have time to stop and find pay phones while traveling. The writers also assume that you are sufficiently fluent in French to communicate with prorietors to get all the information you need. This, in my opinion, is a serious flaw in the book. Moreover, the vineyard and restaurant recommendatons are written in very small type along the margins of the book - like mouse print. The maps are very general and would not suffice in and of themselves - to get you where you're going. Another book, Fodor's Rivages - Wines and Vineyards of Character and Charm in France, I feel, does a better job on the maps and recommendations-- all have addresses, hours, credit card information, etc. And each winery has a page description so you know beforehand if you want to visit and what the days/hours are. Each winery has a number that corresponds to a location on a map- which is fairly detailed, so you can easily find it.

- What a fantastic reference! I'm in Paris now and it was absolutely instrumental in finding a place to stay and just acclimating in general. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering a long or short term stay in the country. Well done!
- I was pleased to find a book that addressed the practical concerns of Americans moving to France. My husband and I vacation in France each year and want to live there part of the year when we retire. This book was the first I've found that addresses issues like taxes, insurance, buying property and the relative cost of living. We have rented houses in the countryside, and I found that most of the observations and advice are right on with our experience. Although the author obviously loves France, the downside of moving there was presented as well as the many wonderful things about daily life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering spending an extended period in France.
