2 comments about Living in the Turks & Caicos Islands: From Conchs...to the Florida Lottery.
  1. I realize that folks at Amazon can't check all the books they sell, but perhaps a policy regarding content would be a good idea. I wanted a travel guide on the Turks and Caicos . This is nothing more than a collection of memories put to paper. NO , I did not read the whole book. I started reading it, but the level at which it is written did not intrest me. (That is as polite as I can be regarding this "book" ) I would not recommend this book.

  2. This is an important look at what it was to grow up in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Mr. Palmer's recollections let us know what it was like before the Islands were developed for tourism. Charles Palmer allows us to see the Turks and Caicos Islanders move from a rural life into today's modern society. I recommend this book for the traveller who wants to know a lot more than where the best rum punch is served. If you're lucky, you may even meet Charles Palmer on the golf course.

5 comments about The Everything Guide to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and Greater Orlando: Hotels, Restaurants, Major Attractions, and More (Everything Series).
  1. I like the presentation of information in this book. I have been to Disney many times and purchased many guide books, and this is a good one. I especially liked the rating system, for children and adults. Very helpful. It was easy to read and understand, with pictures and maps. Kind of big for traveling, but the information is worth bringing the book along on vacation.

  2. Having had quite a lot of previous Walt Disney World experience, I was really disappointed with this book. I will say that the book looks nice and is laid out all right, but the content is awful. The book mentions attractions and shows that were long gone (I mean years) by it's release date in late 1998. One of Disney's major resort hotels isn't even named properly in the book. There is a big difference between Coronado Springs (correct) and Colorado Springs (wrong). Anyone who has even briefly visited the hotel can pick up on the southwest/Mayan/Aztec theme and should realize that the name Colorado Springs wouldn't make sense. I think if an author is claiming to be enough of an expert on something to write a guidebook, the basic facts should be right, which they are not. Virtually any other guidebook will give you better and more relevant information!

  3. I was looking for a book that covered both Disney World and Universal. I visited DW in 1996 and wanted information about new stuff. I picked up the book at a Brick and Morder B&N and thought it seemed like the best choice.

It's not bad for a 1st time vister. But there are so many holes in the information. I used the web links that were mention in the first chapter like http://www.wdwinfo.com/ which has more info then the book.

They just say "Disney will have a 15 month Millenium Celiberation" no more info about it! That's what I wanted to know. I'm on Amazon today to order a better Disney World book. A good update and a better editor would make this an awsome buy. Big book for under $13, but no pictures like the offical guide and not a lot of inside information. Plus they didn't update for the millenium celibration. Or Islands of adventure in Universal. Just said there there was going to be one.

  4. This book is full of money saving tips. It's fun to read and very informative!

  5. This book is comprehensive, well-writtena and a great all-around vacation planning tool. The money saving tips were particularly useful

2 comments about Going to Miami: Exiles, Tourists and Refugees in the New America (Florida Sand Dollar Books).
  1. This is a journey to Maimi, and a close up look at the many communities within .. Cubans, Vietnamese refugees, and the wealthy retired Jewish people live together here as the tourists swarm in and out regularly. It's a good bit of social history to read and enjoy before visiting..

David Rieff uses much of the book on the Cuban society there, but covers it all in a most interesting guide to the city.

  2. After reading, I felt rather embarrassed for the author, and also slightly for myself for having bought this book. The author comes across a bit like a somewhat depressed, crotchety grandpa who hasn't seen much of the world, as shown by his endless, adulatory and self-congratulatory admiration of those 'crazy', 'exotic' Cubans. I wish I'd marked the page where he laments that these new, more Americanized Cuban teenage girls no longer have the admirably large busts and buttocks of the previous generation. (!)

The author also goes in for a mixture of self-pity mixed with scorn for others, which makes him sound like something of a jerk. For instance, p. 119: "Southwest Miami is often a depressing place, an anthology of middle-class cliches--the bike on the lawn, Daddy coming home from a hard day at the 'oficina', Mom with her list of complaints, dinner smells." Please! The author's portrayal of average family life as a depressing cliche says much more about his dyspeptic state of mind than anything about Miami.

The book also contains some rather dated references, such as his scorn for Phil Donahue (described on p. 74 as "a combination of Mick Jagger, a parish priest, and a gibbon on Ritalin"--yes, Phil Donahue!), rap music, (described on p.179 as "the chant of a mugger or a lunatic") and his embarrassing fascination with that exciting and novel show, "Miami Vice".

There are much better books about Miami and its history. Sorry, gramps.
