  1. I had the opportunity to participate in an in-water interactive program at the Dolphin Connection at Hawk's Cay Resort...the Insider's Guide recommended it as a stop off in our tour of the Florida Keys. The photo in the text does not give this program justice...you have to participate to believe how interesting and personal our time with the dolphins was. The trainers were friendly and knowledgable...and made us feel like we were part of their family, too. If you are planning a trip to the keys, this book is a MUST HAVE!

  2. The diving section of the book is succinct; too much so in our opinion. Numerous divesites are mentioned, however little fine detail is there for the boater. You'll know which sites to ask the diving operations for. The rest of the book covers many of the tourism opportunities in the Keys. An excellent guidebook and supplement for our diving website!

  1. Two days ago we returned from a trip to Florida that we planned around animal encounters and nature experiences for our 9 year old daughter. This book was an invaluable resource in planning our trip. We went to four state parks in Florida's excellent network (as we discovered, it's the only state to twice win the national gold medal for the best state park system). The book had accurate, up-to-date information that helped us get the most out of our visit to Caladesi Island where we saw armadillos cross our hiking trail. On the last day of our trip, we checked out of our motel in Clearwater Beach and visited Hillsborough River State Park northeast of Tampa, following the driving directions in the book. Our one-hour canoe trip along the river was a magical experience, gliding through the primeval greenery of a cypress forest where we saw many turtles and an alligator. In spite of the mind-numbing overdevelopment of the state, nature is still alive and well, and this book is the best guide for anyone who would go looking for the wonders of outdoor Florida.

  1. In the interest of full disclosure, yes, I am the author of this adorable book. So obviously I think it's well written (haha!) but I wanted to comment on its design, since that came as a total surprise. First of all, it's the perfect size--just pop it in a handbag or even the back pocket of your jeans and get going! Secondly the photography is just gorgeous. It really shows off Miami's vibrance. Lastly perhaps its best features are the pop-out, origami-style maps, highlighting all the major spots to visit in the Greater Miami area and Miami Beach.

I hope you enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed writing it. Trust me when I tell you this makes a great gift, too. My girlfriends are mad for it!

  2. This makes a great gift for yourself or any of your girlfriends that are serious about shopping! Gives you the Miami know-how, useful maps, and is in the cutest little package in hot pink! Really nicely put together. LOVE IT!!!

    Shanna (a.k.a. Iris) :)

  1. "Provides information that cannot be obtained elsewhere in one source. This is info that beach guests would like to have."--Stephen P. Leatherman, (aka "Dr. Beach") author of America's Best Beaches

"Florida beachgoers will find this book helpful in discovering their ideal beach. The detailed information here will give tourists and residents alike the chance to see just how many wonderful beaches Florida has."--Holly Ambrose, author of 30 Eco-Trips in Florida

"Mary and Bill Burnham prove that Florida's beaches aren't just about soaking up rays. Revealing secret sweet spots throughout the Sunshine State, they've created the most detailed guide for beachgoers to ever hit the shelves. I'll keep it in my car for reference!"--Sandra Friend, author of Hiker's Guide to the Sunshine State

"The University Press of Florida celebrates the diversity of the state's outstanding beaches in its broad-ranging series Wild Florida with the Complete Florida Beach Guide. Written by the dynamic husband and wife team of Bill and Mary Burnham, [this] is the most definitive work of its type."

  1. not to bad. directions could be better. missing a lot trails. where is the nearest bike shop, store, lodging? maybe I should write a book? .... I am.

    Larry Wolfe

  2. This book is a good beginners guide to mountain biking in Florida. The book is divided into sections of the state which make it easy if you are just looking for a place to ride close to home. Also included is a map of the state with ride location marked on it. There is also another helpful section which lists the trails according to type, for example, beginners, advanced, family, scenic, etc. Each trail has a sketched map layout of the trail along with information on the general location, elevation change, aerobic and technical difficulty, scenery, hazards, services along the way, rescue index, and how to find them.

If you live in Florida, it isn't difficult to find the trails. If you are not a resident, a regular map of Florida and the author's directions should point you in the right direction. To find the trails in the parks, most state parks and trails have maps of the park at the ranger stations. Since the book is about the trails themselves, you will not find information about hotels in the area or where the local bike shop is. However, if the trail is in a park and camping is allowed or, as in the case of the Pinellas Trail, the trail has places to eat, shop, and stay over night along it, the author has noted this.

The only thing we noticed was that the author didn't seem to be from Florida. For example, in a park in our area, he talked about how he biked late at night and regretted doing so. Every Floridian knows better than to brave the bugs & the wildlife at night in a state park on a bike so to us this information was more humorous than helpful:) Otherwise, a good book if you are looking for some ideas on where to ride.

  3. This book covers most of the popular trails in my area (panhandle) with detailed information about each. I especially like the authors descpritions on his personal rides. I do have one complaint however. The author gives general info about rescue and local services, but leaves out specifics like local bike shops, hotels, maybe even restaraunts. It would be nice to have this type of info if you are planning on traveling some distance to one of the listed trails so that you could plan accordingly. Otherwise a great book and an interesting read for early evenings when you can't actually be out on a trail tearing across a single-track.

  4. The problem with the book is that there are not many great mountain bike trails in Florida and the few which are available are spread across the state. If you are a frequent mountain biker with intermediate skills you will get to know about the right trails in the bike shops and online.
