  1. If I could give this book 10 stars I would. The amount of detail and information it has is just amazing. Dave Hunter and his wife, Kathy, have made the trip to Florida much more fun and interesting. You can plan ahead for side trips, rest areas, even what gas stations and restaurants are miles down the road. I had an earlier version, but it is a good idea to update every other year as things change so often along I75. Get this great little book and you will learn things, even if you have driven this route all your life, as I have. If you are planning a trip down to Florida via I75, this should be your first purchase

  2. A few years ago, when we purchased a vacation home in Florida, friends gave us the I-75 Guide as a gift. How helpful it has been for all this time, as we traveled back and forth twice a year ! It came time to pack it for this spring's trip and it was nowhere to be found. When we reached Florida and it still had not revealed itself, we promptly ordered another one, updated for this year. We have found it extremely useful in passing through large cities (such as Atlanta) with minimal frustration and in locating facilites along the way. Knowing where gas stations, restaurants and motels are - exit by exit- makes it so much easier to plan your stops during the day. It has also been quite accurate in notations about natural phenomena along the way (kudzu vines, weeping rocks, deer sightings, etc.) Sightseeing information is also of interest and value. We have maps and guidebooks from other sources, but still like to have this one in addition. Keep up the good work !

  3. This is a great book, it made our return trip from Florida to Michigan just fly by with all of the interesting facts we found along the way. I would definitely recommend this book if you are driving I-75 to Florida.

  4. This guide is the best for anyone traveling along I-70. For all of the families traveling with children, it helps you find great stops. Espesially for anyone heading to Disney, it helps make a more relaxing trip when you know ahead where to stop along the way.

  5. We are leaving for Florida in a week and we have been reading this book in preparation for the trip. Wow, what great information! I was so impressed I bought one for my father who goes to Florida for the winter.

  1. I am an expert on the Great Lakes, and was senior staff for 6 years for Great Lakes United, an international coalition that protects the Great Lakes. I think Dr. Leatherman's book is excellent except one great omission. HE TOTALLY LEAVES OUT THE GREAT LAKES! For those who dont live near them, yes, they have great beaches. The Great Lakes have 3800 miles of shoreline, longer than the entire U.S. Atlantic shoreline. 8-mile long Presque Isle Beach in Pennsylvania is used by millions of people a year. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, near Chicago, is nationally famous. Nottasawaga Beach in Ontario, Toronto's prime summer vacation district, is the longest freshwater beach in the world! NY, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Ontario and Minnesota all have long, clean sandy beaches. And they have something ocean beaches DONT have: they are on freshwater (not salty). The Great Lakes are called the Sweetwater Seas, and they are the largest collection of lakes in the world (and contain 25% of the world's freshwater). If Mr. Leatherman wants to be fair and complete, he will expand his book to include Great Lakes beaches in the future edition.

  2. I won't recommend this book now because I, too, live among the Great Lakes and just visited two or three beautiful beaches yesterday on Lake Michigan. Guess we'll have to write our own book on these gorgeous works of nature! JP

  3. This is a terrible list of recommendation's "Best Beaches in the US". 1. Kaunaoa, Hawaii 2. St Joseph Peninsula State Park, Florida 3. Poipu Beach Park, Hawaii 4. Hanalei Beach, Hawaii 5. Kaanapali, Hawaii 6. Caladesi Island State Park, Florida 7. Fort Desoto Park, Florida 8. Hamoa, Hawaii 9. Cape Florida SRA, Florida 10. Ocracoke Island, North Carolina 11. St George Island State Park, Florida 12. East Hampton Beach, New York 13. Westhampton Beach, New York

    14. Perdido Key SRA, Florida 15. Siesta Beach, Florida 16. Cape Hatteras, North Carolina 17. Hanauma Bay, Hawaii 18. Coast Guard Beach, Massachusetts 19. Carpinteria City Beach, California 20. Long Beach Island, New Jersey

Hanalei Beach, If that beach rates in the top 50 (And it doesn't) I would be surprised. Long Beach Island, New Jersey in the Top 20 Ha, There goes your credibility. I have been to many of your so called best beaches and they are NOT! This is a disservice to those who would plan a vacation based on this lousy group of "BEST BEACHES". I would be greatly disappointed if I thought I was standing on the top #1-20 beach's in the US. I would then plan my escapes outside the US., In search of the perfect Temp.,Water,Sand and Waves "BEACH". From the looks of this list anybody can write a book, I guess you can tell I think the list stinks!

Take my word and find your own Beach Paradise, these guys don't know what the HECK they are talking about! Hawaii at least has the top 10-15 beaches in the US.,If I wrote a book I would put more thought into what I would recomend!

    Mr. Slabbaert

  4. Having shot many of the best beaches in Hawaii, California, Florida, The Bahamas, Virgin Islands and the Caribbean, I have been to most of the beaches on his lists. About half of them deserve the awards, the other half has no reason. For example St. George Island has a brownish beach which turns the greenish water into greenish brown. It's rugged and interesting, but not what you'd imagine a 'best' beach to look like. If you really want to see what the best beaches look and feel like, check out the "Best Beaches" under DVDs here on Amazon.com.

  1. My wife and I bought this book to help plan an upcoming trip to Key West. This book has answered just about every question we've had. It covers restaurants, places to stay, where to rent bikes or cars, beaches, snorkeling, where to park and not to park, and a hundred other topics. Nearly every business entry lists the phone number and web address.

My favorite things about this book: Unlike some destination guides that tend to focus on the upscale restaurants, this guide seems to list everything, including simple sandwich shops. Also, the reviews of the various businesses don't appear to be simple re-hashes of what is printed in their brochures.

Only complaint: It appears that the reviews never seem to mention any negatives about the businesses... one guest house that we had tentatively selected to stay at, based on this book, had so many negative reviews online that we decided not to stay there.

Still, for sheer quantity of useful information, it's hard to imagine a more comprehensive book. (If my overall opinion changes after actually going to Key West, I will update this review.)

  2. We just returned from a trip to the Keys staying in Islamorada. We did lots of Key hopping and lived from this book. Using it for restaurants, where to watch the sunsets, information on fishing, boat ramps, beaches, etc. The only thing the book didn't have that would have been helpful would have been information on pets - laws, pet friendly parks, beaches, etc. Excellent guide.

  1. As you might expect from the title, the bulk of the material in this book is focused on the various theme parks in the Orlando area. In addition, you will find all the standard Fodor's material covering restaurants, hotels, and general information about visiting the area.

The information provided is useful and accurate. Fodor's updates it once a year and subject to constant little changes in the real world, they do a good job of keeping it current. The strategies offered for avoiding long lines at the theme parks are helpful. The book also gives descriptions and ratings of every ride and attraction at each park. The descriptions are almost too detailed (if you want any surprises) and their ratings are sometimes a bit generous. Still, the material is helpful in deciding which rides to make sure you see and what can be skipped if time is short.

All in all, this is an above average guide. It does suffer in comparison to The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2008 (Unofficial Guides), which is the ultimate help in planning a trip to Orlando. The Unofficial Guide is hundreds of pages longer and every bit of it is crammed with useful information. Some travelers are actually put off by the sheer volume of information in the Unofficial Guide and this might be a choice that would be less intimidating and more easily digested if you prefer to invest a bit less time in the planning stage of your trip.

  2. It took me awhile to decide which one of the countless guides to get for my 1st trip to WDW. In my opinion, the Unofficial Guide was way too big to lug around, and the Official Guide was "pretty" but didn't say much more than what was already apparent (or could easily be found online). Fodor's Guide was great for its size (not too big, but not too little that you felt like the info. was sparse). This guide is great for beginners because it tells you all you need to know without overwhelming. The Unofficial Guide might be better for someone who was making a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. trip to WDW and would appreciate the detailed info. The book layout was easy to follow, the readability was high, and it even includes info. on Universal Studios as well!
