  1. TYPICAL FROMMER GUIDEBOOK-EASY TO READ...RECOMMENDS RESTAURANTS AND HOTELS, THEREFORE LISTS ARE INCOMPLETE AS THEY DO NOT REVIEW IN A NEGATIVE MANNER. MAPS ARE VERY CLEAR, AND ATTRACTIONS ARE WELL DESCRIBED. ]

  2. This is very helpful with specific hints for our travel next week. Being practical it really gives a sense of how we can budget our time.

  3. I have always loved the Frommer's Guides and this one is no disappointment. Very useful information, with plenty of listings of restaurants, hotels, and attractions which coem in handy in a guide book. Other guide books do not have nearly as much information. So I highly recommend this one - short & sweet!

  1. "Walking Paris" is an excellent, easy to read, easy to carry book of walks around Paris which combines both obvious tourist high spots with hidden and unspoilt and largely undiscovered Paris. It is full of fascinating background information. It also contains helpful information about good restaurants and cafes on your route."Walking Paris" really adds value and enjoyment to your trip to this fascinating and most beautiful city.

  2. My girlfriend and I did about a third of the walks in this book while visiting Paris at Easter.

Overall, a very good guide that points out both the expected and unexpected sites of interest on the
walk. The maps sometimes have glitches, so on every walk we found ourselves lost at least once.

Some walks were brilliant and informative. Walking Montmartre and the Marais, I learned a lot more about
neighborhoods I'd been in before (previously armed with a Michelin guide). The Latin Quarter walks were
a little less good but still excellent (and in the Latin Quarter, seemed to take us past all the fine bakeries).

Other walks were simply average: the Louvre to Champs Elysee and Ile St Louis. The walks were fine but
nothing in the guide made them feel special. And while I applaud the idea of trying to create a walk
from Trocadero to the Arc de Triomphe, the actual walk was rather boring.

Still, overall, the best walking guide for Paris I've encountered.

  3. If you're only interested in who built a particular building and when and in what style, then you'll love this book. But in my mind, only an architectural history buff would like it. It's just a list of information, few cultural references, nothing interesting, it's very boring.

  4. Having already used the "Walking London" and "Walking Dublin" books, by the same publisher, with great success, we were immediately drawn to the "Walking Paris" book. Instinct guided us correctly. My wife and I just used this book over Easter 2008, and were pleasantly satisfied with the range and commentary of the walks. I have been to Paris 4 times, and each walk we took I learned so much about the history of the streets, homes, and monuments that were on the paths. In five days we were able to enjoy around a dozen walks, and as a man I found the maps very helpful. If you plan ahead you can connect the walks to stretch your time. The book also includes valuable Metro information, historical background of Paris, colorful photos, and practical hints. My wife and I both feel that our days would not have been as exciting/ informational without "Walking Paris".

At the same time we purchased "Paris Walks" by Landis et al. and were quite disappointed. For the information that **is** given the detail is phenomenal, yet for such highlights, i.e. Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur, and the Louvre you will not even find an entry. On the other hand, for a small yet historical restaurant such as Maxim's, you will find over 2 pages of information. This was not our style, but made a good compliment. That is why we think "Walking Paris" is the best.

We will continue to purchase from this publisher for other cities we travel to. You will not be disappointed.

  5. I found this book quite useful. I had it with me on a recent trip to Paris and took three or four of the walks. It's easy to use, accurate, informative and it definitely shows you things you might otherwise miss. On one walk through the Marais, we "discovered" a medieval library I would otherwise just walked straight past.
I suggest taking this book and another one with restaurant and hotel listings. But for people who love Paris and love to walk, this is a good buy. For more on me, and my book The Nazi Hunter: A Novelgo to www.alanelsner.com.

  1. It's probably too much to ask any one book to cover all of England in detail. But Frommer's has packed this 800-page monster with all the information they could in an attempt to do just that. Did they succeed? Mostly. For starters, they offer over 20 "Best of" lists that help you zero in on the finest the country has to offer in all sorts of categories ranging from museums to pubs and everything in between. Basic travel information is offered for those completely new to the country to help you start off on the right track. There's even a short offering to help you learn a bit about art and architecture so that you can better appreciate what you will see on your visit. And, of course, there are four suggested itineraries for complete trips. Finally, the remaining 700 pages detailed information on the various geographic areas of England.

Without diminishing the rest of the book, I found the "Best of" lists and the itineraries a great starting point because it helped me zoom in on the part of England that I would most want to visit. From there, I started worrying about the specifics of what I would do there and that's when the rest of the book started to come in handy. But I also purchased The Unofficial Guide to England (Unofficial Guides) and found that I often went back and forth between the two. For information on the Cotswolds, Lake District, and some other aspects of the trip, I found Frommer's to be the most helpful. At the same time, when it came to reviewing the sight-seeing attractions in London I preferred the content and format that the Unofficial Guide used. It's not that Frommer's didn't cover it at all, or that the coverage was poor. But comparing the two, I definitely found the Unofficial Guide easier to use for touring London. Leaving London aside, Frommer's has certainly put together the most comprehensive guide you will find on England. It has every city you could possibly be interested in as well covering the Lake District, the Cotswolds, and other rustic areas of interest to tourists.

In summary, I found the Frommer's Guide to be highly useful and I certainly recommend it to anyone planning a trip to England. I also believe that no one book will have everything when covering a place as diverse as England, so don't limit yourself to just one book.

  1. I am a reader of the 2nd edition of this book, as I have not got the 3rd edition that , sorry, just give you some comment to the 2nd edition. I believe, however, you can glean how good the 2nd edition is. Firstly, it give some hits of writing a cover, or , what essential information should be given i your cover letter. For instance, you should tell the potential employer whet you are available to attend the intervew. Secondly, What visas/permits would you be necessary to got. Thirdly, after arrival, the first stuff you have to do is how to fight with " Customs Not only those information, it also drops the hints down, say, the issue of accommodation, public transport, insure , etc.. Indeed, I highly recommend this book to whom want to work in the UK.

  2. This is a great resource that encompasses all the concerns that a person would have if considering moving to Britain! The book is well organized and easy to understand.

  3. Very comprehensive book, that helps you better understand what to expect when you move to a new country. Covers a diverse series of themes.

  1. Dr. Jordan writes an excellent introduction to European geography. It is easy to read and understand and chapters are accompanied by lots of self-taken pictures (black and white). It begins with the question of what is Europe and who is European, a very relevant question as the European Union expands. Dr. Jordan lists a dozen empirical characteristics of Europe such as Christian and democratic that isn't universal but serves well as a fundamental description of Europe to a novice.

The best section is on the historical and cultural splits between Northern and Southern Europe, and Western and Eastern Europe. Dr. Jordan details the reasons for the splits; for example, the northerly extent of the Roman Empire and the westerly extent of Islam.

The weakest section is on the European Union which is arguably the most important issue in Europe today and essential for geographers. More detail is needed on what it does and how it works.

I highly recommend it for any geographer, political scientist, or historian interested in Europe but without a lot of background with the region.

  1. What a surprise to find such a wonderful book for hiking in Italy!! I am planning a trip and hope to put this book to good use during my visit. I am sure that the scenery will only be more beautiful than the photos in black and white. Aside from the 50+ different hikes there are also tip's on traveling in Italy. I am sure that this will be a useful tool during my visit.

  2. This is the best hiking book I have ever read. It is very user-friendly. Just about any question I might have has been anticipated. The book is arranged in a very concise orderly fashion. I will recommend it to my hiking friends. I look foward to purchasin books this author may write in the future.

  3. Ecologist, educator, and avid hiker who has traversed thousands of miles Jeff Taylor presents 50 Hikes In & Around Tuscany: Hiking the Mountains, Forests, Coast & Historic Sites of Wild Tuscany and Beyond, a combination hiking and travel guide to Italy's gorgeous Tuscan region. The fifty hikes featured cover Tuscan Hill Country, the mountains of the Alpi Apuane, the Cinque Terre and Ligurian Coast, the Northern and Central Apennines, and much more. Yet 50 Hikes In & Around Tuscany is supplemented with far more than information than simply descriptions, maps, and black-and-white photographs of hiking trails; also covered are the best times to visit, how to drive and travel around Italy, local customs, lodging establishments for overnight hikes, a list of useful English-Italian translations and navigating terms, insights into the region's natural history, flora, and fauna, and much more. Enthusiastically recommended for any hiker planning to visit the Tuscan area.

  4. This will seem odd, but I'm the other Jeff Taylor. There are four or five of us, writing for a living and publishing books and articles.

But I came upon Jeff Taylor's book about Tuscany while looking for articles about hiking in Italy. By coincidence, Tuscany and hiking are two of my own interests, and the fact that the author's name is identical to my own makes this the kind of book that piques my interest. Weirdness to the seventh degree, Rod Serling standing at the crossroads leading to a little town somewhere in Tuscany ...

So when I say I loved this book, and it told me a lot about my life's future mission (to explore Tuscany), there's a certain degree of bias. But even if the author's name were Jones, it would still be THE book I'd buy before buying an airline ticket to Italy.

  5. Bought this book on-line 48 hours before heading to Tuscany, which I and other non-walkers do every 2nd year. Managed to do four of the walks and the descriptions: how to get to start, directions on the walk etc etc were excellent. Really opened up new parts of Tuscany for me. One of the best hillwalking books I have come across.

  1. This guide is as practical and useful as Bingham's German Survival Guide. While the vocabulary lessons are helpful, the culture notes are priceless. This is a great introduction to both the Italian language and to Italy and the length is just right so that the traveler with little time to prep should not be overwhelmed.

  2. Bingham's book Italian Survival Guide is a must-have resource to pack in your travel bag for Italy! This book is practical; including pronunciation guides for many of the common phrases used to interact with native Italians. I particularly appreciated the Culture Note sections interspersed through the book. I visited Rome and Florence last year, and found these sections accurate and insightful--a big help to the traveler who does not want to look like a tourist!

This book is invaluable and I plan to have a copy stuffed in my handbag when I return to Italy in 2009!

  3. I read the cultural insights on Italy first. They are great! The practical hints are superb. Even though I speak Italian, I will take this book with me when I go to Italy.

  4. Elizabeth Bingham's Italian Survival Guide is clear and concise in its presentation of the most important information a traveler needs to use while traveling in Italy. The guide is organized well; therefore, finding the information one wants is not difficult. The pronunciation guide is invaluable. The book itself is not so big that a person gets lost in it when trying to find a specific piece of information. The cultural notes are short and to the point, so that one can read them quickly and gain important information about interacting with the people of Italy. I would be apt to photocopy the information on the inside front and back covers to carry along on daily excursions. Overall, this guide would be extremely helpful to take on a trip to Italy!

  5. I have bought just about every book on Italy and this is one of the best! It has great tips and information! Unlike other books, I find this information to be truthful! I lived in Italy and now take students on exchanges every year. This book has really helped them! I think it's a must! :-)
