  1. A perfectly nice book, which should have been a good deal larger, but is currently being sold at 20 per cent off at Borders. Further, the editor, Stan Patey, has already put out a better book in 1996: The Coast of New England: A Pictorial Tour.

  1. You will no longer have any excuse for being bored on a rainy day (or a sunny day either!) I recently took my 5 year old to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island without first checking to see what information this book offered. BAD MOVE! My son was tired of waiting on the long lines, bored with static exhibits, hungry, hot, etc. If I had checked with New York's 50 Best Places to Take Children I would have found out that there is a 90 minute tour boat that goes past the Statue of Liberty. My son would have seen the statue without the long, tiring lines to wait on just to go to the top of the pedestal (we weren't early enough to go to the crown). Mr. Ishac has captured the best attractions the big apple has to offer a child from the kid's point of view. The book is small enough to carry in a pocket while acting like a tourist; even if you have lived in NY all of your life like I have. Included in the featured attractions are the usual favorites such as the American Museum of Natural History and the Empire State building plus some unusual and obscure spots such as the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. Now I just have to try and find the time to visit all of these great places.

  2. I (like many) have been to NYC many, many times. But, going with children is a whole new experience. This book is helpful because it mentions things many visitors wouldn't know (Did you know there was a monorail in the Bronx zoo?). Great book!

  3. This book is pretty helpful for those weekend 'what do you feel like doing' moments. I have lived in NY my whole life, (30 years) and had never been to the (mini) zoo in Queens. It lists some pretty cool places to go and see, with accurate and updated descriptions. If you have kids, and live in NY, you need this book.

  4. This book represents a rare combination of keen insight, brilliantly clever writing, and effective layout. As you can tell, I really liked it. We had a much better NYC vacation with our children because of this book!

  5. There are SO many great things to do in New York City with kids that this book should have been a breeze for its authors. The suggestions are all "OK". But there is very little that is insightful, and it lacks real excitement and interest.

Perhaps its too hard for a print publication to keep current, and readers would be better off going on the web and looking at Time Out New York Kids.

    I was disappointed.

  1. This is the best guide available for walking tours of the cultural attractions of the Big Apple. I've used this and earlier versions of this book off and on for 25 years, both when I lived in New York and subsequently. The ratings of New York's major and minor sites from one to three stars are spot on, just as the Michelin Green Guides for London and Paris are. Useful both for the tourist with a few days to spend in New York as well as the resident New Yorker who needs to haul visitors around town to those attractions usually disdained by natives.

  2. I was on one of those tv show/ movie tours in NYC recently and the tour guide had the most interesting stories to tell about the city. After the tour was over, I asked her to please tell me where she got all of her information. She explained to me that the NYC government requires that tour guides pass a test to get a tour guide license. In order to pass that test, they recommend that you study the Michelin NYC Green Guide. I wanted to make sure, so I called the licensing division and asked them what I needed to do to prepare for the exam - sure enough, they said to get the Michelin Green Guide NYC!! This travel guide has to be good!

  3. makes NYC manageable for the tourist.

maps are much better than those found in other guides.

  1. In the tradition of old-time Yankee yarn-spinners, Citro delivers something that's all too rare nowadays--a darn good story. Dozens of them, in fact. I got so wrapped up in the tale called "The House of the Feasting Dead" that I nearly went past my subway stop. This is a hair-raising tour "dark" side of Vermont, a place populated by ghosts, mystics, spiritualists and even a "stone-throwing devil."

  2. Joseph Citro's collections of Vermont folklore have become as much a part of the Green Mountain State as sugaring and the Lake Champlain Monster. GREEN MOUNTAINS, DARK TALES continues this series of terrificly readable and enjoyable stories based on Vermont folklore and legend. Anyone who likes the state or just likes a good story would do well to pick up this book. It makes for addictive reading.

  3. Yet again, I have been enthralled, scared and drawn in by Mr. Citro's tales about my home state. He even covered my home-town ghost in this installment, which thrilled me to no end. He is truly one of our master storytellers, and I highly recommend all of his work.

  4. I loved this book! I live on the NY/VT border, so I spend a lot of time in southern Vermont, and it was so great to be reading about places that I have been to. It's really interesting to have a mental image of a place because you've been there, and then you learn that this place has a much darker past than you ever could have imagined, and the picture changes, but your interest increases. It's really cool. Citro's books are some of my favorites. He's a great author - I love his writing style.

  5. While not as full or well-founded as his earlier books (more a collection of snippets), this book is another excellent collection, rewritten with incredible prose, of bizarre tales (some bordering on folklore) from Vermont's green hills. He paints a fascinating portrait of our magical land, as well as our people. Grade: A-
