5 comments about Dog-Friendly New England: A Traveler's Companion, Second Edition (Dog Friendly).
- This is a great book, we have dogs and love to travel. This book gives us a wonderful list of places to stay and other information.
Thank you,
Jane
- We took our two dogs to Canada and used this to navigate the northeast. Highly highly recommended.
- Dog-Friendly New England is a well-organized travel guide for those of us who can't think of travelling without our dog. The book is organized by region,
and each region is rated for its "dog-friendliness."
This book is fun to read when you're just trying to plan a New England trip.
It offers just the right amount of information, with capsule reviews of lodging establishments, restaurants, and attractions. You can probably plan your whole trip to New England based on the recommendations in this book.
- My wife and I wanted to travel with our Newfoundland dog. No small feat! I read the reviews of this book and decided to try it for myself. I have just returned from 8 days in Kennebunk, Kittery, Bar Harbr ME and Newport RI. The suggested places to stay were teriffic. Clean, roomy enough and very very hospitable. The places to eat and go were also uniformly great! While these were not 5 star resorts, the owners get 5 stars for opening their places to a gateful family! GET THIS BOOK!
- I purchased this volume, unread, as a gift. Therefore, I cannot offer first-hand testimony (hence, my four stars). The recipient, however, vouches for its accuracy and usefulness.

4 comments about The Most Beautiful Villages of New England (Most Beautiful Villages).
- Wonderful photagraphs and great images of beautiful New England! Reminiscent of my childhood, and old fashioned villages of yesterday. A must for the coffee table!
- I'm a big fan of quality photography. This is a great book with terrific pictures of new england, and all the good reasons to move here.
- I love books that have high quality photography, this is a magnificent book on new england towns.
- I took this coffee-table photo book out of the library once I realized that one of the featured "most beautiful villages" in New England was Stonington, Maine -- where I lived for nearly seven years. I wanted to see what they chose to show about the Deer Isle area because hey, *I* knew what made the area so gorgeous. If they could capture Stonington, perhaps they could also bring to life the beauty of the other villages covered -- from Essex, CT to Grafton, VT to Nantucket, MA.
To my disappointment, though, the photographers chose rather humdrum locations to highlight. Nothing here is _bad_, mind you. The photos are perfectly nice. There's plenty of predictable photos of clapboard buildings and small town churches and autumn leaves. But it's the predictability that makes this worth flipping through once... and only once. It's as though you had purchased large-format postcards from the ordinary gift shoppe -- not captured something unique and beautiful.
I'm a little astonished that this book has so many pictures of the (admittedly beautiful) autumn leaves in New England (that is, they're beautiful if they don't make you think "Oh geez we'd better top off the heating oil"). But not a single picture of the mountain lupine blooming in the spring that, in my opinion, is far prettier. You'll see several inoffensive photos of boats tied up at the dock at sunset... but almost nothing that reflects the sense of community that can make small-town living so precious.
I'd hoped that this book would bring back a tiny bit of my years on Deer Isle. Alas... I'll have to dig out my own photos for that.

4 comments about Dishing Up Vermont: 145 Authentic Recipes from the Green Mountain State.
- "Dishing Up Vermont" is a welcome addition to anyone's kitchen and cookbook library. For the master chef, novice, and everyone in between who may be interested in great whole food recipes created, flavored, and colored by nature, "Dishing Up Vermont" is a long awaited culinary dream. The wide selection of products used in these recipes not only include natural, healthy, and heart smart ingredients and preparation methods, but also emphasize sustainable farming practices, conservation, and fair trade markets which strengthen communities and the health of the overall land and environment. "Dishing Up Vermont" takes the reader through an exciting and delicious journey through the state of Vermont to eat at some of the finest restaurants, inns, and lodges while meeting some of the most exceptional chefs in the world...all in the comfort of your own kitchen. "Dishing Up Vermont" is an excellent cookbook that is unique in its mission and one that my family and friends will enjoy and recommend to others for many years to come. Kudos to its author!
- Dishing Up Vermont is a wonderful new cookbook that combines the best recipes and ingredients from the Green Mountain State. It introduces the reader to a wealth of ingredients and products that give the cook an insider's view of Vermont's best. This cookbook demonstrates the important bond between farmers, chefs and consumers, while stressing the importance of the sustainable farming movement as well as buying local. The book contains beautiful photographs of Vermont and its products which add an extra touch to this delightful collection of recipes. This is a must have cookbook for anyone's library, whether you be a Vermonter, or a visitor to the state. Hats off to the author for giving us a cookbook which we will have in our library for many years to come.
- You don't have to live in Vermont to love this cookbook. We live in Pennsylvania, and can get many of the same ingredients from our local farmer's market. This cookbook is for anyone who enjoys good food and knows the value of sustainable farming. Knowing the importance of buying locally produced foods, I found this cookbook to be a practical addition to my pantry. The recipes are easy to follow, yet taste like they were prepared by a gourmet chef. I particularly enjoyed the recipes for Blueberry Stuffed French Toast and Apple Covered Cheesecake. If you've ever been to Vermont, reading this will make you want to go back. The author does a wonderful job highlighting many of the Inns and Farms that make Vermont unique.
- Dishing Up Vermont: 145 Authentic Recipes from the Green Mountain State is a compilation that unquestionably lives up to its title. Food writer and Tracey Medeiros, whose recipes have formerly appeared in "Bon Appetit", "Cooking Light", "Eating Well", and "Hampton Roads", offers easy-to-follow instructions for preparing tasty delights such as "Vermont-Style Hush Puppies", "Grilled Marinated Venison Loin", "Grilled Maple-marinated Portobello Mushrooms", "Butternut Squash Ravioli with Apples and Pears", and much more. Full-color photography and an assortment of Vermont food and eatery anecdotes round out this wonderful culinary tour de force.

2 comments about The Adirondack Book: Great Destinations: A Complete Guide, Including Saratoga Springs, Sixth Edition (Great Destinations).
- I was considering a trip to the Adirondacks & was using this book to see if it would be a good place to go. The organization of the book is different from most travel books. Instead of dividing the chapters into regions of the Adirondacks, it is divided into recreation, lodging, etc. Then in each chapter it tells you about lodging, for example, for each region. As a result, it was good to use to decide whether the trip would be worthwhile but seems difficult to use in deciding what area to stay & where different things exist, without taking notes. On the plus side it seems very detailed.
- The Adirondack Book (6th) is packed with information on lodging, eateries, activities, events, etc. However, I was a bit unhappy with the presentation of this information -- the description of lodgings and activities were almost just listings, with little review, critique, or guidance. Admittedly, it is hard to describe places for every taste, but in my view only a very brief section at the end came close to providing much guidance.
Also, a note: if you are expecting this to have any information on specific trails to hike, look elsewhere. The authors redirect the reader to other guides, such as those published by the Adirondack Mountain Club.
In summary, if it is helpful to you to have a listing of possible places to stay or eat on your travels, consider buying this book. Otherwise, you might do just as well elsewhere or by relying on search engines to plan your trip.

2 comments about AMC's Best Day Hikes Near Boston: Four-Season Guide to 50 of the Best Trails in Eastern Massachusetts (Amc Nature Walks Series).
- Great book. The AMC guides are so thorough, but this is thorough and readable. Enjoy New England with this book.
- This is one of my favorite hiking guides for the Boston area -- varied hikes, easy maps, mostly accurate. Crane Beach and Halibut Point are two of the prettiest places in New England & shouldn't be missed.

3 comments about New Hampshire Atlas and Gazetteer : Topographic Maps of the.
- This atlas is fabulous for driving around the back roads of New Hampshire. It has the names and route numbers of every single road in the entire state, even dirt roads, even indicates which is which. It is not very helpful for roads in cities or large towns, showing only the main ones. But in addition to that it lists canoe trips, state parks, every single private campground in the state, tons of hiking trails (in detail), national forests, snowmobile trails, downhill and cross-country skiing centers, some biking trails, fishing spots (in great detail), museums, historic sites, natural features, the arts, golf courses, covered bridges. Absolutely essential for exploring New Hampshire.
- I highly recommend this atlas book. It has large maps, easy to use symbols, it loaded with colors and highly useful and interesting information. This atlas depicts all roads both big and small and tons of other useful information. It's nice to to look at different areas and discover new routes and attractions. I'm going leave this one in the car for all around reference and driving assistance when in a pinch.
- I always buy a Gazatteer when going hiking in a new state. The New Hampshire version is as helpful as the other states that I have. I like the trail detail and the elevation markings.

5 comments about Weird New England (Weird).
- This book is generally a fun and quirky read, as long as it's not taken TOO seriously. This book reminds us that there remains an abundant number of odd and quirky tales of people, places, events and downright weird things in New England that add to the region's character. Weird New England is a book you can pick up and flip through when the everyday world gets too depressing and overbearing.
The book is not without its fault and some of the errors can be downright annoying to the knowledgeable New Englander. First, there are misspellings of town names, for example the book mentions "Abingdon, MA", which does not exist, but there is an Abington. Some of the "unexplained" structures or buildings described in the book have in fact been well-explained, but again no one should take this book as a serious reference. One serious error does need to be addressed regarding what ancient Greeks and others termed the "music of the spheres". The books states that the term referred to mysterious musical sounds while in fact the ancient scholars where referring to the orderly movement of the sun, moon and planets in what they believed where fixed spheres.
- This is an excellent edition in the Weird series, mainly due to the author's enthusiasm for the subject. He tackles a sprawling amount of New England history and folklore, and will definitely give you a ton of travel ideas for your next road trip. My only complaint is that Citro hails from Vermont and devotes too many pages to it over other states - here's hoping Volume 2 is in the works! I bought this volume along with Weird New York (by a different author) and can say this is significantly better.
- Weird New England (Weird) Very interesting book! Being from New England, I had to have it!
- I was very pleased with the delivery of this book. It arrived in really good condition. An excellent book!
- Got this as gift, not sure I would have bought it on my own. Was a fun if not weird read. Some of the tales I had heard myself many years ago unfortunately they did not add much closure to what I already knew. Not for kids, I'll be keeping it away from my younger ones till they hit 12-13 or so. Still worth a look to relax and daydream a bit.
