  1. My job in the small boat industry requires that I travel to various places on or near the water. As a rabid angler and fish watcher I can't bear the thought of being anyplace where new, different or quality fish might be caught or observed without taking a crack at them. On these trips my time is limited so I have to plan my outings carefully. As a result I've acquired a small library of regional fishing guides to study before each trip in order to pursue my piscatorial passions most efficiently. Luckily, I'm required to visit the state of Maine on a frequent basis. Fortunately, I discovered Fishing Maine, 2nd Ed. by Tom Seymour. This is the most complete and most intelligently written regional guide I've ever seen. If you follow Seymour's advice regarding locations, tackle, technique and seasons you are almost certain to catch plenty of fish. His recommendations for each site are very specific and accurate. Everything about this book is superior, from the writing style, illustrations, choice of type, to the paperstock. Seymour and Lyons Press should be very proud of what they've produced. I often find myself thumbing through this book and wishing for an excuse to visit Maine so that I can check out more fishing sites, firsthand.

  1. This book offers little more than a condensed version of their regular guide book and doesn't add any new kid specific suggestions.

  1. Paul Salter has done a great job in putting this book together. The only reason someone will be disappointed with it is because the person will not have read the title carefully before buying it. It is essentially a guide for Land's End to John O'Groats riders (End-to-End) and not a book about cycling every popular route in Britain. The book has information on everything that a person could ask for. It takes the cyclists through 22 destinations (including Land's End and John O'Groats) and for each, Paul has listed down campsites, B&Bs, Hostels and bike shops. The routes and distances between destinations are clearly marked on very detailed maps, and the altitude profile of each leg is provided with names of villages/towns clearly marked along the profile. He provides a rich commentary of the sites to see along each leg of the trip and also a short history of Britain. This makes it an interesting read. The book has a detailed section on preparing for the trip and other essential information about getting ready to ride in Britain. A must buy!!!

  1. This little gem is well worth the price. The book contains many off-the-beaten path trips.

  1. This book is very nicely done, both in content and in execution. The list of sites are very comprehensive and include states and locations which many Americans may not associate with the American Revolution, such as Maine and Tennessee. They could have done more with the Gulf Coast (the war was also waged in Florida, Alabama and Louisiana in and around the modern cities of Pensecola, Mobile, and Baton Rouge), but the fact they did as much as they have is to their credit. The only other flaw I saw was that while they provided web addresses for many sites, there are several who do not have their URLs listed, although they have sites of their own.

If you're looking for a complete list of Revolutionary War sites all over the Eastern United States, this book is about as close as you will come to finding it. The lay out is very attractive and easy to read and there are a great deal of full color photos associated with many of the sites.

  2. With this book in hand, look up the state you're visiting and you won't miss any important Revolution sites. Having made pilgrimages to Boston, Philidelphia and Annapolis before I had this book, I can attest that as far as I know it left no major site unmentioned when I sampled the sections on these essential Revolution cities, and included many sites in more obscure locations one might otherwise miss. Great and abundant pictures make this a fine collectible for Revolution enthusiasts who have visited the sites as well as those who are unable but would like visuals.

  1. What I love about this book--and I do love it--is that it's like having an incredibly cool friend. A cool friend who's done a huge amount of legwork to find a ton of restaurants and stores that pass her coolness test and then taken beautiful pictures of them and written about them in a really organized and useful way. It's not trying to be Michelin or Frommers or some stuffy authoritative guide. Like any cool person it's got it's own point of view, which is honest and interesting and full of new ideas. In five minutes with this book I found as many interesting new places as I've found in the last few years living in Rhode Island, and so far there hasn't been a dud among them.

  2. This book is a revelation. We moved to RI because we suspected there was a vibrant, fun civilization humming away under veneer of Cardi's and I-95....this book confirms our suspicions! The shops and restaurants in it are delightful, fun-- and the writing, which is amusing, does give you a distinct impression of things. We have tried four new restaurants and they were all top-notch; I can't afford to visit too many of the shops, because the 2 guide-approved ones I've tried triggered shopaholism. Great book.

  3. This is a very insightful book that goes beyond the usual Providence 'Bling' restaurants and uncovers some great local flavor. Oak, for example, is probably my favorite restaurant--not only in Providence, but maybe in the whole world--and the author clearly recognizes its quality. Chef John Cully's inventiveness and hospitality also comes through loud and clear. Bravo!

  4. I very rarely send a book back, but I did this one. It should have been called "Restaurants in Providence", as that is what most of the book seemed to cover. I have lived in Tiverton and Little Compton for twenty years, and found nothing that I did not already know. It certainly did not cover the state comprehensively.
