  1. This guide was perfect for my short trip to Martha's Vineyard. Leave it to Frommer's to offer a pocket-sized guide that still offers everything the full sized guidebook has.

  2. This is a great little guide for Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. It has all the essentials (eating, sleeping, travels), but also has those little insights about when and where and why. It is small in size (not like some other "small" books that are three inches thick), easy to read, and certain to be useful.

  1. It's not often that real authors (Bill McKibben and Sue Halpern) get in the outdoor guidebook business. This bike book is a winner.

  1. This book is okay, but it could be much better. The maps are skimpy and the practical information rather limited. Too many pages are devoted to the obscure history of each island, not enough on bike rentals, shopping opportunities, etc.

  2. The book introduces 15 of Maine's islands. It covers the geography, history, culture and how to get there. The book helps you know what to take with you (stout walking shoes, rain gear, sweater, sunglasses).
Some islands may take a fifteen minute ferry ride, but Martinicus takes over two hours, but all fifteen islands are accessible by ferry. Here are the ones included in the book:
    The Isles of Shoals
    Casco Bay Isles
    Long Island
    Great Chebeague
    Peaks Island
    Muscongus Bay
    Monhegan
    Penobscot Bay
    Matinicus
    The Fox Islands
    Vinalhaven
    North Haven
    West Penobscot Bay
    Islesboro
    East Penobscot Bay
    Isle au Haut
    Deer Isle
    Jericho Bay
    Swans Island
    Gulf of Maine
    Frenchboro (Long Island)
    The Cranberry Isles
The book ends with info on environmental programs and vacations on Maine islands.
We tried a trip to Chebeague on the mail ferry. What a treat to be out in the harbor with the sailboats, and lobster fisherman around us. The craggy islands, the blue of the sea and sky, and lobster buoys adding color to the seascape... sheer delight. The island itself was beautiful and our seafood lunch at a clam shack was delish!

  1. I have many travel books for London but I have to say this is the best. Updated frequently, it contains a vast amount of information. I found the book to be very acurate with opening times and ticket prices for events, as well as travel directions. If you have never been to London before, you will appreciate the back section of the book which covers the basics (using a payphone, the different coins and notes, airport and train iformation etc). Even though I know London very well now, I still find the book very useful when planning a day out. The photography is amazing as well! This is a must have!

  2. We only spent a few days in London but this book helped us to plan which sights we'd have time to see. It also has a great map of the tube which helped us, more than once, find our way around Central London. A Must Have!

  3. From Lonely Planet to the Rough Guides, location-specific guidebooks generally seem so transient since a purchase generally depends upon an upcoming trip and soon afterward ends up in a storage box collecting dust or on craigslist for sale. That's not to say they don't have valuable information when you need them, but there is no incentive to return to the book once the trip has ended. The one exception to the rule is the series of Dorling Kindersley's Eyewitness Travel Guides. The London guide is as good as any in the series as it presents a graphically pleasing, intuitively organized guidebook with detailed pictorials that show animated aerial shots of neighborhoods like Covent Garden or cut-away floor plans of heavily visited buildings like Westminster Abbey or the Tate. It also helps make geographic sense of neighborhoods that allow you to navigate easily through them by pointing out recommended sights.

The first part of the book presents a timeline history of London that is both interesting and useful, as events are cross-referenced to sights you would want to see there. There is a well-presented survival guide toward the end of the book that highlights important travel information as well as recommendations on where to stay, shop and eat. Moreover, there is a comprehensive street finder of central London which helps you navigate without the inconvenience of fold-out maps. All the information is contained within a user-friendly, laminated paperback format that slips easily into backpacks and holds up well against inclement weather (a particular plus in rainy London). For all its obvious benefits, the one that has the most resonance to me is the fact that the book makes a fine keepsake of the trip afterward given its colorfully glossy quality. Even though the price is on the higher end of such guides, it is well worth it for its lasting value after your trip.

  4. simple the best and not to miss for a visit in London, you don't have to take photo's they are already in the book

  5. Although it could function as a take-along guidebook for the vacationer, I think other guides are better for that purpose. What this Eyewitness book does do very well is make you want to go see the places it shows in beautiful pictures and stirringly descriptive text. I love these books, own most of them that have been released, and have referred to this and other titles in the series over and again to see the famous places I've wanted to visit. Helpful, fun, a nice read, less practical than other selections on the market.

  1. "Longstreet Highroad Guide to the Vermont Mountains" is an excellent resource for both Vermont mountain enthusiasts and Vermont residents who want to learn more about their beautiful state.

Nancy Bazilchuk and Rick Strimbeck provide more than 50 helpful and original maps, as well as detailed trail descriptions and extensive info on the natural history, geology, flora, and fauna of hundreds of gorgeous mountain sites.

The authors point out a multitude of terrific features, ranging from the Stowe Recreation Path (for cyclists, runners, walkers, and cross-country skiers) that has "glorious views of Mount Mansfield" to Breadloaf Wilderness--in Central Vermont--where "roads are nearly invisible, and the pale green pastels of pastureland melt into the rich emeralds of hilltop forests."

Dates, fees, facilities, and closest towns are a few of the many other items listed in this marvelous guide.

  2. This is simply the best Vermont guidebook for the hiker, outdoorsperson, and vacationer. It is organized by small geographical sections of the state and it covers each section thoroughly, providing clear driving directions to each site. It is well organized and carefully researched. I found it very helpful and so much easier than dealing with maps.
