1 comments about It Happened in New Jersey (It Happened In Series).
- I really enjoyed reading this book. It was informative and gave a lot of interesting facts of folklore and history of the State of New Jersey, from it's discovery and early settlement right up to modern times. A good read for youngsters and oldsters alike, especially for young Jerseyites who can go out first hand and visit some of the places and historical sites. It will engender a love of history and a pride for those who live in this State.
I recommend it for all ages!

3 comments about 50 Hikes in the White Mountains: Hikes and Backpacking Trips in the High Peaks Region of New Hampshire, Sixth Edition.
- This book is a font of information -- everything you need to know about hiking in New Hampshire! The hiking trails have been well-researched, and the author evaluates the difficulty of each trail. Makes a great gift for the adventurer in your family!
- Living in California, I don't get a chance to hike in New Hampshire as often as I would like. But when I do, I always take this lightweight guide along in my car and in the pack. The best part about the guide is that hikes are described in detail and directions to each trailhead are given in exhaustive detail. This is especially important for out-of-towners who aren't familiar with the back country roads. The authors have hiked each of the trails and they offer pithy comments on trail conditions, the possibility of seeing wildlife and other pertinent information.
There is a separate section on the magnificent Cosos Trail, the 200+ mile hike which runs from the border of NH to he Canadian border. My one slight criticism is the maps, which could be of better quality, but the text, route descriptions and ancillary material are of high quality. The descriptions of day hikes around Pinkham Notch are excellent!
- I used this book last weekend. The trail descriptions are very easy to follow, and the introductory write-ups make it easy to select appropriate trails for your skill/desired effort level.

3 comments about Winter Trails Vermont and New Hampshire, 2nd: The Best Cross-Country Ski & Showshoe Trails.
- Yes! This book is very unique in that is written for a few, specific winter activities (x-country skiing or snowshoeing) in a few very specific locations (New Hampshire and Vermont). If you are in the market for such a book, you don't have many choices to begin with. You'll be happy to know that this book does its subject justice.
People in the Northeast will truly enjoy this book as it covers the best winter activity locations primarily in both the Green and White mountains but also in a few other various locations in each state (including Southern New Hampshire and Vermont). The guide includes point-to-point trail directions, specific maps, driving directions, facility information, and the usual historical fun facts that always fill hiking books. I grew up in New Hampshire and now live in Vermont. To find this book that covers both of my outdoor winter playgrounds was a true find. If you are a big outdoorsy person looking for a guide to places to help you with winter activities, this book by Marty Basch will be a welcome addition to your library or backpack.

- A very well written book with lots of detail on how to get to a trail, description/map of the trail, whether it is suitable for snowshoeing or X-country skiing or both, as well as a few bits of trivia and suggestions for a good place to eat after a days outing to replenish. I only wish the book were 5 times bigger to cover more trails.

1 comments about Fishing Maine, 2nd: An Angler's Guide to More than 80 Fresh- and Saltwater Fishing Spots (Regional Fishing Series).
- My job in the small boat industry requires that I travel to various places on or near the water. As a rabid angler and fish watcher I can't bear the thought of being anyplace where new, different or quality fish might be caught or observed without taking a crack at them. On these trips my time is limited so I have to plan my outings carefully. As a result I've acquired a small library of regional fishing guides to study before each trip in order to pursue my piscatorial passions most efficiently. Luckily, I'm required to visit the state of Maine on a frequent basis. Fortunately, I discovered Fishing Maine, 2nd Ed. by Tom Seymour. This is the most complete and most intelligently written regional guide I've ever seen. If you follow Seymour's advice regarding locations, tackle, technique and seasons you are almost certain to catch plenty of fish. His recommendations for each site are very specific and accurate. Everything about this book is superior, from the writing style, illustrations, choice of type, to the paperstock. Seymour and Lyons Press should be very proud of what they've produced. I often find myself thumbing through this book and wishing for an excuse to visit Maine so that I can check out more fishing sites, firsthand.

2 comments about Enjoying Maine's Islands.
- This book is okay, but it could be much better. The maps are skimpy and the practical information rather limited. Too many pages are devoted to the obscure history of each island, not enough on bike rentals, shopping opportunities, etc.
- The book introduces 15 of Maine's islands. It covers the geography, history, culture and how to get there. The book helps you know what to take with you (stout walking shoes, rain gear, sweater, sunglasses).
Some islands may take a fifteen minute ferry ride, but Martinicus takes over two hours, but all fifteen islands are accessible by ferry. Here are the ones included in the book:
The Isles of Shoals
Casco Bay Isles
Long Island
Great Chebeague
Peaks Island
Muscongus Bay
Monhegan
Penobscot Bay
Matinicus
The Fox Islands
Vinalhaven
North Haven
West Penobscot Bay
Islesboro
East Penobscot Bay
Isle au Haut
Deer Isle
Jericho Bay
Swans Island
Gulf of Maine
Frenchboro (Long Island)
The Cranberry Isles
The book ends with info on environmental programs and vacations on Maine islands.
We tried a trip to Chebeague on the mail ferry. What a treat to be out in the harbor with the sailboats, and lobster fisherman around us. The craggy islands, the blue of the sea and sky, and lobster buoys adding color to the seascape... sheer delight. The island itself was beautiful and our seafood lunch at a clam shack was delish!
