3 comments about Hiking New Hampshire, 2nd (State Hiking Series).
- This is a fine book, with much to offer the novice and dedicated hiker alike. Pletcher's work offers guidance for hiking throughout the state of NH. He has somehow managed to narrow his analysis to 100 fine hikes, which promise adventure into all levels of hiking. While it in no way matches the depth of pure trail knowledge one finds in the AMC guide, it instead offers unique, intimate and eloquent analysis of 100 hikes. Each hike is highlighted with its own map, as well as a chart to graph elevation gains. Also, each trail's difficulty and length are assessed and special attractions unique to the hike are noted. Pletcher is clearly proficient in his knowledge of these trails and, more importantly, adept at putting that knowledge into compact summaries for the benefit of would-be hikers. A must addition to one's hiking library. Ernest M. Berube
- Living in California, I don't get a chance to hike in New Hampshire as often as I would like. But when I do, I always take this lightweight guide along in my car and in the pack. The best part about the guide is that hikes are described in detail and directions to each trailhead are given in exhaustive detail. This is especially important for out-of-towners who aren't familiar with the back country roads. The authors have hiked each of the trails and they offer pithy comments on trail conditions, the possibility of seeing wildlife and other pertinent information.
There is a separate section on the magnificent Cohos Trail, the 200+ mile hike which runs the length of the state. My one slight criticism is the photos, which could be of better quality, but the text, route descriptions and ancillary material are of high quality.
- The author's descriptions of the hikes and directions to the trailheads are very good. He also has done a good job narrowing down New Hampshire's many hikes to the 100 best but you need to supplement the book with a topographical map. A few times, distances were inaccurate and the elevation changes are misleading. Also, the photos could be better.

1 comments about Walks & Rambles on Cape Cod and the Islands: A Naturalist's Hiking Guide (Walks & Rambles on Cape Cod and the Islands).
- Hiking enthusiasts visiting Cape Cod will definitely want to take this book along. On my last trip to the Cape I sampled several of the hikes in this volume and found them all to be wonderful. The book's detailed descriptions and clear maps of dozens of hikes of varying length and character make it easy to find the kind of places you want and navigate them easily. Don't leave home without it!

2 comments about Edge of Maine (Directions).
- I sent this to a sick friend in Maine. She loved it, her husband loved it, and now they are sharing it with others, but only with the promise they will get it back.I will have to get on the list to borrow it.
- Mr. Wolff does a wonderful job of describing certain historical snapshots and present-day cultural aspects of coastal Maine. His description of being lost at sea in a horribly thick Maine fog is worth the book itself. Mr. Wolff does not attempt to depict all facets of my home state, but does a commendable job in his usual eloquent manner. In this brief work, he made me laugh, reflect and ultimately, reaffirm the true beauty of Maine and why I'll always live here. Do yourself a favor and read this pleasant and realistic tribute.

5 comments about Daytrips London: 55 One Day Adventures by Rail or Car, In and Around London and Southern England (Daytrips London).
- This book is invaluable for planning train daytrips outside London or walking daytrips within London. Although I've explored London many times, I enjoyed having new routes I could follow that gave highlights along the way. I don't quite understand why the earlier reviewer would expect information regarding accommodations - this is a book offering sugestions for DAYTRIPS - it is not a general travel book.
- I totally agree with 'A Gem' - I bought this book over the Internet and found it descriptive, informative and the only book you need when taking Daytrips in and around London. Author keep up the good work! I would recommend the whole of the Daytrips series to anyone.
- My husband and I traveled to London for a week and this was the only guide I took. It's the only one you'll need-- seriously. Whether you're there for a week or a month-- it's fantastic. It outlines manageable walking trips-- so you can choose to see what you want and skip what you want, without backtracking. It notes the best food in the area of the walking tour and offers really cool information about the sights in London, Bath, Rye, Dover, Stratford-Upon-Avon and many more! I cannot say enough good things about the book. It made us comfortable with public transportation (offering the best train routes to take to get where you're going). Just be aware that the prices for items and admission are not dead-on. They're close though!
- Great book for looking into various day trips from London. Definitely would recommend this book!
- I used the seventh edition of "Daytrips London" on my English trip earlier this summer, just as I used an earlier edition on my trip ten years ago. Not once did this book ever steer me wrong. Earl Steinbicker has done a wonderful job in staking out the most beautiful walks and the most fascinating points of interest, both obvious and not-so-obvious. If it weren't for Steinbicker, my sister and I would never have known about the walk from the train station in Salisbury, across the River Nadder and down a beautiful footpath, with a sheep meadow to our right and breathtaking views of Salisbury Cathedral to our left, to a lovely 14th-century mill turned inn. We ate delicious food and watched children and dogs play on the banks of the river. At one point local farmers drove their pony traps into the water. It was a privileged glimpse into English village life as it has existed for centuries, and we saw it only because "Daytrips London" told us it was there. I can also vouch for the excellence of Steinbicker's tips on Cambridge, Canterbury, Rye and Hampton Court. If you plan to make a walking tour of English towns, I urge you to take "Daytrips London" with you.

2 comments about Best Hikes With Children in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island (Best Hikes With Children Series).
- The series is a must-have for hiking with children. I use the CT-MA-RI book to scope out which trails would be good for hiking with my 5 year old son. We have done about 8 of the 79 so far. Each one had accurate descriptions and good indicators for difficulty. Highly recommended.
- Best Hikes in CMR is a great book for parents and kids to utilize for day hikes in the area. We found the most critical piece was that their ratings of difficutly and timeframes to complete are accurate. Also has many hikes in area's that are not the typical "tourist" hikes. The only negative was the limited maps that went along with the trail descriptions. Would be great if the author could point us to better maps or have a web site with them.
