  1. I thought that I knew Rhode Island fairly well after going to school there for four years. However, this book introduced me to so many beautiful places that it seems only locals know about. The maps are easy to follow if you want to get away from the Newport crowds and relax in serene surroundings.

  2. Rhode Island, accessible to all New England, truly offers quite a bit of exploration. Having done a fair bit of paddling in Northern California, I had yet to find an equivalent on the East coast; Matheson's guide helped fill that gap. As an avid sailor it is hard to pull myself away from the Newport action, but some days I want to appreciate the shores that are so often ignored. Lot's of history as well as beauty in this tiny state, and Discover Rhode Island truly delivers on its title.

  1. This book's title is misleading, and provides next to no info about camping. Its information about water conditions and white water classifications is pathetic (and unsafe) as well. More information is available about the rivers the author chose to include in the DeLorme Vermont Gazeteer and Atlas. I wish I didn't order this book, it will become camping toilet paper or an emergency fire starter.

  2. I liked this book and used it for some paddling & camping in NH. It gave nice descriptions of the water conditions and paddling descriptions. I agree that it's not a 'how to' book on camping. It's a reference for people who know camping already and are looking for rivers to paddle & camp along.

  1. I really liked this book. Not only were there a large number of well-researched trips, but there were lots of extras that made the book a great resource.

The first section of the book is a review of basic kayaking information. Having read this type of information before, I nonetheless found Ms. Evans' text easy to read and helpful. I particularly liked her treatment of hypothermia, one of the main hazards of sea kayaking.

The main section of this book consists of 42 of carefully detailed trips. Each one begins with a overview of important information about tides, local hazards, and NOAA charts. One of the things I liked about the text is that Ms. Evans wasn't afraid to include a few subjective statements such as: "Nauset Marsh is one of the most beautiful places in Massachusetts for paddling serene, unspoiled, and protected water." I found these comments helpful in making trip choices.

In addition to trip details, Ms. Evans includes quite a bit of information about local access, conservation and environmental issues. Information such as why horseshoe crabs are important, why over-development harms local waters (nitrogen overloading causes oxygen depletion), and why the preservation of salt marshes is so important (they give food and shelter to 2/3rds of all commercially valuable fish and shellfish). It makes sense that Ms. Evans knows about these issues since she practices environmental law in Boston.

All in all a valuable resource for Massachusetts paddlers.

  1. Covered Bridges of Vermont was a delight to read. Have visited 103 of the ones he writes about, and the directions to them are very good, historical background accurate, and pictures are also very good. He gives tips for the best time of day to take photographs, taking into consideration the location of each bridge. No covered bridge enthuiast should be without a copy! He lists other places of interest as well. Now will have to find the ones we missed on our trips! Would have paid twice the price, and well worth it.

  2. This is an excellent book for covered bridge finding. The directions are perfect to the tenth of a mile, roads are well defined as to location from the nearest town. Photo tips are very helpful. Plus, you get a short history about the bridge and the maker. I recently used this book to find several bridges in Vermont and was very happy that the information here is so pricise

  3. Found the book very helpful in finding covered bridges in vermont. Included exact directions to and history about each bridge and was organized according to region. A great guide for any covered bridge enthusiast!

  4. This book was very informative on covered bridges in Vermont. Design descriptions of the various types of bridges are quite illuminating. The 215-page book is thoughtfully organized, broken down to reflect 13 distinct geographic areas in which the bridges are clustered so that the reader can effectively plan covered bridge tours. Black and white photographs and maps are provided to aid the reader in easily locating these bridges. I highly recommend the book for anyone interested in covered bridges!

  1. This is one of the easiest street atlas's that I have ever seen to find your way around. This atlas has a lot of details with city hall's, post offices, and other useful information in bold red so you can find the things that you need. It is clear and conscience and with this you should be able to find just about anywhere you wish to go. This is a must have for any traveler who doesn't know the area.

  1. A delightful collection of ocean kayaking trips along the entire New England coast, from Maine to Connecticut. The book describes more than 30 trips in detail: put-in spots, suggested route, possible lunch spots, scenery, caution areas, campsites, and local-knowledge items such as what tide is required for a passage, plus post-paddling eating establishments. Venn covers both day trips and multi-day camping expeditions. The author has clearly done her research in planning each trip, incorporating her own knowledge and experience with that of local paddlers who have done these trips for years. Venn's style is easy to read and follow, and if you have a navigational chart of the area it is very easy to map her suggested route using her text descriptions and the maps provided. The introduction contains very brief overviews of such general topics as equipment, navigation, and rescues, but because of the limited space delegated them, these topics are best covered elsewhere. Overall, this is an immensely useful book with enough detail so you know what to expect before you drive to the boat launch. If you live in New England, I highly recommend it.

  1. The writer really knows what he's talking about and has some great practical advice. The book's layout made it easy for me to arrange hiking trips with my friends, since it tells me the difficult of each hiking trail. Very informative and invaluable.
