2 comments about The North Atlantic Coast: A Literary Field Guide (Stories from Where We Live).
- This anthology is a collection of stories rooted in the North Atlantic Coast, beginning with Newfoundland. It includes the genres of poetry, short story, fiction and creative non fiction. Intended as a teaching tool for children, I found the book to be compelling in the imagery it evoked, particularly of the sea and its inhabitants, both human and animal.
- Stories from Where We Live focuses on regional experiences from dwellers on the North Atlantic coast ages 9 and older, but is recommended in our adult issue because the entire family will relish these stories. From netting crabs on the Jersey shore to outdoors experiences in Delaware, this gathers regional experiences told through stories, poems, and journal entries to provide an inviting collection of tales.

1 comments about Hakluyt's Promise: An Elizabethan's Obsession for an English America.
- This new study of Hakluyt gives the scholar-propagandist his due. I remember reading A.L. Rowse's books at school covering some of the same ground, but I suppose they are not much read now and this brings the picture to a new generation. I enjoyed the book and found it pleasantly informative; I was, however, worried by the number of slips I observed on a fairly casual reading:
p16 contains great confusion. Eleanor of Castile died in 1290 and was Edward I's wife, not Henry III's [his wife Eleanor of Provence died in 1291]. Clearly neither was being buried in the 1490s;
Bishop Fox of Winchester founded Corpus Christi College, not Christ Church;
'Kinneston in Hereford' is actually Kinaston in Herefordshire;
it is strange to assert as if all agree that the Black Death started in India;
p92- 'memento mori' is misused;
William the Silent was not Elizabeth I's cousin [though princes addressed each other in such polite terms];
the forms Madre de Deus and Madre di Dios both occur;
Hugh Castlehaven was not a prelate [actually the term canon is also misused at one point with the phrase 'the canon' as if a cathedral only has one. I think clerical titles confuse our author at times.]
Well, it is still a good book but it does shake one's confidence a little.

1 comments about Hiking Guide to Mount Washington & the Presidential Range, 6th.
- This book is excellent for anyone who likes to hike in new hampshire, but likes to stick to the presidentials. It's informative, compact and an essentail edition to any hikers pack. It comes with a map of the range, too. Now is a great time to buy because the AMC maps have just been given a make-over. They are now full colorized and eaiser to read. A very cool feature with the map is that it has an iset of Mount Washington from the hermit lake shelter to the summit. All in all, a wonderful book.

2 comments about The National Geographic Traveler: London.
- This is a great complement to the Eyewitness Guide to London, with a similar design (glossy pages, ample photos and maps). Louise Nicholson is tremendously knowledgable, experienced at writing about London, and offers the reader well-written text in chapters focussed on London's neighbourhoods. The book features detailed descriptions (1-4 pages) of London's must-see and lesser-known sights, and suggested London walks.
The guide adequately addresses requisite travel details, and is current for 2000. Opening times, contact information, and indication of expense-range of entry charges is included in sidebars throughout the text. The guide's Travelwise section reviews restaurants and hotels, shopping and entertainment, and offers the usual travel advice. Overall, the National Geographic guide best serves as supplementary background reading in preparation for a first-time or repeat visit to London. Another guide, such as the Eyewitness Guide, would probably better serve as a primary guide for quick reference while touring in London, especially for first-time visitors
- My boyfriend and I went to London and took this book and a Fodors and found that *between them* we had the perfect travel guide. The National Geographic guide had better maps, beautiful pictures, and more detailed information, but about fewer things. It also doesn't have exact prices and instead it has a certain number of dollar signs to tell you generally how expensive something is, which was a bit annoying (I know they were trying to stay vague in order to account for changes since printing, but still...). I highly recommend this book in combination with the Fodors, which has more superficial information but about a tremendous number of things. The only drawback about that is- two books get heavy when you are lugging them around London.
