5 comments about The Starship Diaries: Two Years Exploring The Planet In The Last Aircraft Of Its Kind.
- Rare is the writer who can convincingly celebrate both the beauty and science of flight, and the joys of travel. This book clearly appeals to pilots and aviation enthusiasts, yet it also stands up as a legitimate travel and adventure story even for readers without an aviation background. Geeky technical detail is largely relegated to the 150+ footnotes. Kachan is a former journalist, and it shows. His prose is engaging yet economical. The book's unique blend of fact and fiction and real-world developments make The Starship Diaries a unique work of art.
- I've been a fan of flight simulation since Microsoft FS98. I've been an aviation fan (worked at airports & U.S. Air Force) since 1968. I've read many aviation books and I must say that Kachan's work is as eloquent as Ernest K. Gann or Richard Bach (IMHO). I can't seem to put the book down. It really doesn't matter if you're an flight nut (like me) or into travel writing. There's something here for everybody. Enjoy!
- I'm having a real problem with this book (it must be me, everyone else seems to like it). The author has not flown a Starship around the world (possibly not flown one at all), he has not visited all the places he writes about, and the events which take place never happened. As a work of pure fiction this would be ok if it were also well written and researched enough to be believable, but it is not. As a book which masquerades as a genuine travelogue and account of the actual details involved in flying a Starship around the world, the fact that it's mostly fabricated and full of inaccuracies undermines the very premise. It doesn't work as a piece of fiction, and it doesn't work as a travelogue. I persevered until I reached page 196, where the author describes a visit to the Potala Palace in Kathmandu, Nepal. The Potala Palace is in fact in Lhasa, Tibet.
- This book is a great testament to an innovative plane and the spirit of adventure that lurks inside many (all?) of us. Who wouldn't want to vicariously share in travels all over the globe and learn about faraway places? Yeah, there's the occasional factual or syntax error in the first printing that escaped the book's editor. But show me ANY other work as technically or artistically ambitious as this, that appeals to such a wide-ranging technical and non-technical audience, that doesn't have a shortcoming or two. The book inspires me to visit faraway places and celebrates the mystery and geekiness of flight. And that makes it great, in my opinion.
- As a pilot, I enjoyed this aviation experience. The starship seems the perfect magic carpet vehicle for the dream that many of us share - round-the-world on your terms, at your own pace, and by your own hand.

- This book is beautifully done --a MUST HAVE for those interested in Dallas' history. Included in it are many until-now rarely-seen photos from various collections. Definitely worth its price!
- An excellent contribution to Turner Publishing's "Historical Photos"
On the surface this could be any city. On closer look you can see not only historic sites and people in the nearly two hundred photographs, but the city already has taken on the feel that makes Dallas great.
One fun thing about the photos that include historic places as Love Field and Adolphus Hotel, are the pictures of the changing technology. Can you imagine working at the central switchboard (phone system) or protecting your health by drinking Budweiser "Its Thoroughly Aged - Not Green or Unfinished."
This is not just a hodge-podge of un-related photos. The collection was chosen and arranged by Michael V. Hazel, a native of Dallas, who taught Dallas history at SMU.
The photos are chronologically ordered in era's form the 1940's through 1969. Living there since 1957 my history overlaps however I could not find a picture of me. Yet we can all live this time with this book.

- I picked this book up as a gift for a client who was staying a week in Dallas and had never been to Texas before. He went through the book and picked places he wanted to go, and apparently had a grand time, because he still raves about his trip.
As I didn't get the book back, I had to purchase another copy and was surprised to see how many interesting places there are in the Metroplex that even I didn't know about (and I've lived here for nearly forever.) I've since recommended this book to my company for future visiting clients and trainees. Great source of information, excellent organization and primo insight on "must sees".
- Wow. I've been in Dallas/Irving area fifty years (since 6 mo. old) and when I picked up this book to take a look, I was amazed at all the places to go I didn't know about! I bought a copy and have enjoyed browsing its offerings! What a great gift for anyone new to the area. What am I talking about? I'm not new! It'll make a great gift - period! A must though for newcomers - hey, real estate people, what an idea for new home buyers coming into the area! And there's so many different great tid bits of info. Thanks to the author for all her work making the Metroplex a breeze to enjoy!
- This book is by far the worst travel book I have ever read.
If you are a serious traveler, this book is not for you. If you are someone on a Sunday outing go ahead buy it. This book doesnt give you any info on ways to reach places by public transportation. The restaurant reviews arent much help and the author spends too much time reviewing Fort Worth. Also the entertainment section is horrible. There is much more to do in Dallas than the book reflects.

2 comments about A Marmac Guide to Dallas.
- This is a very comprehensive guide: it really disects Dallas. There is even a section on street names and their origins! I am very familiar with Dallas and was impressed with how well this guide gets Dallas, especially the shopping section, which quite frankly to Dallas natives is a full contact sport. The discriptions on Northpark and the Galleria, as well as Highland Park Village is very good. The section on hotels and restaurants is also excellent. I really can't think of an area not covered in this guide, whether you are on your first visit to Big D or a native, this guide will not disappoint and you'll learn a great deal about this singular city.
- This book is the perfect example of what can happen when publisher's deadlines rush the author, resulting in a poor end product. Further, the editing in this guide seems to be sorely lacking. The book is full of gramattical errors and irregular sentences, many in broken English.
All of these problems could be overlooked if the guide accomplished what it claims. One glaring example of the haphazard organization of this work is the utter lack of clearly useful information and the inclusion of near worthless facts. For example, the "New Residents" section of the guide includes an odd commentary on Texas' Concealed Carry law while information relating to cable, phone, and internet service is absent. In the "Restaurants" section, there is only one Tex-Mex restaurant listed. That's right; one Tex-Mex restaurant merits listing in a city that is 40% hispanic, with a higher number of restaurants per capita than any other city in America.
Then, there are the factual errors. The guide states that teenagers who get driver's licenses in Texas can only drive to and from home, and then, only when someone over 21 is riding with them. If only this were the case. The fact that this is factually incorrect is excusable; the fact that this is included in a guide to Dallas is utterly incomprehensible.
Finally, the author of this guide seems to have a very negative opinion of Dallas. Whether this is a byass of the author or the intent of the Atlanta-based publisher is unknown. However, when the author states or quotes that Dallas is an "ugly city," that Dallas has "severe racial problems," and that Dallas is "utterly flat," it should indicate that perhaps someone with a more neutral stance should write a guide to the city.

5 comments about Jerry Jones and the "New Regime": Memoirs, Recollections, Times and Travels With "America's Team" and Its Most Notorious Cowboy.
- While Cowboys fans all felt that Jerry was a villain when he first took over the Cowboys we are now glad he did. This book shows his single minded drive to win games and championships. I have a lot of other material about the Cowboys for fans that wish to borrow them email me.
- JERRY JONES AND THE NEW REGIME KEEPS YOU FLIPPING PAGE AFTER PAGE. I READ IT IN ABOUT 4 HOURS. IT IS AN EXCELLENT REVIEW OF WHAT ACCTUALLY HAPPENS BEHIND AND INFRONT OF THE CAMERA. IT GOES INTO EXTREME DETAIL ON WHO AND WHAT KIND OF RUTHLESS PERSON JERRY JONES ACTUALLY IS. FROM FAMILY TO BUSINESS ALL OF JERRY'S WILD TALES. OVERALL AN EXCELLENT BOOK TO KILL TIME ON LONG FLIGHTS OR JUST SITTING IN BED. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK AND EVERY DALLAS COWBOY FAN SHOULD HAVE IT.
- I am female and like to watch football so I thought it would be an interesting read, but to my surprise, it was much more than that. It is a very candid and somewhat blunt account of life and times with the team members and their owner. The book was so intriguing to me that I actually read it in one evening. It reads like you are having a converstation with the author and he is telling you one unbelievable story after another! I was thoroughly entertained as well as educated on what REALLY goes on behind closed doors.
- This book was hard to put down once I started reading it. Mr. Cawthorn gives great insight to the world of NFL football and the "fly on the wall" play by play of the life of Jerry Jones. Unbelievably shocking and funny stories that will make you want to read it all the first time you pick it up.
- Overall a very enjoyable book, especially for the distant cowboys fan across here in the UK. Todds' love of the Cowboys is very apparent all the way through but, and maybe it's my fault for not reading the details more thoroughly, there is no direct input from Jerry Jones or any of the organisation, something that I'm sure would have made the book much more credible.
