1 comments about Narrative of the Expedition to the China Seas and Japan, 1852-1854.
- This book is an excellent reference book in studying present American diplomatic negotiation-way with foreign coutries pursuing only American national interests and in knowing that a most amazing advanced Edo's infrastructure and highest literacy rate in the world in spite of uncivilized conditions because of the Edicts of Seclusion and that there are some Japanese who were cultivated in Western scientic and technological knowledge and could speak and read English as well as Dutch in spite of the Edicts of Seclusion. MY surprise is also great to know a visit of the Commodore Perry fleet to Japan did not occure abruptly but it was announced to EdoGovernement throug Dutch factory in Dejima, Nagasaki.

1 comments about Shanghai: Electric & Lurid City.
- I was pleasantly surprised by this anthology of collected works by Barbara Baker. It gave an beautiful, rounded, poetic description of Shanghai from 700BC-Present by various, inspired authors. A must have book due to content and styles of writing.

1 comments about Hong Kong x 24 x 365: A Year in the Life of a City.
- Do you remember all the songs that used the robot voice filter? This is the photographic equivalent of that. In an effort to be artistic, the photographer has resorted to blurry photos. I'm not saying blurry photos aren't artistic... but when more than half the photos are like that, it wears out its welcome. I wish I had the chance to preview some photos.
For a place like Hong Kong, these photos are mundane. I'm not looking for tourist style photos, but something out of the ordinary. It looks like the photographer didn't try hard enough to find interesting subjects. Since this is a 365 day style book and since most photos are taken at night, I'm guessing these photos were taken on the way back home from work.
According to the appendix, the photos in this book were taken with a digital camera using only zoom lenses with upper ranges of 105mm and 432mm.
365 days x (Night time photography + zoom lens - tripod) = bad blurry photos
I bought this book since I've taken over thousands of photos in Hong Kong in 20+ trips. I was looking for something that would really impress me. This book wasn't it. I'm immediately returning it.
