- To sum up my opinion, this book seems more like a book about the history / culture of Chicago than a tourist guide for the city. Specifically, the book has an interesting account of the history of the city, and many beautiful photos. Unfortunately, the descriptions of the sights and restraunts are not informative enough if this book was to be used as a tourist guide. This seems to be a general trend in the "Compass American Guides" line of Fodor's. A significant weakness in my opinion.
The section in this book about Grant Park is a representative example of the general feel of this book. The description of Grant Park feels a little short, but does does list all the important sights of the park. Furthermore, the photograph that accompanies the description of the park is of a little girl eating a watermelon. The picture is a closeup so that you can't actually see any of the park. This is useful for capturing Chicago culture, but not useful for knowing what the park is like. I would have prefered a picture of the famous Buckingham Fountain.
Also, this book does not say anything about the Millenium Park except to say that it exists. This is probably because the book was published in 2001 and that is the same year the park was opened. However, the Millenium Park is an important sight so it would be good to get a guide that includes a description of it.

1 comments about The Best of Chicago and Illinois.
- This is an excellent travel book for Chicago and its surrounding area, but it is not on a level with say a Fodor's guide book. One of the nice features of this book is the excellent photography on nearly every page and the included information on how to take better pictures at the different places you visit. I also liked the witty style of the text -- for example while talking about how to eat Chicago Hot Dogs:
"Accept no substitutes. Ketchup can draw stares. Sauerkrat will peg you as an out-of-towner and chili. . .well we won't even talk about that."
The drawbacks were minor, but noticeable. The book is about Chicago. There is very little about any other place in Illinois, so the title is very deceiving. There is no information at all about some excellent things to visit in the rural areas just north of Chicago. Another annoying thing is that all of the pictures in the book are captioned in 10 languages, including Greek, Chinese and Polish just to name a few, but the books main text is written exclusively in very coloquial American English. There are also the ads that appear within the book itself, much like it is some kind of magazine.
In general, this is a very good guide to the city of Chicago if you are an American travelling there. I wouldn't make it my only guidebook, but its excellent style and detailed information make it a very good second book.
