3 comments about The Last Kings of Thule: With the Polar Eskimos, As They Face Their Destiny.
- Insightful and introspective account of the author's extended study of the Polar Innuit of the Thule district in Greenland. The most recent edition includes the author's bittersweet reflections many years later on modern incursions that threaten the survival of this indigenous culture.
- Fantastic background to the area both from the antropological and geographical points of veiw. However, when I visited Qaanaaq in 1990 and mentioned this book I found that the local inhabitants were not impressed by their protrayal. Particularly concerning the more private aspects of their society.
- Although the primary objectives of Malaurie's work were cartographic and geological in nature, he became, by default, a primary voice in describing the Thule culture by recounting his personal experiences and lifestyle during the expedition. Surely, ethnography can never be a truly objective effort, but Malaurie seems to appreciate this and relates cultural information through an admitted cultural filter. Rather than stifle his own reactions in his writing, Malaurie has adequately described, with sensitivity, his personal paradigm shift as well as that of the culture he is inevitably impacting by his very presence. It is inevitable that in any ethnographic description it will be found that something is amiss, lacking, due to the inevitable loss of information that occurs whenever information is transferred across cultural and linguistic lines. This work is one of the few that I have read that treats cultural interaction and exchange with dignity on behalf of the observed and the one observing. And, after all, these lines of distinction regarding observer and the observed shift and change radically during such a period of cultural interaction. Malaurie wonderfully describes this process.

3 comments about MapEasy's Guidemap to Chicago.
- This is a really unique and interesting map. The map is made of a plastic-type, flexible material, so it doesn't rip or wear easily. It is very sturdy! While it doesn't cover the entire city (just the downtown area and a small overview map of the Chicago area) it lists RESTAURANTS, HOTELS, and other attractions with brief comments on price, etc. It has a lot of useful information, and yet it is very clean and SO easy to read. We have used this map several times when staying in downtown Chicago and it is perfect for those times after a long day of sight-seeing or shopping when you want to know, "Where do we eat?" Also, for those of you who have small children or limited desire for walking long distances, you can easily count the blocks to the nearest McDonald's from your location. This map was perfect for trip planning on the fly and I highly recommend it! (By the way, this map does not have any public transporation information on it, but it does show where parking garages are located).
- I have used this map for the last 6 years. I have purchased and passed on my map to friends and recently bought another copy. It's the best map of Chicago next to the CTA map. Not only is it useful, it makes a nice keepsake of the city.
- This laminated guide is great for sightseeing use. It includes the Mag Mile, The Loop, and other visitor areas. and the CTA. However, it does not cover the whole city. Different landmarks and businesses are included which is great if you are not familiar with the city.

3 comments about Moving to Chicago: The Practical Companion to Your New City, from Stepping in to Stepping Out (Moving to... Series).
- Not a bad guide ... *if* you're moving to the city. Suburbs are not covered at all, except for some off-handed remarks about the "hinterlands".
Also had some errors in radio station listings.
- Was this book edited at all? It reads as though it was written in one weekend, with no references other than the Yellow Pages. For example, the author "helpfully" provides us with a listing of good temp agencies--suspiciously, every single one begins with the letter "A". You have to wonder if any real research was done in other parts of the book, or if the author just copied down names and addresses from the phone book (as she clearly did in this section). The writing is repetitive and full of generalizations, and many of her "facts" are just plain wrong. I moved to Chicago three years ago, and I wish I hadn't had this book then.
- I bought this book before moving to Chicago six months ago and it has been almost a total lack of help for anything I've tried to use it for. For starters, the neighborhood information is completely out-of-date (I passed up good neighborhoods because of this book!). And unbelievably, this book for NEWCOMERS lacks a comprehensive index and instead organizes everything by neighborhoods. In other words, if you want to know where any major landmark is, you have to look it up by neighborhood--but wait, you don't know the neighborhoods yet because you're new. This was a real brainstorm by whoever organized this book, and it's a real fun way to waste 20 minutes when you're just trying to find an address. There is decent information here, but I can never find any of it when I need to. My advice: skip this title and go straight for Fodor's Cityguide Chicago or The Unofficial Guide to Chicago, both excellent guides with clearly organized and updated information. They would both be loads of help to a newcomer.
