3 comments about The Last Kings of Thule: With the Polar Eskimos, As They Face Their Destiny.
  1. Insightful and introspective account of the author's extended study of the Polar Innuit of the Thule district in Greenland. The most recent edition includes the author's bittersweet reflections many years later on modern incursions that threaten the survival of this indigenous culture.

  2. Fantastic background to the area both from the antropological and geographical points of veiw. However, when I visited Qaanaaq in 1990 and mentioned this book I found that the local inhabitants were not impressed by their protrayal. Particularly concerning the more private aspects of their society.

  3. Although the primary objectives of Malaurie's work were cartographic and geological in nature, he became, by default, a primary voice in describing the Thule culture by recounting his personal experiences and lifestyle during the expedition. Surely, ethnography can never be a truly objective effort, but Malaurie seems to appreciate this and relates cultural information through an admitted cultural filter. Rather than stifle his own reactions in his writing, Malaurie has adequately described, with sensitivity, his personal paradigm shift as well as that of the culture he is inevitably impacting by his very presence. It is inevitable that in any ethnographic description it will be found that something is amiss, lacking, due to the inevitable loss of information that occurs whenever information is transferred across cultural and linguistic lines. This work is one of the few that I have read that treats cultural interaction and exchange with dignity on behalf of the observed and the one observing. And, after all, these lines of distinction regarding observer and the observed shift and change radically during such a period of cultural interaction. Malaurie wonderfully describes this process.

1 comments about Today's Chicago Blues.
  1. This book is different than other books about Chicago blues. Its journalistic style covers a lot of ground in less than 250 pages. It is contemporary in the sense that it captures the Chicago Blues scene today, not as it existed fifty or even five years ago.

"Today's Chicago Blues" serves a dual audience. First of all it is a "must have" for out-of town blues fans who wants to maximize their trip to the Blues Mecca known as Chicago. The book not only contains a detailed guide to the many blues venues in the Chicago area, but it also includes little known items like the location of grave-sites for blues legends like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, and Jimmy Rogers. Hanson also reveals the addresses of blues landmarks like Muddy's residences, the site of the old Chess Records studio now been restored by the Blues Heaven Foundation, the historic Maxwell Street Market, and the Leyland Hotel in Aurora. A visitor from out of town would benefit greatly from the encyclopedic treatment of everything from Blues Fest to the local radio stations that play blues to the blues jamming venues for visitors who want to bring their ax. Of course, the author gives extensive biographical treatment to the blues musicians who keep the great music alive.

But "Today's Chicago Blues" is not just for out-of-towners. Even the most devoted Chicago based blues fan will learn little-known facts and blues history. For me I was astounded to learn that WOPA's legendary blues radio tradition continues today at 1490 AM dial (the same frequency that broadcast Big Bill Hill) with host John Gorny from midnight to 5 am on Monday's. In addition to the facts and history, there were countless blues bars and juke joints listed by the author which I never knew existed. And maybe I'll drop Hubert Sumlin an email from the address that Hanson gives along with her biography of the renowned guitarist.

Greg Freerksen, host Blues Edition WDCB Public Radio, Glen Ellyn, Illinois

  1. There is a reason that Vampire head developer Justin Achilli considers the Chicago by Night book the best of the city by night sourcebooks. It is.

Since it's publication, arguably more gamers have set their chronicles and campaigns in the World of Darkness city of Chicago than any other location. The politics, the intruige, the power struggles and the beautiful storytelling make this setting one of the most exciting and evocative places in the entire WOD.

The tales of Prince Lodin and the Succubus club are well known by nearly every Vampire player, and they started here. If you're a new storyteller or and old master, pick this book up, even if you don't intend to use it. You'll be glad that you did.
