  1. It is well known that Japanese citizens living on the American West Coast were interned in concentration camps during World War II. But on the whole the Germans and Italians living in the East and Midwest were not.

This book reports on the internment of Germans who had been living in Latin America that were arrested by their government at the instigation of the US government, deported to the US and interned. (Later, the Government in a strange sort of logic determined that they hadn't entered the country legally and were trying to deport them.)

This is the story of a little known incident that affected the lives of a lot of people. It was not the United States at it's best. Then again, neither was the treatment of the Japanese, nor the situations at Guantanamo or Abu Ghraib.

  2. We Were Not the Enemy: Remembering the United States Latin-American Civilian Internment Program of World War IIWE WERE NOT THE ENEMY IS AN AMAZING INSIGHT INTO WORLD WAR II AND THE "CONCENTRATION CAMPS" OF AMERICA. TO SOMEONE WHO NEVER LIVED SUCH A NIGHTMARE YOU CANNOT IMAGINE THE INTERNEES SUFFERING. THIS BOOK SPEAKS TO THE IMPACT OF INTERNMENT ON THE COUNTRIES, STATES, COMMUNITIES AND THE HIGHLY PERSONAL ISSUES OF HUSBAND, WIFE AND CHILDREN. THIS IS A STORY THAT NEEDED TO BE TOLD THROUGH THE LIFE EXPERIENCE OF AN INTERNEE. HEIDI GERCKE DONALD DID LIVE THIS NIGHTMARE. THE RESEARCH FOR THIS BOOK ENRICHED THE PERSONAL STORY. JOB WELL DONE !

  1. Having done a 21 day shoot for our "Best Caribbean Beaches" DVD on Amazon, here, I can say this book was an invaluable resource. It would have been 5 stars, but Fodor's continues not to include pictures. They have great maps, with beaches located, and well described. They even have the Ferry routes in the Virgin Islands so you can plan your trips. (Though my old Ferry almost sank when it blew an engine in 5 foot swells! Luckily, we were rescued.) I strongly recommend this as a factual resource. However, if you want to see and hear what Caribbean Beaches look like, check out our DVD after reading this book.

  1. This book is an interesting introduction to women's issues in Argentina for feminists, and an insightful examination of the relationships between home, country, nation, and literature.

  1. "Diving in the Caribbean" is a gorgeous guide to over 100 underwater attractions in 17 of the most splendid sites in the Caribbean. Veteran underwater photographer and author Lawson Wood takes us from Bermuda and the Bahamas to Belize and Mexico's Caribbean coastline. He not only writes an informed and concise essay on each locale, he provides a side-bar that lists such helpful details as Best Time to Go, Climate, Getting There, Special Interest, Accommodations, and Dive Operations. Wood's photos are large, clear, and plentiful. Some pictures are even double-paged (e.g., giant stingrays at Grand Cayman, a stretch of craggy coastline at Dutch Antilles, and a school of tiny bluehead wrasse patroling resplendid reef crests). Wood is such a fine photographer that I wish he had included more exterior shots of the islands and dive locations! This handsome volume is a commendable purchase.

  2. With more than 250 photographs and maps, this book will give you plenty of information about one of the world's hottest diving destinations. From the Gulf of Mexico to the Windward islands, passing through Cuba, the Bahamas and Puerto Rico, Belize, Bonaire and Curacao, you will get to know the best dive sites in the Caribbean, with indication on the best time to go, how to get there, the climate, accommodation and dive operations and useful emergency information. The pictures, by underwater photographer and author Lawson Wood, are extraordinary and there is also a well-written description of the islands and diving locations, and although the book is a little expensive, it is worhty, specially if you are a snorkeler a scuba diver or just love the sea. Go for it!

  3. When I saw this book in a local store,I bough it immidiatley.
It was so great that I have no other book of such beauty.
Although I know that this is a diving guide and not an overblown photo book,I bought it mostly for the images.
It is done in a very aesthetic way, accompanied by some short facts about the animals and where they usually live. Although not as species-rich as some other seas of the world,The Caribbean is a very fascinating area with all of it`s shapes in the reefs. There are even some "personalities" among the fishes.
The photographs are capturing both cuteness and humour, majestic reefscapes, and just sheer beauty, like the stingrays.
The Caribbean is definitley a very colourfull marine area, and the largest coral reef of the northern half of the world.
Although I do not dive myself,I find this book very helpfull, because it is telling you about the temperature of water and air, when to go,special interests, etc.
And,as a sample from the book, here are the ten golden rules for Diving:

*Avoid touching coral with your hands, fins, tanks, etc.

    *Do not wear gloves

    *Never stand on coral

*Do NOT collect any marine life

*Avoid overweighting and work on your buoyancy control

*Do not feed fish alien foods

*Make sure your equipment consoles to not drag the coral

    *Do not use spear guns

    *Do not molest marine life

*Do not climb inside barrel sponges

*Through your reactions, consider your impact on aquatic life

*Report any environmental disturbances of destructions of any divesite
So,that is why I like this book so much. It combines the practical elements with the artistic.
To the ones interested in diving, buy it for the facts.
They are certainly good to know.
To naturalists, buy it for the photographs. They are quite inspiring and attempting. Among my favorites are giant sponges,
    stingrays,groupers,moray eels,and anemones.
Now,dive in and get your own marine life adventure!

  1. A pretty complete review of the best diving sites around the island with exceptional photographs. It is really a shame that the author did not provide the GPS coordinates information which he refers to on page 9. That would make it an outstanding value!!! José Amador Aguadilla, Puerto Rico e-mail: casagra2@caribe.net

  2. This book does have some great tips but when it comes to specific locations it falls short. When I went to several towns looking for the locations mentioned in the book, I fould many locals unaware of them. Some have never heard of them and I could never find the location. Maybe if a specific departure location was givin (city or port) instead of a bay or area, would be helpful. Great photography by the way.

  3. The author attempts to cover an island as large as the state of connecticut in only 21 dives. Puerto Rico is so vast that the author should return to cover it better. But he does a decent job in the few words he used. He also tells it like it is, not like much of the travel stories you read in dive magazines.

  4. This book provided a pretty good overview of diving and snorkelling in Puerto Rico. We picked two diving sites and one snorkelling site based on it. It over-estimated the difficulty of one of the dives, and did not warn us about several factors that degraded our diving experience.

  1. I live in St.Thomas, USVI and wanted to build a doll house for my 3 yr old to have as a rememberance of living on a tropical island. Since St. Thomas is a US Territory it is more Americanized, so I purchased Caribbean Style for a better refference. It is now my doll house bible. Now my daughter will have a authentic reproduction Caribbean house!

  2. this book was not what i had anticipated.
it might be great for tourists who want to see the true island living,or doll house makers, however,
as an architecture student and a caribbean native i was not impressed by the literature, or lack thereof.
    excellent photography.

  3. My favorite of the Style books. I purchased this when it came out and glad I did. I still enjoy the beautiful pictures that really bring you back to the islands. To me this is the best of all the style books--with other titles English Style, French Style, Spanish Style. Caribbean Style has remained in print and stood the test of time. Also an excellent reference for interior designers for island style.

  4. I purchased this book based on the reviews other people had left here, and greatly anticipated it's arrival. When It got here today, I couldn't wait to look through it. As I turned the pages, I wondered if the other reviewers had been looking at the same book! I was hughly disappointed. The only thing I found worthwhile was about the last 35 pages, which showed architectural details in the form of drawn elevations. It showed the different style of homes most commonly found on each island. This must be what the reviewer who said it was a great reference for an interior designer meant. I am an interior designer and other than those few pages, I would never find this book useful as a reference tool. The majority of homes and landscapes were of the locals and had no "style" whatsoever. Many of the photographs were so small you couldn't see any detail. There was very little text, so I am at a loss as to what all these other people are even talking about.
If you are interested in what the islands look like once you get beyond the hotels and resorts or what the people native to the islands live like, you might find this book interesting, but if you're hoping to see lush tropical gardens and stylish homes with a tropical design theme, this isn't the book you want. Even if you are looking for some historical aspects of design in the islands I much prefer "Caribbean Elegance" by Michael Conners. If I had been in a bookstore and flipped through the pages of this book I would never have purchased it.

  5. This is a colorful escape book with beautiful pictures of Carribean architecture. The photos are interesting and well-taken. A great addition to any coffee table. Sometimes when I feel down, all I need to do is jump into these pages and my spirit is refreshed.
