  1. Ian describes in detail the most romatic inns, hotels and getaways available in the Caribbean. He writes the information you REALLY want to know before you travel...location of the room, the activities not to miss, what to expect and special details which set apart his book from all the rest. I read this book cover to cover and marked all the places I wanted to travel based on his recommendation. After I traveled to the first location on my honeymoon (it was everything I pictured it to be, based on his description) I then put it to the test and traveled once again to a location I read about in the book. Again, I was impressed at the detail he was able to capture within the pages.

I plan to travel to each of the resorts he rates highly and would recommend to any reader that enjoys the Caribbean to pick up this book and you won't be disappointed. In fact, even if you don't step foot out of the privacy of your our home, after reading this book, you will feel as if you have traveled to some of the most amazing Hideaways in the Caribbean.

  2. Keown's detailed and forthright travel guide is must-read for anyone looking for an off-the-beaten-track, romantic beach vacation. We each read Keown's descriptions of the various resorts cover to cover and dog-eared the possibilities - then compared notes. Truthfully, any of the resorts he reviewed would have fit the bill, but his thorough evaluation of four areas (dining, sports, rates and the hard-to-capture "atmosphere" category) allowed us to find the right fit for our vacation. He tells you which islands to pick depending on your budget, mood and individual needs, then takes you through virtually every consideration you'll need to select the right resort, down to island taxes, transports, tipping, and room service availability. His pet peeves are the same as ours - no huge hotels, no convention centers, and no cruise ships! Thanks to Keown, we were able to find the perfect romantic Caribbean hideaway for our honeymoon. We loved it so much we're buying the 9th edition for our next vacation.

  1. It covered most of the island with greta details and information. it is a shamed that it di not cover mona Island the best dive site in PR. Also, it lacks enough info on shore dive in the island. But overall it gives you enough information to keep you wanting to go back to Puerto rico to dive.

  2. My first reaction to this book was one of excitment, this came from my first perusing the pictures. I was, however, severly disappointed when I actually got into the information that the book contained. The first quarter of the book is devoted to a breif and very lacking overview of Puerto Rico. Although not that useful it didn't hurt. However, there were two things that really bothered me about the book. First was that almost all of the dive sites listed need a guide. The second was that despite the fact that it claims to be a snorkel and dive guide book there is virtually zero snorkel information and of the few sights mentioned only 3, I believe, were actually not seemingly impossible to get to. In fact, my old budget travel guide for puerto rico had over three times as many snorkelnig sites, with, as I was dismayed to see, a lot of sites that were not even included in the SNORKEL and dive guide. How a guide on underwater adventure can be outshown by a general travel guide is beyond me but it is. Do not buy this book if you are planning to mix dives with snorkel and are looking for an all inclusive, it just doesn't have the info. Also, as I said most of the dives require a guide which makes the information in the book rather pointless as the guides will know where the great sites are and a quick conversation can lead you to your next guide and site. This, it seems is probably what the guy who wrote the book did, just went from guide to guide. The main dive areas are well know on the island and you aren't really getting any information that you couldn't just by being here get yourself. My vote, Not worth it.

  3. One previous reviewer suggests that if you are on the ground (or in the water) in Puerto Rico, you won't need this book, you can just "ask around". This is surely true. The chief use of such a book is for planning a visit to Puerto Rico; that is, you use the book at home and perhaps leave it there. The pictures are enticing, the information is well-indexed and quickly comprehended, and I found nothing incorrect in the one usage I made of the guide. I had one day free in a business visit to San Juan, I used to book to decide that Fajardo should be my starting point, I snorkeled at sites around the offshore island of Palominos, and I had a superb experience. No doubt the same info could have been found elsewhere, but this book allowed me to feel confident in my choice.

  1. It is a pity that a good photographic material is loost in a deficient printing. The paper is porous and it make photos look dim.

  2. The Book and CD sound kind of gimmicky but rest assured both are great. When I ordered it I figured I'd get a cool book with neat old car photos and a lame-o CD. Not so! The music is very good! A fun item!

  1. has something for everyone. treasure hunting. island living. pets. boating. rescue at sea. very genuine. well written.

dave gale is a good story teller.

  2. Excellent story about life in the Abacos. You truly get the feeling of what they were going through and how wonderful it was(is)and also of their struggles. A must read for anyone interested in the out islands.

  3. Dave Gale has a lovely perspective not just on island life but on life as a whole. It's easy to think that a tropical paradise such as the Bahamas would simply provide a simple, idyllic existence, but as he describes it I was amazed at the richness and variation, hardships and quirky characters. All in all, a very enjoyable read.

  4. The Bahamas and the Caribbean are a special passion for me so it comes as no surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Having lived on an island before I can tell you that Dave Gales' accounts of island life are without question. Elbow Cay and the rest Abaco are some of the best Bahamas has to offer along with the other so called Out Islands. If you have ever wondered what it was or would be like to live on an island make this a part of your library.

  1. Insight Guides usually are good for preparation for a trip but not so good for the nitty gritty of the trip. In the case of Caribbean Cruises however, this book worked well to choose which things to target in our one day per island off the boat.

  1. Mike Hollywood's The West Indies On $50.00 A Day: Guesthouse Travel In The Caribbean is a superlative guide for enjoying an inexpensive, adventures, memorable vacation throughout the Caribbean. The key are the guesthouses and small inns of the Caribbean, places likely never recommended by travel agents or accessible to cruise ship based itineraries. Mike Hollywood draws upon his fourteen years of experience and expertise as president of Bimbo Limbo Travel Consultants to present a totally "user friendly" travel guide that avoids the glitzy and high-priced resorts, while allowing the traveler to become emersed in the people and culture of the islands first-hand. Planning a trip to the West Indies and constrained by budgetary considerations? Then The West Indies On $50.00 A Day is the guidebook for you!

  1. Excellent detail charts of anchorages in BVI. Only complaint is the lack of a general chart of each island in the section describing that island. This is an editorial preference on my part. There is a chart index near the front of the guide which will get you there but it is not handy when you are in a hurry. I would recommend Pavlidis' guide to anyone planning on exploring the Virgin Islands.
