  1. The Bahamas are generally mistreated by guide book companies. The Open Road Guidebook is almost four times shorter then that on Tahiti, while the Rough guide is much shorter then that on Jamaica. Guidebooks tend to treat the Bahamas as a place where you rest, drink & dive. Very little background info and almost nothing about the Out Islands. Lonely Planet had by far the best book, but then with the new format in 2005 came a very poor and short edition, so LP has definitely lost that title. Now IMHO Frommer's is the best. Closely followed by Fodor's. They have the normal info for package tour guys, but they also have some interesting background reading. And all of it is in good proportions, unlike the Insight Guide which has a stunning amount of background reading but very little practical info.

  2. Very very good resource of information, made me feel a lot more comfortable with my hotel choice and what part of the island I am staying on. Very excited to go on my trip and see if they were right.

  1. Well, I think this is the second best guide to the Bahamas. I'd suggest Frommer's is a bit better, but that's just my opinion. Both guides seem to have what others (like Lonely Planet, which was the best guide, up to the last edition) seem to lack. Nice background and off the beaten track info. Also the guides are not "just background" info, as can be said about the Insight Guide, which is nice reading, but has very few practical tips and taking into account it's size and weight you will probobly read it and leave it at home.

  2. I have bought Fodors Guides for many years, so i decided to get an updated version for this year's trip. I was surprised that the section on Grand Bahama Island was so brief on recommedations. I decided to go to the Frommers website, and even the website had 2 or 3 times as many restaurant reviews. Since this was the only thing I really needed, I will buy Frommers next time. The Fodors guide is stil well organized and informative to a first time or novice traveler to GBI, but the volume of reviews is missing.

  1. This is an excellent book from Puerto Rico. It will help you if would like to share with others how beautiful is our island or if you live far away from PR and like to remeber and see beautiful images of PR. It offers a great variety of images from Old San Juan to Cabo Rojo's lighthouse.
The only complaint I have with the book is that some of the images are not recent other than that is a great book.

  2. Great book with descriptions and history of the island. Great color photographs.

  1. I am planning to go to Las Vegas and so I bought this book. This is really useful. I especially like the photos and they make me more looking forward to my trip. Of course, since this is a pocket book, you cannot expect too much detail from it. However, this is more than enough for me who is going for a 5- to 6-day trip.

  2. It was a good book with a great list of top 10 things but the problem is that the times and stuff in the book are way outdated. Don't use this book to go by the times that the hotels do their performaces. It does help to rate places well but I was pretty disappointed in the information. I would suggest you get the 2006 guide to vegas because it is a lot more helpful.

  3. This book is great for anyone who hasn't been to Las Vegas in awhile. It gives you good insight into the new hotels and attractions. The book also gives you a low down on the best places to go to eat, people watch and party !

  4. We forgot to bring it along on the trip, but still utilized it for many searches and planning before the trip. we will definitely bring it with on out next Vegas experience!

  5. This book lists the Tropicana as the #2 hotel after all the big themed hotels. I chose the Tropicana over two other hotels based on this book's rating, since I've had luck with these Top 10 guides for other cities like Cancun, San Fran, and Seattle. This book is a bit outdated, but even a couple of years back, the Tropicana couldn't have deserved to be #2. In fact, I would rate it #2 on the list of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in.

We booked a Garden room, but they put us in a Tower room at first. The hallways were dark, with peeling wallpaper and damaged wood trim. The elevators had poorly-painted pictures on the door with the paint peeling off. Our non-smoking room smelled of smoke and we couldn't get the window open, so we called the desk and they sent someone to spray it down, adding more of whatever odor was already attempting to cover the cigarette stench. We went back to the desk and got the Garden room we had paid for, which was a step up, but not far up. I had to pick the toilet seat up off of the bathroom floor and reattach it. The hot water in the bathtub wouldn't completely turn off. The air wasn't turning on, so I opened the balcony door, kicking over a half-empty beer can as I stepped out. Our departing flight got canceled and we had to stay an extra night, so we booked a hotel that was luxurious in comparison to the Tropicana - the Comfort Inn!

  1. A month ago our family suddenly booked a Disney Mediterranean 11 night cruise. Having never cruised, I panicked. This book that will be in my purse the whole time. It describes the ship, the ports, and answers about a million other questions. As a novice, I have since visited many websites, the library, and bookstores and this is the most complete and fun to read book of any. I love the writers' enthusiasm and attention to detail. Passporter's packing list is worth the book price!

  2. In these book are great practical guide for the new and not-so new to cruising. It tells you detailed review on most aspects of cruising at Disney- from staterooms, dining, excursions and "tricks" to making your vacation more manageable and less overwhelming. My favorite part is how to avoid being sea sick in the cruise with numerous suggestions. The other part is the sample menu in the dining areas. The list of items to bring in a cruise is an invaluable tool as I have committed the mistake of bringing the wrong outfits for my last cruise. Definitely indispensable!

  3. The information in this book allowed us to make informed decisions well in advance of our trip. Information regarding the various types of rooms, the dining choices, and on the the excursions available allowed us to plan out our trip. Even has lots of 'tips and tricks' on how to make the best of our hard-earned dollars. I have also purchased the passporter for WDW. These books are very helpful for those who are avid planners.

  4. When I get a guide book. I look for things such as fine details and points to look for. The PassPorters books dose that and even more. Their web site is a gold mine Disney. The people who wrote this book are totally absolved by everything Disney go to their forum. I have tons of other guides books, I am taking my family on the 7 day Disney Cruse next year and wanted a detail guide about the route where we are taking. This book does that and things I never could of known. I higher recommend these books from PassPorters they are totally above everything you could find for a Disney trip with fine details.

  5. I have never been on a cruise so I was starting from zero. This book helped me and my family understand all of the options available from Disney and allowed us to make informed decisions. The authors have been there and done that, literally, and share with us their experiences, insights, and photographs. Each activity at sea and on shore is explained in great detail. Each member of my family actually read through these with highlighter in hand, marking off the ones they wanted us to do. It makes planning a lot easier.

In that same vein, I found the descriptions of the cabins to be particularly useful. With almost a dozen cabin classes, how is a newbie supposed to choose? I suspected the cabins with the pianos would be a tad pricey, but after that I was lost. This book came to the rescue. It provides diagrams, measurements, and features for each cabin class, along with first-person descriptions.

If you're considering taking a Disney cruise, then you really have to get this book.

  1. The photographs are excellent, sharing the Bahamian lifestyle with the viewer. For those that do in-depth research prior to their travels, this is informative covering history and major sites. Highly recommend for the interesting coverage of sites. Not detailed enough for the actual trip planning. Worth the purchase for those who want more then the basic go see this and go do that.

  1. This was our first BVI Sailing guide and is still one of our most used. It is an excellent resource with maps, great insider's tips, and recomendations. The best part are its maps which cleary show where mooring balls, channel markers, and other navigational aids are lcoated in the most popular anchorages. We highly recommend this book to all who sail the BVI.

  2. We have several copies of this over the years. Our first copy from 1986 we still use as we have annotated it with dive sites, nav info etc...

These books are just about the same as having local knowledge. You can stare at a chart forever, but you won't get the detail that you find in these hand drawn maps and local nav knowledge that you can use.

As with all of these guides, they only show you the anchorages that MOST people go to. There are many others that you have to be a chart wiz to figure out (and I'm not going to tell....).

  1. If you're interested in Hemingway or Cuba, or if you're a sailor, you'll find something here. Schaefer writes interestingly and authoritatively about all three. What's best is his easy, warm, natural writing style that I find particularly reader-friendly. He makes it seem effortless. It's a great read.

  2. I recommend this book to people curious about Hemingway, Cuba and the perils of navigating the inland waterway. Schaefer succeds by capturing both the hard truths and the enigmatic character of his three subjects--sailing, Hemingway and Cuba.

  3. Dave Schaefer had the urge to see Cuba and track down Hemingway's old haunters, and used his 32-foot sloop to sail from Berlington, Vermont south through the Champlain Canal to the Hudson, the Keys, and beyond. This armchair read will delight any with an interest in sailing experiences.

  4. The author tries to do a number of things in this book: write about sailing, Cuba, Hemingway, and fulfilling lifelong dreams. It's a tall order, but he makes it work. He weaves the disparate elements well, while his sparce prose (like his literary idol Papa) and strong narrative drive take the reader on an easy, informative, and ultimately pleasureable armchair cruise.
