  1. The beauty of the Kuyahoora Valley is captured and preserved for all by the outstanding photography of M. Paul Keesler. The author shares his discovery of places often not seen even by area natives. The interesting prose and fantastic illustrations, many in color, make this book almost as good as an actual visit to this scenic and historic valley.

  1. The green guide has a lot of information on history of the churches - but very little on hotels and restaurants. While I might go to a church, I have to find a hotel.

It's organized in alphabetical order, rather than by region. This means that areas that areas in the very far north might appear on an adjacent pages to a town on the US border. You need to know the place names in your area and skip through the entire book to find the areas relevant to your itinerary.

  2. The Green Guide to Quebec joins quite a row of Green Guides which I began buying in 1959 in France. This guide has the expected historical and practical discussion of the areas in question plus it unexpectedly has some brief discussions of local foods and restaurants of the areas. Since I am still in the planning stage for this trip, my review doesn't come from personal judgement of the Guide's coverage of the material it professes to cover but I remain happy with it.

5 comments about Paradise Creek: A True Story of Adventure in the Canadian Wilderness.
  1. I love outdoor adventure books and this book is a great one. This is a story of living and thriving in the Canadian wilderness. I was fascinated with the authors adventures of building a cabin, hunting moose, and exploring. If you like outdoor books I recommend this as a must read.

  2. Most of us dream of adventures when we are young ... but the responsibilities of the world often derail them. David Scott's story is a tale of the dream of adventure fulfilled.

  3. Although I found the book simple and intellectually unchallenging, its sincerity, freshness and admiration for the wilderness and being a part of it were emotionally stirring. It reminded me of the importance of being able to step away from comitments to work, banks and acquaintances to experience something larger than all of us. We need this to remind us of the essence of being alive and human.

  4. The opening sequence of their expedition rivals that of any true life-and-death experience, including "Touching The Void." A must-read for any winter-camper who ventures off the beaten path more than a few days away from luxuries like mechanical heat from an automobile. This is one of the most profound stories of northern wilderness experience that I have ever read. Their story is similar to going to the moon on an Apollo mission, with no backup and no radio contact, and making it on their own. Truly the best story ever told of a modern Arctic expedition with a happy ending. This is a book that I read and immediately gave to a friend to read, and it has passed around to no less than 12 people as a "must read" already, and is still in motion.

  5. I read this book several years ago from the library. I rarely buy a book but this one I have. Great adventure story about the challenges two young men face living in a cabin for a year in Manitoba. The description of the first six days trying to find the cabin after getting dropped off is a page turner.

Makes me wish I did something similar at that stage im my life as opposed to sitting at a cubicle. This books gives me the inspiration to maybe strike out and seek my own adventure someday.

  1. As a South African living in Europe with a similar and yet in many ways different background, I am able to identify with Mr Jacobson's sensitive account of his search for his family roots in Lithuania. The construction of the work itself is a masterpiece: first his perception of Lithuania from South Africa, then his childhood in South Africa and then the encounter with Lithuania, where he finds nothing concrete and yet conveys the atmosphere of what he finds so movingly. The touching letter to his grandfather and his dream at the end are full of feeling and yet not in the least sentimental. This book has deeply impressed me and given me a wonderfully tragic picture of Lithuania.

  1. This Atlas is good for travel but not as good as the larger one.
It is compact and easy to store in the car or truck.

  2. I owned a much older larger size Rand McNally Road Atlas. I needed a new one and then read all the other views before buying this Deluxe Midsize. While this Deluxe Midsize might be right for some individuals, I now wish I would of gotten the Larger Size. This one lacks the detail and large print of the Larger Size. One almost needs a magnifying glass to read some of the smaller print on the maps. I do like the spiral bond.

  3. Spiral binding and small size makes it an easy map to use in the car but the small size makes it not a very informational map! So limited in detail - I wouldn't rely on it for more than general "point me in the right direction" use. This was a waste of money for my purposes - glad I bought the big one also.

  4. .....as the other reviewers state this atlas is just a tad too small. The larger version would be more ideal for those with not so perfect eyesight.

This version of Rand McNally Atlas is recommended for those who do not wish to take up a lot of space and don't need their atlas to go into great or easy to see detail.

I like it, but it still could have been better.

  5. The Rand McNally 2008 Road Midsize Road Atlas is the perfect size to take on a trip. It also has a lot of good features, such as information on different areas of the states that have interesting things to see and do, but that aren't well known to most people. We have seen many great places that we did not know about before using these Atlases (this is our third one). We recommend this Atlas highly.
