  1. I am just several days before spending my holiday in British Columbia and the Canadian rockies, and this book really gives a lot of pre-fun. Very informative, very useful information (with places to stay, places to dine, must see attractions etc.) and an enthusiastic style make it a pleasure to read. I am sure that it will be of great value for every tourist who will visit this part of Canada.

  2. Frommers now has numerous books that cover British Columbia as part of larger guides. I have the British Columbia/Canadian Rockies one, but they all contain the same text, which has been repackaged into different titles. As to this book itself, the layout is easy to find your way around and the information is reliable and has obviously been well researched. The hotel listings are especially detailed, down to descriptions of inroom curtains. This formula obviously appeals to many travelers and while I often pass up their hotel listings (too expensive for me), their restaurant descriptions are extremely helpful for me when on the road. They often describe actual dishes giving me a great feel of what to expect in each restaurant.

On the downside, so much space is given to accommodations and restaurants that the most important part of traveling is as good as ignored-what there is to see and do. The reason I travel and that BC is so popular as a destination is the great outdoors. I want to read about what there is do and what to see-the best hiking trails in the national parks, why it's worth my money to go whalewatching, etc. Many marvelous places in the province are missing completely. The book also lacks photos and the maps are poor or outdated (nothing that a good map from a gas station will fix!).

In conclusion, I like the look and feel of the Frommers book and have found that I can rely it when it comes to dining information. I always carry the Moon book as a reference for the ins and outs of each town and together the two books make perfect partners for my travels.

  1. Part of the outstanding "Backcountry Guide" series from The Countryman Press, 25 Bicycle Tours In The Lake Champlain Region: Scenic Tours In Vermont, New York, And Quebec offers wonderfully satisfying bike hikes through New York's Adirondacks, Vermont's Green Mountains, and the scenery and charms of Quebec's historic towns and villages. Including a wide range of lodging and dining options, cyclists can explore the southern tip of the lake in Whitehall, New York, to the quaint college town of Middlebury, Vermont. The various tours range from scenic and flat 10 mile loops to adventurous 82-mile rides through the easter Adirondacks. Whether for an afternoon's pleasant exercise or a weekend of high cycling adventure, 25 Bicycle Tours In The Lake Champlain Region is an enthusiastically recommended regional guide.

  2. I used this book to take a six-day bike tour from Burlington, VT to Montreal, Quebec, and I had a great trip. The author's directions are so accurate that I was able to ride all the way to Montreal without consulting a map! The author recommended hotels that are conveniently located for cyclists and chose roads and bike paths that were scenic and generally had light traffic. This book is a valuable resource for any bicycle tourist!

  3. If you are looking for a book with a wide variety of interconnected tours in the Lake Champlain Region, you cannot do much better than this one! From easy juants to planning 10 days around the Lake, it is a great resource. Really looking forward to doing some bike exploring in the region.

  1. These are good books.
But maps are too condensed to be used when driving

  2. Why did they make the print so small? I just passed through NYC and paid two extra bridge tolls because I couldn't read this while driving.

  3. As I don't have a collection of maps that covers all of North American, I have always found this atlas a useful resource for studying "the lay of the land" for places far from home--and that has helped me to know which other (more detailed) maps I might need to acquire before leaving on a trip.

  1. While the book presents numerous types of agricultural buildings from all over the U.S., it doesn't go into any sort of detail about any of them, making it of limited reference use.

  2. For what I wanted the book for it is a fantastic resourse. I build model barns and covered bridges. This book has not only given me new ideas but also a history behind them. Love the book.

  3. This field guide has what I consider to be soso black and white photos and drawings of each type of barn and supporting structures. If you are looking for accurate information on a style of barn and where it may be located this is the book for you. I would perfer better quality photo's and some color. Rather boring presentation!

  1. Wow! That's really "Hit the road Jack". I live near the Florida Trail but swamp wading with the snakes and the gators? No way Jose! But I am totally enjoying it from my armchair. Go get them. You are a better man than me Charlie Brown!

  2. I received my copy today and I'm up to page 100. It is a blend of humor, a man's journey, and numerous inspiring quotes...that makes me want to hit Eastern Mountain Sports and start the hike. Someday I plan to hike the Triple Crown, etc. Cheers to this man who has had the desire, dream and drive to complete an epic journey and share it with the world. Thanks for a great read and giving me another glimpse into long-distance hiking.

  3. As well as a resource-full account of Eb's travels, this is also a very entertaining book. Full of daily quotations, poetic descriptions of the landscape and people, and, more than anything, uplifting. Congratulations on a job well-done, Eb. Not just the trip, but its recording for the rest of us.

  4. What a wonderful and inspiring book!! If you are a backpacker, outdoorsman, or a couch AT hiker, this book is very enjoyable. Eb makes you feel like you are walking every step with him. The book also helps one to realize the "kindness" and generosity of the American and Canadian people. It was uplifting to read a 500+ page book without one bit of negativity toward anyone by the author. Thank you Nimblewill!

  5. Well written account of hiking trip for such a long distance. Sometimes too wordy on spirtual themes.

  1. The 2nd edition proved very useful for my last Newfoundland trip, so I bought the just-published 3rd edition for my next trip. But when I opened the book I discovered a major publishing error: the two-page map of Gros Morne National Park, one of Newfoundland's most important destinations, is missing. A map of a different park appears in its place. A few weeks after I informed Frommer's, they sent me a PDF version of the missing map. They also said they'd post it to the "updates" section of their web site, but as of June 2008 it still isn't there.

So, one star to Frommer's for their error and their failure to correct it months after learning of it. But five stars to Andrew Hempstead for the rest of the content, which is at least as good as that in the 2nd edition. Too bad he was let down by his publisher. If you're the kind of person who doesn't mind a Maine guidebook missing a map of Acadia National Park or an Arizona guidebook missing a map of the Grand Canyon area, feel free to purchase this.
