- Ms. Windh has done us a real service by showing us a part of the world where few of us visit. In real life may it ever remain as lovely and as unspoiled as in her photos.

5 comments about Toronto City Guide.
- I was so glad to have this book on my trip!
- I just got back from a 4 day trip to Toronto with this book as my guide, and I must say it's one great book.
The format of this book is different from other guidebooks like Lonely Planet and Fodor's, but it's also the best part about it. The author breaks the city into 35 or so sections, and devotes two pages to each section. On the left hand page is a map of that particular section. These are great maps; they contain street numbers, locations of major sites, locations of restaurants, and locations of little things like convenience stores. On the facing page is a (unually historical) description about that section of town. Need to find out where you are? No need to break out a large, clumsy, fold out map of the city. Just figure out what part of town you're in, turn to that page in the book, and there you go. The rest of of book contains usual guidebook info like listings of major restaurants, sites, how to get to/from the airport, more maps (the one of the subway is very useful) and stuff like that. NOTE: one thing the book lacks is hotel information. Nothing about budget accomodations, B&B's, fancy hotels. . .nothing. So don't rely on this book to get you a place to stay for the night, but you can rely on it for everything else.
- This book on Toronto, the city of my birth, is one of the most practical and interesting books on the city. Each chapter is cleary set out and includes not just real practical help, but interesting trivia too. There are many street maps which accompany text : they are very precise, yet not over detailed, so the reader never gets bogged down in unnecessary mire.
The chapter on City life and entertainment is my favourite: starting with an annual calendar of events to suit really every taste, it then proceeds to break down all types of entertainment into different categories, again with well laid out plans on how to get there.Metro Toronto is now a huge, sprawling multi-cultural city, yet the author has managed superbly to break down the city into manageable , readable sections entitled: Neighbourhood Profiles. which for every 34 neighbourhood section on each double page, has the map of the neighbourhood on the left side and on the right, complementary and again, interesting, practical information for the visitor. John Must has done a really thorough job on this and coupled with the really affordable priced, pardon the pun , but this book is a must.
- I've purchased dozens of travel guides for many different cities/countries over the years and this is the worst one I've ever seen. I bought it based on the reviews, but am very disappointed. I'm going to ditch it and try a more familiar publisher.
- I am sad to see there are some quite unfriendly reviews of this book. I used it every day when I first came to this city and still consult it with pleasure and in confidence. I have found it always useful and while I have learned much more about what is in Toronto I have not needed to buy a different one.

3 comments about The Circus at the Edge of the Earth: Travels with the Great Wallenda Circus.
- For a month in spring 1997, Wilkins traveled with the Great Wallenda Circus, a gritty group of seasoned circus vets, on a trip through a remote stretch of Canada. Facing such obstacles as unyielding immigration regulations (for both animals and performers), unprecedented flooding with unseasonable temperatures, and fierce competition from another circus, the Wallenda performers (led by Karl's grandson, Ricky Wallenda) show their merit as troupers in the truest sense of the word. Interspersed with descriptions of the circus's performances in the often-chilly and poorly lit hockey venues of Manitoba are the stories of the circus's performers and crew, each of which reveals a different facet of the daily dangers of circus life: unpredictable (and sometimes in-bred) tigers, vendetta-holding elephants, unstable rigging for aerial acts, and the omnipresent fatigue that can make a performer misstep minutely, but fatally. Beyond these dangers, however, is another threat to the circus's performers, which Wilkins chronicles beautifully and movingly: the decline and fall of the circus in America. It's a casualty with complex causation, including the senescence of Shriners (who sponsor a large number of American circus performances), the rise of the animal rights movement, and the effect of television, with its showy tromp l'oeil special effects, on our expectations for entertainment. Is watching a 370-pound man put an elderly, blind elephant through a series of slow-moving tricks enough of a thrill for audiences raised on car chases and gunfire? Wilkins thinks so, and after reading this wonderful book, so do I.
- I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this book, from the subject matter to the personality of the author to the quality of the writing, which is excellent. At times, it reads as luridly and poetically as a novel. If you are enamored of the circus, as I am, and would like to run away with one for a while--even if only in your imagination--this is the book for you.
- Very well written, and fascinating. The author gives the reader an 'insider' view of the circus world; this includes an objective and respectful portrayal of the brave and talented people. I appreciated the honest perspectives, i.e., hearing 'the other side of the story' in terms of animal rights. It is a beautiful, touching, absolutely fantastic story.

- User friendly road atlas. You get a lot of information for the price and its just the right size. I love the sprial binding, that makes it easy to change pages.
- I just purchased this book and found it to be very good until I wanted to check for a low clearence. Each state has all of their counties listed with the clearences in feet and inches. The bad news no where on any of the maps does it name any counties. So the book is useless to me for that reason.
