1 comments about The Howls of August: Encounters with Algonquin Wolves.
  1. Michael's first encounter with wolves was at age 12 and he can't get enough of them. He considers himself very lucky to have been drawn to the natural world at a young age and this beautifully written book shows it. I'm not just saying this; I really like his writing style because it's so down to earth. The timber wolf has had a bad rap and it's about time we realize its importance in the natural scheme of things. Incidentally, there's a great chapter on Algonquin Park's annual wolf howl event, which is in August. Ever been to one?

1 comments about Desolation Sound: A History.
  1. Desolation Sound: A History is an anecdote-filled chronicle of the rich past of Desolation Sound, one hundred miles north of Vancouver, British Columbia. Today, Desolation Sound is almost as depopulated today as it was in 1792 when the dyspeptic Captain George Vancouver named it. From reclusive hermits, to a Depression-era logging camp that valued life so poorly that accident victims were piled in a heap and not moved until the following day, Sliammon chief Joe Mitchell, and much more. Debunking false legends and confirming true stories, Desolation Sound is a most enjoyable read accessible to history lovers of all backgrounds, and is highly recommended for Canadian History shelves.

1 comments about High and Wild.
  1. Written and photographed by the greatest adventure photographer of all time, High and Wild is a must read for anyone who enjoys outdoor adventures. Galen Rowell takes us on many of his greatest outdoor journeys from California to Tibet to Alaska in this large format book. The photos are incredible and the accounts by Rowell make you wish you were there. Sadly, Galen Rowell was killed in a plane crash in August 2002 so the world will be deprived of more of his talented works. This review is for the original version, published in 1979. I look forward to the new version, published in Oct. 2002.
