3 comments about The Canadian Rockies.
- I recently went on New Year's ski trip to Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada (1998-99) and took some great pictures. Unlike my amature pictures, Douglas Lighton's pictures truly capture the spirit and raw beauty of this unsploiled landscape. In this book, on the inside cover, one line reads,
"Many of today's visitors are on their own kind of vision quest. These mountains rejuvenate tired souls." Let me tell you, I left my high stress corporate job and graduate studies for 8 days to enter the most beautiful area I have ever visited in my 28 years of existance. I fully agree with the author when he wrote, "These mountains rejuvenate tired souls." I came back to Atlanta changed forever by the utter sense of "awh" when we stayed in the magnificint resort town of Banff and visited the surrounding areas like Lake Louise. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates the splendor of mother nature doing her finest work. I also recommend visiting Banff National Park in either the summer and/or winter seasons; either time of year you will get the full effect of this magnificent and rejuvenating area. By the way, the residents of this area are among the friendliest people I have ever met too!
- If you're looking for the perfect "coffee table book" this is it. From first glance you will be captivated by the most beautiful pictorial you could ever lay your eyes on, no exaggeration! This book will have you calling your travel agent and planning a trip to Canada A.S.A.P. From Mt. Robson in Jasper to Red Rock Canyon in Waterton, over 100 pgs of full color landscapes, flora and fauna of the Canadian Rockies. Each picture is titled and described with historical facts and details which only enhance your enjoyment of this awesome book. I highly recommend this photographic masterpiece, you won't regret the money spent!
- Douglas Leighton is an amazing photographer. It's clear from looking through this book that he knows how to take photos worthy of publication. I've never been to the Canadian Rockies but now I intend to.

2 comments about Northwest Wine Country, 2nd: Wine's New Frontier.
- While my husband and I were browsing at our favorite bookstore, we discussed where we should travel next. We both love wine, so we thought maybe a wine tasting tour would be next. As San Franciscans, we visit the Sonoma and Napa valleys often, but we wanted to go somewhere different. We have used the Hills' guides to Sonoma and Napa in the past so we asked the book store clerk to suggest something similar, and then we found a copy of "Northwest Wine Country:Wine's New Frontier." Immediately, we were intrigued. We had no idea how many great places there were to visit. We ended up planning a trip which took us on a road trip from San Francisco up through Oregon and into Washington state. Our favorite part of this book were the great descriptions and details regarding each winery. Not only were the directions great, but we learned so much about each winery as we drove closer. My husband and I took turns reading to each other as the other drove. We really enjoyed those in Washington state especially near and around Spokane. We had visited the Seattle area before, but had never ventured into this part of WA. My husband is a collector of wine bottle labels which he meticulously saves in a book. The Hills pointed out a winery near Spoakne, THe Worden Washington Winery, and specifically mention their "distinctive labels." That helped us decide where we should go. Everything they said was right! We loved the winery and the labels. We spent four days visiting the eight or so wineries in the area while also enjoying the local scenery. We had a wonderful time. If we had not read this book, we may have never found such a great place to spend a some time together while visiting and learning about such interesting places.
- This is a worthwhile book for the Northwest wine tourist. I have used it successfully on a recent trip, and found its descriptions to be accurate. As is keeping with this type of book, when the author finds the wines to be outstanding, it is so stated, but when they find the wine average, they focus on some positive aspect of the visit instead. With that in mind, you can either pursue the best wines, or the most enjoyable visits, whichever you seek. The only thing that I would fault the book for is the maps, they are very general only, and sometimes it would be nice to have something specific. But, hey, that's what Mapquest is for, so if you're going to find a winery off the beaten path, print out a detailed map before you go. Or call when you're on the road, this book has all the relevant telephone numbers that you'll need.

1 comments about Letters from America (Hesperus Modern Voices).
- Although "Letters From America" was actually a series of articles that represents the only time in Rupert Brooke's life when he had a paying job, they
work well as a book. Written at a juncture in the poet's life when he suffered
from considerable emotional strain in his personal relationships, "Letters" is
his record of the world beyond England. It is perceptive,
elegant writing. Very personal, very interesting (not only
for its picture of North America in the early part of this century,
but also for its picture of Brooke, with all of his foibles and
prejudices).Had he lived through WWI, Rupert Brooke
could have been an outstanding prose writer, as "Letters"
suggests. Unfortunately, it was not to be.

2 comments about Pedaling Northwards: A Father & Son's Bicycle Adventure from Virginia to Canada.
- This book made me wish my knees were not so creaky. In this time of point-to-point travel (skipping everything in between) it is wonderful to be on the land with this father and son as they make their way north. Their adventures and misadventures have the immediacy of real-life experience. I recommend it to arm chair travellers and bike-seat travellers alike! It is suitable for young adult readers as well as adults. My children loved the audio version!
- I heard about the book and read it with great interest, and passed it on to my son,who was age 19 at the time. We both enjoyed it,and moved on to other interests. The next year, my son traveled by auto to Alaska(from Virginia) and upon his return,he said to me,"Dad, this is a beautiful country, but you can't see it very well from a car. Why don't we go on a bicycle adventure from Richmond to Toronto like that father and son did in "Pedaling Northward" . At the time I was 48 and son was 20, and we were targeting the following summer. I looked him in the eye,and said, "Sounds like a good idea to me." We did it in 12 days inclusive, and 10 days of cycling. We followed the same course as the author until Elmira,NY at which point we headed northwest toward Buffalo and Niagara. We stopped along the way to talk with people Lind had met ,and learned from his mistakes. We were luckier with the weather...it was cool and dry. I recommend the book as a guide for any father and son who want to enjoy the beauty of this country, the power of bonding, and who want to create a memory that will last a lifetime.

5 comments about Rand Mcnally 2008 Deluxe Midsize Road Atlas United States/Canada/Mexico: Delux Midsize (Rand Mcnally Road Atlas Mid Size Deluxe).
- This Atlas is good for travel but not as good as the larger one.
It is compact and easy to store in the car or truck.
- I owned a much older larger size Rand McNally Road Atlas. I needed a new one and then read all the other views before buying this Deluxe Midsize. While this Deluxe Midsize might be right for some individuals, I now wish I would of gotten the Larger Size. This one lacks the detail and large print of the Larger Size. One almost needs a magnifying glass to read some of the smaller print on the maps. I do like the spiral bond.
- Spiral binding and small size makes it an easy map to use in the car but the small size makes it not a very informational map! So limited in detail - I wouldn't rely on it for more than general "point me in the right direction" use. This was a waste of money for my purposes - glad I bought the big one also.
- .....as the other reviewers state this atlas is just a tad too small. The larger version would be more ideal for those with not so perfect eyesight.
This version of Rand McNally Atlas is recommended for those who do not wish to take up a lot of space and don't need their atlas to go into great or easy to see detail.
I like it, but it still could have been better.
- The Rand McNally 2008 Road Midsize Road Atlas is the perfect size to take on a trip. It also has a lot of good features, such as information on different areas of the states that have interesting things to see and do, but that aren't well known to most people. We have seen many great places that we did not know about before using these Atlases (this is our third one). We recommend this Atlas highly.
