Lakes, rivers, wildlife and recreational sites are detailed on the charts and described in back pages. A must-have for anyone traveling through beautiful British Columbia.



3. This Atlas is the best gift that I have ever given my husband! We have seen parts of this magnificent province that we never knew existed. We have travelled on backroads that are on this map but nowhere else! And the accuracy of those roads is perfect. Men may not ever ask directions......but they sure love to read maps!

1. I have cruised many times before and found this book to be quite honest in its observations. We are sailing to Hawaii and I was able to find the information I wanted. I think this is a great resource for anyone considering a cruise vacation.



2. I have always turned to Frommer's for honest reviews of just about any destination. Their website is full of great info too



3. These books are great tools. I have cruised many times and I still consult them before every cruise. I would say they are must haves for first timers. They summarize the Caribbean, Alaska, Hawaii, as well as many debarkation ports. What I find most useful is the information provided on each of the cruise lines and cruise ships. If you are unsure which ship would be best for you and your family this book will definitely help you decide. I would caution potential buyers visiting very small or less popular islands. Places like Anguilla, Trinidad and Tobago are noticeably absent from the book.



4. Great book to throw in your backpack and take with you on the cruise. You can bone up on a bit of the history and it will get some ideas ffor excursions or places to visit on the islands.

1. This book is a joy to read and a "must have" as a reference book that tells you all you would like to know and more about the history of mountaineering in Canada. Beautifully published with many pictures of the "greats and near greats" of the Canadian mountaineering scene since it all began in the mid 1800's. Chic Scott has produced a book that has already become a classic in mountain literature.



2. Often it seems that even well written fictional accounts do not get my blood racing and my stomach flipping, but Chic Scott has managed to do this in Pushing the Limits. Through this book I have gained a real sense of the mental make-up necessary to being a serious mountaineer. This book is as enjoyable a read as I've come across in recent years.

3 comments about Wild Orchids Across North America: A Botanical Travelogue.

1. Memoirs and travelogues have long been a popular vehicle for sharing personal experiences on a wide variety of subjects. Most natural history tomes of this type are very general and have little specific information to generate vivid images for the reader. Not so with Philip Keenan's assemblage of more than two decades of traveling throughout most of North America in search of many of the wild orchids of that continent.

   Keenan's descriptive prose is a fitting complement for his brilliant full-color images of wild orchids taken in situ from coast to coast. Having accompanied him on many of these forays I can say that each vignette or anecdote brings me back to the day of discovery! For those who have not been there, his photographs will give you a taste of what can be waiting for you.

   Both the very rare and the frequent and familiar are treated with the same reverence and respect. For those who have lived in the Northeast the wide-spread pink lady's-slipper is still be to admired as much as the rapidly decreasing fairy-slipper. Keenan takes us to such diverse places as Newfoundland, Alaska (and its breathtaking Kodiak Island), the pinelands of New Jersey, and the open savannas of southeastern North Carolina. A few days in the 'sky islands' of southeastern Arizona yield several sought-after species. Although not a rabid 'life-lister' as are so many in various natural history fields, Keenan appreciates each new species and joins many of us in completing the study of all species within a genus.

   This volume is both an excellent addition to the native orchidist's library or a perfect gift for anyone who appreciates nature. I can think of no other book on native orchids, or wildflowers in general, that would be as ideal as a first volume to intrigue and infect someone with an appreciation for the natural world around them. I have had the rare satisfaction of experiencing a manuscript about orchids that would be the envy of any writer on any subject, and a pictoral feast that certainly would put Keenan right up there as the Ansel Adams of orchids when it comes to photography.And somewhere up there Rachel Carson must be smiling down and thinking ,"Well done Mr. Keenan", for, like Carson, Keenan has great concern for our voyage through time on our spaceship earth and, in a most disarming manner, alerts us to our ecological responsibilities without being overbearing about it.This is not just about orchids - it's about life.

1. Few people in Ontario, much less the rest of Canada, realize there are substantial waterfalls outside of the west, north and, perhaps, Quebec. This book goes a long way toward rectifying that.
   
   Author Mark Harris divides the province into 5 districts -- Algoma, cottage country, Golden Horseshoe (around the western end of Lake Ontario), Lake Huron and Ottawa Valley -- and uses George Fischer's mostly excellent colour photographs to show us what this province has to offer.
   
   Together, they cover at least 100 waterfalls, including more than a dozen in the Hamilton/Ancaster area (who knew an area best known for steel mills has such natural wonders?)
   
   Each waterfall has a two-page spread including detailed driving instructions, fact boxes including rating, size and nearest settlement, plus a short essay on the waterfall and its history.
   
   Is the book useful? You bet. It quickly became my prime resource when I want to photograph waterfalls. (Another resource:Waterfalls The Niagara Escarpment, by Jerry Lawton and Mikal Lawton. The pictures aren't as good, but it's still quite useful).
