  1. My husnand and I recently spent our honeymoon in the Charlevoix region of Quebec, Canada and enjoyed very much many of the places recommended in Traveler's Eastern Canada Companion. Hotels, restaurants, points of interest: this guidebook helped to make our trip one that we will remember fondly for years.

  1. This is the third Yukon-related book I bought in preparation for a canoe trip between Carmacks and Dawson, and by far the best. Other books were either excessively anecdotal, or covered the Yukon in a way that Frommer's might cover Europe (hotels to stay at and such). This was focused on camping, hiking and canoeing, and what one might expect to see during the trip. Excellent book and well worth the small price. The only suggestion I have is the addition of a subtitle with the word "Yukon" in it, so it would come up on more searches for travel guides to the area.

2 comments about Spooky Canada: Tales of Hauntings, Strange Happenings, and Other Local Lore (Spooky).
  1. A great read! 30 short stories ranging from laugh aloud funny to scary. Great for campfires and Halloween. My favorites: Wendigo - a heart-stopping action/adventure story of the far north; La Corriveau - a creepy ghost story of old Quebec City; The Flying Canoe - an wonderful retelling of an old favorite; I'm Coming Down Now - probably the funniest ghost story I've ever read. Something here for everyone!

  2. Spooky Canada is a book about the folklore of an entire country. The thirty stories cover the entire country from east coast to west. According to the map in the front of the book most Provinces have at least two folklore tales that occurred in their territory. The stories are all excellent and it is hard to pick favorites. Some of the stories are scary, others are sad and some are humorous. One of the stories that I enjoyed reading took place in Calgary, Alberta. The title of the story is "I'm Coming Down Now!". In this story a real estate agent is attempting to sell a haunted house to an American city slicker. The story gets interesting when the agent and the city slicker visit the house one evening.
"The Lady in White" takes place in Tracadie-Sheila, New Brunswick. A father and son take a three mast, thirty foot fishing boat offshore. A storm comes up and the men try to get back to port without wrecking the vessel or getting lost. At this point in the story the White Lady makes her appearance.
The setting for "The Attack of the Mammoth" is Fort Ware , British Columbia. A young woman and her child are pursued by a large mammoth. As the woman attempts to escape the mammoth she is helped by a nearby village . This story provides an insight into the way people lived and the dangers they faced.
This is an excellent folklore book and I highly recommend it. The author in the introduction says "I found far more material than I could ever put into one book...", let's hope that another book sharing wonderful Canadian folklore will be published.

5 comments about Frommer's Banff & Jasper National Parks (Park Guides).
  1. This was almost the only book I followed during my vacation to Banff and Jasper. This books is packed with tips, travel plans and a ton of information for your Canadian Rockies tour. Its a great book!

  2. I have used the Canada guide in the past when visiting Banff, but this book provides more in depth coverage of the parks (Banff and Jasper). If your primary visit is to these places, I would recommend this book as an excellent guide!

  3. Although the book does not contain exactly what I was looking for (detail highway maps)I found the information very helpful for a planned trip.

  4. This book hits the basics but could be organized in a more intuitive, user-friendly fashion. I used this book to supplement Moon Handbooks Alberta for a recent trip to the province.

  5. The Frommer's guide to Banff and Jasper had the expected information but somehow seemed less useful than Lonely Planet guides I have bought for other trips. I didn't like one of the places they recommended staying (Banff Caribou Lodge - nice on the outside but a tiny old guest room). It has hiking information but it just didn't seem very useful or in depth. I ended up relying on other tour guides picked up along the way to help pick out hikes.

  1. Having bought this guide book based upon the use of the dogfriendly.com website (which is a useful tool) - instead of buying the updated AAA guide for dogs - this book has mainly listings of chain hotels -for example Motel 6 and Red Roof Inns - it doesn't have anything much on national parks, camping or state parks - nor does it list dog accepting Bed and breakfasts (if you are solely going on highways this guide is okay - but if you venture off like I do - this guide is not handy) - in my opinion the AAA guide is the better one to buy - it still lacks certain things but this guide needs a much better edit before I would ever buy it again.

  2. I can find more information in the Yellow Pages waste of money!!

  3. I would not particularly recommend this book. It's organized by topic, with dog-friendly parks and beaches, and a long lodgings directory. The lodgings are heavy on chain motels, and lacked listings for some fairly large towns.
I will probably use this book mainly to make sure I'm not missing lodging options. The one feature I liked was a listing by interstate exit of dog-friendly lodgings. But, I don't travel much by interstate; I'm more interested in finding detailed lodgings in tourist-oriented destinations.
Dog-Friendly New England, which I've also reviewed, for example, is a far better guidebook for people who just want a weekend getaway.

  4. Books has lots of helpful information, things that you wouldn't get unless you were really there, such as how one of the beaches in california tried to band dogs a few years ago because of the poop, so we must keep it clean or they will try to close it again. I always clean up after my dog but if I saw some I would probably clean it up. Also good section on traveling with you dogs. And a couple great pictures. Good overall helpful book!

  5. It was so great to be able to reach over, knowing I'd be running out of steam in X amount of hours, figure where I'd be then, and find a motel in this book, call ahead and book.

It actually does have B&B's and some park info, so I'm not sure what the other reviewer was referring to. I am recommending it to many other dog-owning friends of mine. Just put in 10,000 miles and it really was a lifesaver.

  1. Since I haven't travelled all of the routes in this book, I can only rate it by the parts near me. I live (and cycle) near Ottawa. Mr. Katz's recommended route is just fine, but mis-described. He refers to Hope Side Road as regional road 49, which is Eagleson, March, and Almonte Roads, but not Hope Side Road. This description occurs twice in two different routes.

The other obvious point is that this edition was published in 1994; amalgamation of municipalities and downloading of provincial roads with lots of changes of numbers makes a current local map even more necessary. And an older map might be handy for understanding some of the routes.

  2. In 2000 I cycled from Ottawa through the Maritimes. As such, I made heavy use of the "Across Province" routes, with some minor alterations. For the most part, this is a very good guide. Some of the routes are quite beautiful (particularly the section between Hawkesbury and Montreal) and nearly always have very little car traffic on them.

I also cycled part of the Ottawa to Kingston section, and be prepared for the fact that the "new" highway 416 interrupts a couple of the roads in the route -- you should research the ways around the highway for any sections that used to cross what is marked as highway 16.

There were are also some "quirks" not mentioned -- like how the Marie Victorin outside of Montreal inexplicably changes to a 4 lane highway with "No Bicycles" signed at one point. Since there appeared to be no obvious way around, I had to cycle on it. This turned out to be not as bad as one would think, but still an unexpected surprise -- and definitely something that should have been mentioned.

Overall, I would recommend this book. It would also be very useful to motocyclists or even drivers who area interested in taking "the back ways" between points, rather than the well-travelled (and infinitely boring) main highways.

In fact, I was hoping to buy an updated copy. It's a shame that there is no newer version available!

  3. When I opened this book for the first time the cover came apart. It was not glued properly, this a defect from the binding process.

How do you want to preoceed to replqce the book?

    Thanks,

    Serge Drapequ
