  1. Cross-Country Ski Vacations is a delicious introduction to North American cross-country ski resorts and a refreshing testimonial to what's best about snow: skiing upon it!

Jonathan Wiesel's humorous dialogue leads readers past the continent's biggest mountains and over the finest snows while highlighting lodges, food and services. In particular, I enjoyed the personal connection that the writer gives within each chapter by introducing readers to the local skiers or the local history.

It's obvious that the writer has skied every one of the trails in his book and that he would love to have each reader join him on the cross-country ski pistes.

  3. Thanks to Jon Wiesel for doing the leg work for this great guide--and kudos for presenting his exhaustive research with such style and wit. It's been a wonderful help in planning (and dreaming) for family ski vacations; I've also used it extensively for my business. It's clear Wiesel has done his homework, and he understands what skiers are looking for: We want to know how good the tracks are, but we also want to know about the food, the beds, the hosts, etc., not to mention approximately how much money we'll be spending and how long it will take to get there. And the best thing: Weisel's love for skiing comes across loud and clear--echoing the way so many of us feel about the sport. Thanks!

  4. There are some rave reviews about this book already posted. I do not want to unduly detract from this excellent book. However, I do believe some balance should be given. This book, as a vacation guide, is ok. It provides a broad sweep of resorts and fine ski areas, but without any indepth insights about any of them. If you're interested in trying out a new area, this guide is excellent as a starting point for your web research. You will need other guides, or dig out on the web or from references, to really plan out your trip.

I was particularly disappointed with the lack of information available on Northeast areas, but perhaps my expectations were off...again partially due to the rave reviews on this site.
For example, 1 page is given about the Lake Placid region. Perhaps this region is more well known than others so a reminder is not needed?

Fundamentally, I think this guide tries to take on too large a geographic region. I was looking for a few selections in different price categories that were independently reviewed,
and best-in-class. This book doesn't quite hit that mark.

  5. My husband and I have used this book to plan more than ten vacations and on each one we've had a great time. We are at two different levels of skiing (beginner/intermediate and intermediate/advanced), but using this book we have been able to find places that are perfect for both of us. Every place we have been to has had great food and amenities, too, which we read about beforehand. It has been really nice to know that we can plan a vacation being confident that when we get there, we'll have a great time.

  1. Until I came across this book, I had no idea that Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, was a hot bed of classic boating. This book is beautifully photographed and well researched, and will make you want to go to the Lake some sparkling summer day and watch the swells renact the obulence, style, and speed of inland yachting a century ago.

  2. My neighbor who grew up in Lake Geneva, WI made me aware of this book. I have been going up to the Lake Geneva area since 1978 and this book does a remarkable job of showcasing all of beauty of the lake and all of the historic wooden boats that grace its waters. Most boats include a one page spread with a picture, its history and a story including its current owner. The pictures are fantastic with most by pro photographer Bruce Thompson. The book layout is very professional and the binding and paper is high end.

Lake Geneva and its boats are so gorgeous, and this book does a great job capturing them. The most unfortunate thing is that book is so difficult to obtain that everybody I recommend it to has difficulty finding it. So buy it if you can find it.

  1. After just returning from driving around Alaska for one month, (2005) this book is invaluable. Advertisements are plainly marked and information is very useful. It is very nice to be able to know what some of the sights are along the way, where good viewpoints are and where there are picnic areas and rest areas. Only negative is we used the book so much, pages started falling out.
This should be the first purchase for anyone contemplating driving Alaska (and BC, and Yukon) highways.

  2. This is a great guide for visiting & driving in Alaska. All roads are detailed and each mile is described distinctly. There are lots of ads for travel guide activities such as flightseeing, fishing, etc. A great guide to have.

  3. If you read all the entries in this guide, you won't have time to look at any of the views! Extremely comprehensive (down to where there are pullouts to let faster drivers pass) and informative. A little bit of a learning curve is required for travel in directions other than those shown, but not too bad. Road map sections seem very complete. A very useful guide.

  4. We bought "Milepost 2005" on the advice of friends who live in Alaska. We've used it to plan our entire trip this summer & have found my exciting things to see & do while on vacation this summer.

  5. The "Milepost" is a uniquely invaluable resource for travel by road in Alaska and Northwest Canada. This guide will be highly useful for the average tourist, RVer, and camper.

Alaska and Northwest Canada constitute a huge area with vast terrain variation and far less travel infrastructure than most travelers are used to in Southern Canada or the lower 48 states. Travelers should not, for example, expect gas stations, restaurants, and franchise hotels at every exit of the highways, nor should they expect that all facilities will be open year-round. Further, some routes are closed in winter or are highly dangerous due to weather conditions. Finally, travelers should be alert to both the prospect of viewing wildlife along the roads and the hazards of a traffic jam behind, say, a small herd of bison at Muncho Lake in Canada.

The Milepost provides maps, diagrams, photographs, and most of all, an almost mile by mile summary of what to expect in driving the major highways in Alaska and Northwest Canada. The information provided will allow the traveler to locate the next gas station, campground, hotel, or scenic spot. The advertisements included allow some advance planning for areas where few hotel beds may be available. Travelors may also plan ahead for fishing charters on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska or the operating hours of visitor centers or the few but excellent museums that can be found along the road. If buying the most recent edition of the Milepost, travelers can expect some up-to-date information on where to expect major road construction. The Milepost includes information on major hiking trailheads on the main roads, but hikers should seek elsewhere for detailed information on off-road routes.

The Milepost is a must-have guide for road travel in Alaska and Northwest Canada and is most highly recommended to travelers and residents in a wild and scenic part of North America.

  1. In one chapter of this book Wade Davis quotes British writer Lawrence Durell as saying "To know a people..you need only a little patience, a quiet moment and a place where you might listen to the whispered messages of their land."

Wade Davis has lived this suggestion and has harvested the knowledge of some of the most interesting cultures of the world, cultures threatened by the far reach of modernization and environmental destruction.

Reading this book makes me feel like a teenager again. It is full of the fascination of discovery and novel knowledge about the world that is buried under the incessant wash of media news and popular culture. Here you will read of the "survival" culture of Canada, the reason the ethnic cultures of the Amazon have no word for the color blue, an Malaysian forest people without a concept of time, the fragility of our modern economy at risk of collapse from the lack of resin from a jungle tree.

If you have read "The Serpent and the Rainbow" or "One River" you will find familiar but reexamined thoughts on the Vodoun ceremonies of Haiti and the hallucinogen religious journeys of Amazonian shamans.

Wade Davis himself has traveled the world far enough to know and tell many fascinating stories but it is his ability to find those places and moments to listen that have made him an exceptional writer and this book one more treasure to read.
