4 comments about Ontario Provincial Parks Trail Guide.
- "Ontario Provincial Parks Trail Guide: Trail Guide" summarizes a good few of the many provincial parks in Ontario. The parks are listed by region (Northwestern, Southern, Algonquin, etc.) in the province. The descriptions of the parks are not extensive, neither are all of the trails for each park listed or described. Walking/hiking distances are given for each trail that has been listed. At the end of each region section, 2-3 trails are highlighted in a section called "Al's picks" and described in greater depth (some with B&W photos).
While no detailed maps are required of any guide book, it would have been helpful if the book included some maps with a few key cities and roads in Ontario, and the parks pointed out. The parks would have been much easier to locate this way than by just listing addresses and telephone numbers to contact. There are no maps in the book except for a region map (without any detail) at the beginning of each region section. As an avid hiker I expected to see small detailed maps of at least a few selected trails. There are no trail maps in this book.
If you visit the Ontario parks website, you can find similar information as that given in the book. And with a little more surfing, you can even find websites of conservation authorities with - yes, you guessed it - maps of park trails.
"Ontario Provincial Parks Trail Guide: Trail Guide" is a brief summary of the wealth of provincial parks Ontario has got to offer. While it's not of much use to avid hikers like myself, it is good for people wanting to get a general idea of some of the parks in Ontario.
- Allen MacPherson is a genius. This book is a must have for anyone who enjoys the outdoors and trails. He is a great professor, and proves himself with this book. Check out his other book. It is definetly worth reading, too. Do not hesitate to pick this up!!
- Allen MacPherson can do no wrong! What I would do for a chat with this guy. Brilliant book, it covers everything. If you are interested in trails, you need this, no question about it. Pick up his newest release, too. I'm telling you, it is truly great. Don't forget the name, my friends. Allen MacPherson- sheer brilliance!

4 comments about City Unique: Montreal Days And Nights In The 1940s And '50s.
- Weintraub has painted a wonderful portrait of what life was like in Montreal back in the days before the separatists wreaked havoc on the fabric of the city with their language police and sign laws. Daily life in Montreal during the 1940s and 1950s is vividly portrayed in all its variety, from the infamous Padlock Laws of Premier Maurice Duplessis, to the padlock that held stripper Lili St. Cyr's chastity belt in place. The style is journalistic rather than scholarly, and breezy but informative. Weintraub (who is a Montrealer himself) interviewed dozens of people, and their stories are neatly integrated into his historical account of the major events and figures that shaped the era. Highly recommended for anyone who loves Canada's most flamboyant and fascinating city.
- Being a boomer from the West Island, I appreciated this book for the glimpse it afforded me into the "downtown" world of my parents, and a better appreciation for names which exist for me only as streets (Camilien Houde) or Metro stops (the infamous Lionel Groulx). The paperback version of this book did not contain a map, which would have been a helpful asset to a non-Montrealer reader.
- Outrageous as the Belle Ville that it portrays, City Unique is much more than a thoroughly-researched and extremely well-written account of two of the most exciting decades ever lived by Montreal: it is also a literary testimony that brings to life the past behind the city's present and future. Weintraub's book flows just like the Saint-Lawrence - you glance at its troubled-though-delightful waters and wonder what you'd find at the bottom... Well, here's your chance to take that to shore, from the accounts of characters as memorable as Lili St. Cyr to the unravelling of a city torn in half by a street called The Main, whose every corner tells a million stories, with anglos on one side, francos on the other, and everything else in between. By one of Montreal's finest journalists, City Unique is an absolute must in our quest to understanding what lies underneath the city's cosmopolitan and multi-cultural enchantment today, as belle now as it was then.
- This is the best book about Montreal that I have read.
While growing up in Montreal I was of aware of the shady life in Montreal, but I didn't know how extensive it was. We sort of accepted the corruption in Montreal as part of the scenery.
One time in the 1950s the authorities brought a leading gambler to trial. I guess he was selected as a fall guy. When my mother saw the list of his legal team she snorted,"If he is using these lawyers he's guilty!".
Camillien Houde was indeed a colorful character and one of the more effective mayors. A lot of people felt that he got a raw deal when he was interned during WW 2.
One thing that Weintraub didn't mention is that Montreal was a very safe city. It still is safe compared with many other cities that I have visited. Its much safer than either London, New York, or Washington.

5 comments about Hot Springs & Hot Pools of the Northwest: Jayson Loam's Original Guide.
- Photos make this book more valuable than any list of hot springs. Cool Trails recommends this guide for hikers who want to relax in a hot spring at the end of a long hike. Many of the hot springs in the northwest are developed to some degree, and very few of the wild springs are far enough from a road to be considered "hikes." Still, most are located in areas rich in trail hiking opportunities. Covers AK, BC, AB, WA, MT, OR, ID, WY and some other areas of the US.
- We all remember Jayson Loam who created the original guides to the hot springs back in the 70s and 80s. Even then he was so spring chicken, but he kept a hale and happy outlook on life based on his habit of immersing himself in the beautiful waters of America's hot springs (and wells). Now that Jayson has passed on to his happy reward--he died about ten years ago, at a great age--the torch has been passed on to a new generation of hot springs watchers and dippers, and Marjorie Gersh-Young has updated Loam's findings with some new material (lots of it) on her own. It's great and so are the photographs that illustrate every location.
My only dispute is, I don't see why Puerto Rico is in the book, it is a great state (or whatever it is) but it is not in the Northwest by any means! I forget what Jayson Loam had to say about including Puerto Rico among the Northwest region (if any). But in general, Gersh-Young does a splendid job of compiling and sharing the healthful habit of hot springs with a wildly enthusiastic crowd. Did you know that the Native Americans believed that hot springs provide "Big Medicine" direct from the Great Spirit? That's only one of a thousand charming facts you'll learn from this new edition of Loam's magnificent classic reference work. It's a bargain at any price!
- This book good guide for people who like travel to interesting, fanny pleases. Actually you can found same information in the WEB but for that you will lost a lot of time and will not be sour you found all of them or not
- I didn't think this book provided any more information than what can be found on the internet. I would not buy it again if I had the chance.
- As with any travel book - they tend to get dated quickly. This book is great for the commercial hot springs, but watch out on all the ones which require off-road or trail travel - google them first before going.
Several in BC were simply not where they should have been.
GPS coordinates would have been helpfull to include.
